How to stop your glasses steaming up – and 19 other essential facts about face masks Posted: 08 Jul 2020 10:00 PM PDT How often should you wash a cloth mask? And how effective are the disposable ones? The expert guide to choosing, wearing and caring for your face covering The British have been slow to embrace face masks, despite calls from public health experts. Uptake has been just 25% in the UK, compared with 83.4% in Italy and 65.8% in the US. The president of the Royal Society, Venki Ramakrishnan, said this week that wearing one "is the right thing to do" and that a refusal to do so should be seen as socially unacceptable as drink-driving or not wearing a seatbelt. Perhaps one of the problems has been the changing advice as new evidence emerges. The World Health Organization (WHO) now recommends people wear cloth masks. Ramakrishnan said that in the UK, "the message has not been clear enough, so perhaps people do not really understand the benefits or are not convinced". It also doesn't help that the guidance across the UK is different. Continue reading... |
'It's like night and day': Trudeau's and Trump's Covid-19 responses fuel wildly different outcomes Posted: 09 Jul 2020 02:15 AM PDT The US president stokes division as the virus rages, while the prime minister of Canada – where the outbreak appears to be stabilizing – has fostered a shared sense of duty Donald Trump marked the Fourth of July with an apocalyptic speech at Mount Rushmore in which he stoked partisan grievance and deployed racist dog whistles, ignoring calls for unity as coronavirus cases surge. Three days earlier, Justin Trudeau chose a more low-key location to celebrate Canada's own national holiday. The prime minister and his family were photographed harvesting vegetables at an Ottawa food bank farm. Continue reading... |

George Floyd told officers 'I can't breathe' more than 20 times, transcripts show Posted: 08 Jul 2020 07:05 PM PDT Derek Chauvin, the officer kneeling on his neck, replied: 'It takes a heck of a lot of oxygen to talk' Newly released transcripts of the minutes leading up to George Floyd's death reveal he told officers "I can't breathe" more than 20 times, only to have his plea dismissed by Derek Chauvin, the white officer pressing his knee into Floyd's neck, who said: "It takes a heck of a lot of oxygen to talk." The chilling transcripts of body camera video recordings that were made public on Wednesday provide the most detailed account yet of what happened after police apprehended Floyd on 25 May. China accuses Australia of 'gross interference' after offer of safe haven for Hong Kong visa holders Posted: 09 Jul 2020 12:18 AM PDT Prime minister Scott Morrison cancels extradition treaty citing the new national security law as 'a fundamental change of circumstances' China has accused Australia of "gross interference" after Scott Morrison granted a range of visa holders from Hong Kong a five-year extension and suspended an extradition treaty with the city. The prime minister announced on Thursday that Australia would allow a range of visa holders to stay in the country for longer and then offer them a pathway to permanent residency – but has stopped short of creating a special humanitarian intake for Hongkongers fearing persecution under the new national security law. CO2 in Earth's atmosphere nearing levels of 15m years ago Posted: 09 Jul 2020 02:50 AM PDT Last time CO2 was at similar level temperatures were 3C to 4C hotter and sea levels were 20 metres higher The amount of carbon dioxide in the Earth's atmosphere is approaching a level not seen in 15m years and perhaps never previously experienced by a hominoid, according to the authors of a study. At pre-lockdown rates of increase, within five years atmospheric CO2 will pass 427 parts per million, which was the probable peak of the mid-Pliocene warming period 3.3m years ago, when temperatures were 3C to 4C hotter and sea levels were 20 metres higher than today. LGBT asylum seekers' claims routinely rejected in Europe and UK Posted: 08 Jul 2020 09:00 PM PDT Researchers found decision-makers did not consider claimants were at risk of persecution People seeking asylum in the UK and Europe on the grounds of sexual orientation and gender identity are routinely seeing their claims rejected because of a widespread "culture of disbelief" and an "impossible burden of proof", researchers have said. Calling for a major overhaul of the way asylum systems treat LGBT+ claimants, the team from the University of Sussex said that across Europe, one in three were refused because officials simply did not believe their sexual orientation or gender identity. Duterte's anti-terror law a dark new chapter for Philippines, experts warn Posted: 08 Jul 2020 10:48 PM PDT Legal challenges mount against new law, which allows warrantless arrests and could affect delivery of coronavirus aid An anti-terrorism law that grants sweeping powers to president Rodrigo Duterte's government is facing mounting legal challenges, as rights groups warn the legislation signals a new, dark chapter for the Philippines. The act, which lawyers say uses a vague and overly broad definition of terrorism, permits warrantless arrests and allows authorities to hold individuals for weeks without charge. It is to be implemented later this month, though at least six petitions against the law have already been filed in the supreme court. Continue reading... |
