US president has spent the week talking up New Zealand's recent coronavirus resurgence

New Zealand's prime minister has hit back at Donald Trump's focus on the nation's new coronavirus outbreak, saying it's not just about how many cases of Covid-19 your country has – but how you deal with them.

The US president has spent the week talking up New Zealand's recent coronavirus resurgence. The country has recorded 87 new cases since 11 August, after 102 days of having no new infections in the community.

Loved and Lost: grief in the time of coronavirus – a photo essay

Posted: 20 Aug 2020 11:00 PM PDT

Photographer Simon Bray's project Loved and Lost deals with the loss of loved ones. He asked each participant to find a photograph of themselves with their lost loved one, and they returned to the location to replicate the image. The project aims to provide a platform, allowing others to acknowledge their loss, and to celebrate the person they love

Death has a stigma and the burden of grief can hold us captive if we let it. May this be a process through which a loved one can be remembered and through which memories can be relived. Even though the pain of the loss may remain, may this go some way in relieving the hurt and the stigma of death and act as a public declaration that death has lost its sting.

I ask each participant to find a photograph of themselves with their lost loved one. We then return to the location of the original photograph to replicate the image.

Following the Daily Mail's picture exclusive of Boris Johnson's camping arrangements while on holiday in Scotland, one observer noted the prime minister was wearing a special anti-midge hat to keep away the notorious Highland insects that are especially persistent at this time of year.

The good news is that it is pouring with rain this morning, one thing guaranteed to dampen midge activity, so he can perhaps relax listening to the patter of raindrops on canvas and contemplate the latest interview from the new Scottish Tory leader, Douglas Ross, who tells the BBC that the UK government has had "presentational issues" over its pandemic response.

The hospital's decision was announced just an hour before a plane was due to arrive to evacuate Navalny to Berlin's Charité hospital. Navalny is in a coma and on a ventilator in a hospital in the Siberian city of Omsk, after collapsing on a flight on Thursday.

Coronavirus live news: France sees biggest jump in cases since May; Irish minister resigns over lockdown breach

Posted: 21 Aug 2020 02:24 AM PDT

4,771 new cases in France since Thursday; Dara Calleary quits cabinet over attendance at golf club event; Latin America death toll nears 250,000

Poland reported 903 new coronavirus cases on Friday, according to the health ministry's Twitter account, the highest daily increase since the pandemic outbreak. Poland has reported 60,281 cases in all, and 1,938 deaths.

France has marked another large jump in new coronavirus cases, by far the highest increase since the end of the lockdown in May. The latest figures released by Santé Publique France on Thursday evening showed a rise of 4,771 new cases in the previous 24 hours, 1,000 more than the previous day. There are currently 266 clusters under investigation, an increase of 33, and an additional 12 deaths in hospitals; 31 French departments are deemed to be in a situation of "moderate or significant risk".

Health experts say the increase in the number of new cases cannot be explained by the widespread testing being carried out as the rise in new cases is significantly higher than the rise in the number of tests.

Surge in passport sales delivers Vanuatu a record budget surplus

Posted: 20 Aug 2020 03:00 PM PDT

Economy devastated by Covid shutdowns and a destructive cyclone, but citizenships-for-sale are keeping the country afloat

Surging demand for Vanuatu passports has driven an unexpected record surplus, funding Covid-19 bailout packages and cyclone recovery.

With nearly every other sector of its fragile economy reeling from the twin crises of pandemic lockdowns and April's category five Cyclone Harold, Vanuatu nonetheless managed to turn a 3.8bn Vanuatu Vatu (US$33.3m) surplus in the first half of 2020.

Its controversial citizenship-for-sale programmes account for nearly all of that.

Wildfires continue to sear through California, forcing thousands out of their homes and taxing the state's firefighting capacity amid a heatwave and the coronavirus pandemic. One grouping of fires – the LNU Lightning Complex north of the Bay Area – grew rapidly overnight, doubling in size to about 131,000 acres by Thursday, and burning through more than 100 homes and buildings.