Spreading rock dust on fields could remove vast amounts of CO2 from air Posted: 08 Jul 2020 08:31 AM PDT It may be best near-term way to remove CO2, say scientists, but cutting fossil fuel use remains critical Spreading rock dust on farmland could suck billions of tonnes of carbon dioxide from the air every year, according to the first detailed global analysis of the technique. The chemical reactions that degrade the rock particles lock the greenhouse gas into carbonates within months, and some scientists say this approach may be the best near-term way of removing CO2 from the atmosphere. 'Mama Boko Haram': one woman's extraordinary mission to rescue 'her boys' from terrorism Posted: 08 Jul 2020 10:00 PM PDT Aisha Wakil knew many of Boko Haram's fighters as children. Now she uses those ties to broker peace deals, mediate hostage negotiations and convince militants to put down their weapons – but as the violence escalates, her task is becoming impossible. By Chika Oduah It was another scorching afternoon in Maiduguri. In the west of the city, in Nigeria's north-east, 51-year-old Aisha Wakil sat in her office talking to a jihadi fighter named Usman. Wakil was draped head-to-toe in fine sequinned chiffon; a niqab covered most of her face, leaving visible only her dark eyes. Ka'aji, a sweet, woody incense that Wakil kept burning in a corner, perfumed the room. Wakil and Usman kept their voices down. They were hashing out a secret plan to free a 16-year-old girl who was being held hostage by Boko Haram. It was May 2019, 10 years after the Islamist group had begun terrorising Nigeria as part of a jihad it was waging against the government. The violence, which had spilled into neighbouring countries, had left more than 30,000 people dead. Continue reading... |
I prosecuted Srebrenica war criminals, but I know others are still walking free | Serge Brammertz Posted: 09 Jul 2020 12:00 AM PDT Until we bring all the genocide's perpetrators to justice, we are again failing the boys and men massacred in Bosnia in July 1995
This Saturday, like every 11 July on the anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide, the remains of newly identified victims will be buried alongside the thousands already interred at the cemetery and memorial site in the Bosnian town. The bodies of Almir Halilović, Sakib Kiverić, Emin Mustafić and Fuad Ðozić, who died in the 1995 slaughter, will not, however, be among them. Twenty-five years ago, senior Bosnian Serb leaders committed genocide against Srebrenica's Bosnian Muslims. The town had been designated a UN safe area. But Bosnian Serb forces besieged and captured it and systematically executed more than 7,000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys, burying them in mass graves. They terrorised 35,000 more Bosnian Muslims – women, children and the elderly – before expelling them from the area. Continue reading... |
Hunger could kill millions more than Covid-19, warns Oxfam Posted: 09 Jul 2020 02:43 AM PDT Starvation looms from Afghanistan to Haiti as coronavirus restrictions wipe out incomes and cut food supplies Millions of people are being pushed towards hunger by the coronavirus pandemic, which could end up killing more people through lack of food than from the illness itself, Oxfam has warned. Closed borders, curfews and travel restrictions have disrupted food supplies and incomes in already fragile countries, forcing an extra million people closer to famine in Afghanistan and heightening the humanitarian disaster in Yemen, where two-thirds already live in hunger. 'The virus can kill anyone': families condemn Bolsonaro's claim young people face little risk Posted: 09 Jul 2020 02:00 AM PDT Far-right leader is adamant the young can rest easy but 3,500 Brazilians under the age of 40 have already died from Covid-19 Young people should not fret about coronavirus, Brazil's president Jair Bolsonaro declared on Tuesday as he announced he had contracted the illness. But Hugo Dutra was youthful and fit: a dance-addicted millennial with no underlying medical conditions. He died in Rio on 18 April, after eight days on a ventilator. Continue reading... |
China has shown it is willing to pay the economic price of suppressing Hong Kong | James Lim Posted: 09 Jul 2020 02:00 AM PDT Now that it has its own financial hubs on the mainland, Beijing may be prepared to risk the fate of its golden goose Last week, the Chinese government passed a broad national security law criminalising dissent in Hong Kong. While the law has already had a chilling effect on protests, the consequences for Hong Kong's economy are unclear. Since 1 July, Hong Kong's stock market has climbed. Some foreign businessmen in Hong Kong have dismissed the law's potential effect on business. This incredulity is unsurprising: for decades Hong Kong has thrived as a gateway for international capital into and out of China. Surely Beijing wouldn't kill its own "golden goose"? But investors and businessmen, used