The fires have so far destroyed 175 structures, including homes, and are threatening 50,000 more, said Daniel Berlant, an assistant deputy director with the state department of forestry and fire protection. In all, 33 civilians and firefighters have been injured.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt: 'Playing a cop means something different now'

Posted: 20 Aug 2020 10:00 AM PDT

After two years dedicated to childcare, the actor is squarely back in the zeitgeist with three films that explore race, corruption and the roots of today's culture wars

Joseph Gordon-Levitt could be the model of a modern movie star, to the extent the description does not really fit him at all. Acting is just one of the skills in his career portfolio, alongside writing, directing, producing, running an online creative community, hosting a podcast and, occasionally, rocking out – as the guitars, keyboards and drum kit behind him attest (he plays all of them pretty well, and sings). He is in his soundproofed studio in his Los Angeles home. "This is the indulgence of my 18-year-old self," he admits over Zoom. His hair has grown during lockdown and hangs over his face in curly strands, but the boyish, full-faced grin is the same as ever.

Coronavirus struck as Gordon-Levitt was getting back into his stride after a two-year career break. In another sign of his modernity, he took time off to spend with his two young sons, a move practically unheard of among male actors in Hollywood. To be fair, by that stage Gordon-Levitt had already notched up 30 years in show business and he has not yet turned 40. From teen stardom in the hit sitcom 3rd Rock from the Sun, he graduated through choice indie roles and into mainstream fare such as Inception, Lincoln, (500) Days of Summer, Looper, Snowden and The Dark Knight Rises.

Thailand’s turtle hatchlings finally have the beach to themselves

Posted: 20 Aug 2020 10:00 PM PDT

While resorts are deserted, 838 baby turtles have scuttled across a quiet Koh Samui and into the sea since February, making it a record year

When Kosum Kao-Uthai's family noticed mysterious imprints in the sand outside the hotel resort they own in Koh Samui, she knew exactly which animal had paid a visit. She remembered spotting the same marks, left by a nesting sea turtle, when, as a teenager, she helped her father farm coconuts on the island.

Kosum hadn't seen another for five decades. Yet, this year, as the coronavirus pandemic emptied Thailand of tourists, nests belonging to endangered hawksbill and green turtles cropped up across the island. Since February, 838 baby turtles have scuttled their way across the island's sandy beaches and into the sea, with two nests yet to hatch.

Biden completes a comeback for the ages with career-defining speech

    Posted: 20 Aug 2020 10:51 PM PDT

Analysis: The Democratic presidential nominee's remarks resonated with decency, gravity and passion – if not many specifics

Joe Biden stood in a school gym in Iowa fumbling for a message, generating little electricity and looking his age. His rivals were drawing bigger crowds and beat him into fourth place in the caucuses. Political pundits declared him over the hill.

That was February. Now, in August, Biden resembles an ageing heavyweight boxer who got himself in shape, climbed back into the ring, and landed a knockout punch. His closing performance at the Democratic convention on Thursday night produced the finest speech of his career, a comeback for the ages more presidential than the current US president.

Kamala Harris's DNC speech claimed a new moment for progressive Democrats

Harris spoke about structural racism, injustice in healthcare and being a 'proud black woman' – fresh words for the presidential stage

The first note that Kamala Harris sounded in her first speech as the Democrats' official vice-presidential nominee was not about Donald Trump, or Joe Biden, or the crossroads to which the country has arrived.

Instead Harris began her acceptance speech at the party's national convention Wednesday by looking backwards, to the black women activists who fought historically for the right to vote and then for "a seat at the table".

Obama's stark message: America must save itself from Trump | Analysis

    Posted: 19 Aug 2020 11:05 PM PDT

Analysis: The former president issued an unprecedented attack on his successor as he urged voters to rescue their democracy

Just four years ago, amid balloons, confetti, dry ice smoke and giant TV screens, Donald Trump struck an authoritarian tone as he accepted the nomination at the Republican national convention before a frenzied crowd. It prompted warnings of the impending death of democracy, and the end of America's gloriously chequered 244-year journey. But no one really believed it.

However, Barack Obama is now clearly taking the fall of Rome theory seriously. No former US president has criticised his successor at a party convention as he did on Wednesday night, and none has warned that his successor "will tear our democracy down if that's what it takes to win".