to the unencumbered movement of capital, may have lost sight of recent changes. Contemporary China is different today to just 10 years ago, let alone to the 1990s when Hong Kong was handed over by the British. Now a global power that commands one-sixth of the world's GDP and is increasingly authoritarian, it is approaching Hong Kong with a new rationale that is both political and economic. Australia's world-first anti-encryption law should be overhauled, independent monitor says Posted: 09 Jul 2020 02:50 AM PDT Attorney general should be stripped of the power to force tech companies to help security agencies potentially spy on the public The attorney general should be stripped of the power to approve orders that would force tech and social media companies to help security services to potentially spy on the public, the Independent National Security Legislation Monitor has said. In a report into the encryption legislation, the outgoing INSLM, James Renwick, called for that power and the ability for agency heads to compel assistance from tech companies to be moved to the Administrative Appeals Tribunal, and a new investigatory powers commissioner within it. 'We are on our own': Bangladesh's pregnant garment workers face the sack Posted: 08 Jul 2020 11:15 PM PDT Employers are avoiding paying maternity benefits and purging union members as orders plummet during Covid-19, say activists A few weeks ago, Kalpona Akter's phone started vibrating. She watched with mounting dread as message after message poured in. First there was the garment worker who had been sacked for demanding personal protective equipment for his colleagues. Then pregnant women and union members started calling for help, saying they were also losing their jobs. As Bangladesh's garment sector reels from the economic impact of Covid-19 and the shock of £2.4bn of cancelled or suspended orders inflicted on the industry by overseas fashion brands, a wave of job losses has swept across the country. Moreover, during lockdown hundreds of thousands of workers were not paid for work they had already done. Continue reading... |

I'm glad to be back in church – even if there's hand sanitiser instead of holy water Posted: 08 Jul 2020 10:09 AM PDT I wonder what happened in my local church, behind locked doors, for all these months Football, pubs and churches are all now available to us again. While I love all three, they also, respectively, cause me stress, temptation and guilt. I did not go to mass at the weekend because, as with pubs, I thought it might be a bit of a melee. I imagined feisty parishioners clamouring at the door being spoken to severely by sunglassed, earpieced bouncers. No, I left it until Tuesday to allow calm to prevail. My church's website advised me places were limited to 48. Pre-booking online was advised but the IT for that was still in development, so I decided to take my chances for the 11.30 kick-off. |
Coronavirus near me: are UK Covid-19 cases rising or falling in your area Posted: 08 Jul 2020 03:48 AM PDT Latest cases updates: how has Covid-19 progressed where you live? Check the week-on-week changes across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland The map shows local authorities where the number of cases has increased week-on-week and where it has fallen. Some of this is due to natural fluctuations, especially in areas where there are very few cases, and so a rise from 1 to 2 is a doubling. Increased testing also means that more cases may be being detected than previously, although the impact of this between one week and the next is likely to be slight. Continue reading... |
Sir David Attenborough makes appeal to save charity behind London and Whipsnade zoos – video Posted: 09 Jul 2020 01:35 AM PDT The naturalist has appealed for donations to save conservation charity ZSL, which has been severely affected by the coronavirus pandemic. The charity's director, Dominic Jermey, said the zoos would be unable to recoup the money lost even though they had been allowed to reopen, because of social-distancing measures and heavily restricted visitor numbers. He said: 'Unlike any other UK zoo, our zoos are the lifeline for groundbreaking research at the world-renowned ZSL Institute of Zoology and fund our global conservation projects – work that has never been more vital.' |

Vauhxx Booker, who is a member of the Monroe county human rights commission, said the men pinned him against a tree, shouted racial slurs and one of them threatened to 'get a noose' at Monroe Lake near Bloomington over the Fourth of July weekend. 'We are the most homophobic country in the EU': Poland’s election and the LGBT fightback – video Posted: 08 Jul 2020 04:28 AM PDT Andrzej Duda, running for re-election as president of Poland, has included strong verbal attacks on the country's LGBT community in his campaign. Recently, he has referred disparagingly to 'LGBT ideology' in an attempt to appeal to his conservative base, calling it more destructive than communism, while some towns have proclaimed themselves 'LGBT-free zones'. In the last week of the election campaign, can the LGBT community stop Duda from winning another five years in power? Continue reading... |
