What happens when flu meets Covid-19? Posted: 19 Jul 2020 01:00 AM PDT How seasonal viruses interact with the coronavirus is unknown – it may lessen or sharpen the pandemic – so flu vaccinations are vital Optimists had hoped Covid-19 might not withstand the blistering heat of a British summer. However those hopes have faded: the virus staged a recent resurgence in Iran amid actual blistering temperatures, and has had no trouble persisting in sultry Singapore. But what happens to Covid-19, and us, when the rain and chill – and flu and sniffles – of autumn set in? Especially, how will the annual winter flu epidemic play out amid a Covid-19 pandemic? All quiet in Ibiza as super-rich hide away and young Brits chill by the pool Posted: 19 Jul 2020 01:20 AM PDT With its near-deserted streets and laid-back vibe, the Spanish island is a world away from its pre-pandemic party scene On the first day of lockdown in Britain, 48 private planes flew into Ibiza. While the island has only officially been open to tourists since the beginning of July, following one of Europe's strictest quarantines, the super-rich have been making the most of a Balearic summer that hasn't been this quiet for decades. Actor Emma Watson has been spotted in town and musician James Blunt has been living permanently in his villa in Santa Gertrudis, dubbed the island's Notting Hill. Exclusive boutique hotels, luxury villas and the island's most expensive restaurants have reported an unexpected boom in business. Many are already full for July and much of August and say that wealthy customers are staying longer and spending more than the same period last year. Continue reading... |

Coronavirus: Boris Johnson insists he can avoid second England-wide lockdown Posted: 19 Jul 2020 02:09 AM PDT PM says reimposition of national measures is 'nuclear deterrent' he hopes never to use Boris Johnson has insisted he can avoid imposing another England-wide lockdown this winter, describing it as a "nuclear deterrent" that he hopes never to use. Despite chief scientific adviser Patrick Vallance saying "national measures" might be necessary if there were fresh waves of the virus in the coming months, the prime minister said he "certainly" did not want to have to order the public to "stay at home" again. Pressure from Trump led to 5G ban, Britain tells Huawei Posted: 18 Jul 2020 12:34 PM PDT 'Geopolitical' factors were behind the move, the company was told, with hints that the decision could be reversed in future The British government privately told the Chinese technology giant Huawei that it was being banned from Britain's 5G telecoms network partly for "geopolitical" reasons following huge pressure from President Donald Trump, the Observer has learned. In the days leading up to the controversial announcement on Tuesday last week, intensive discussions were held and confidential communications exchanged between the government and Whitehall officials on one side and Huawei executives on the other. Russia's ambassador to UK denies coronavirus vaccine-hacking claims Posted: 18 Jul 2020 07:35 PM PDT Accusations that Russian intelligence was involved in cyber attacks on coronavirus labs make 'no sense', says envoy Russia's ambassador to London has denied accusations by Britain and its allies of helping hackers target labs conducting coronavirus vaccine research, in a UK television interview to be broadcast on Sunday. Andrei Kelin said Thursday's allegations by Britain, the US and Canada that a hacking group called APT29 was behind the online attacks, and was "almost certainly" linked to Russian intelligence, made "no sense". The Director-General of the Rwanda Biomedical Centre (RBC), Dr Sabin Nsanzimana, tells Rwanda's New Times newspaper that he believed spread could be controlled in the central african state.

Sun, sea, safety: Greece woos Europe's pensioners with 7% income tax rate Posted: 19 Jul 2020 01:30 AM PDT Athens offers generous tax incentives to lure retirees – and boost its own struggling economy Most countries want to attract the young and the willing – entrepreneurs with ideas, students looking to learn, people prepared to do the jobs locals turn down. Greece, though, has decided on a different approach, by making a play for Europe's retirees. "The logic is very simple: we want pensioners to relocate here," says Athina Kalyva, head of tax policy at the Greek finance ministry, who has helped design a scheme to get people to do just that. "We have a beautiful country, a very good climate, so why not?" Continue reading... |
A year to go, but does Tokyo still want to host the Olympics after Covid? Posted: 19 Jul 2020 12:29 AM PDT Public enthusiasm for next year's Games is waning, as city believes Covid-19 infections will 'flare up' if it pushes ahead This Wednesday the reset Olympic countdown clock will show there are 365 days to go until the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Games. But with a year left to finalise arrangements, the prospects for a traditional Olympic spectacle in the city are looking grim. Even if Japan, which has seen a comparatively low number of infections and deaths, could contain the outbreak, the virus is expected to rampage through the US, Brazil, India and other parts of the world. Alfre Woodard: 'We want all those with a stake in the death row business to see this film' Posted: 19 Jul 2020 02:00 AM PDT The star of the award-winning film Clemency talks about the US prison system, her enslaved great-grandfather and her hopes for Black Lives Matter The focus of Black Lives Matter protests has inevitably fallen on the most visible injustice - instances of police brutality. More systemic racial disparities in the American penal system are too often hidden from plain sight. The US incarcerates more of its citizens – 2.2 million people – than any other country on Earth. African American adults are nearly six times more likely to receive a prison sentence than white adults. Nearly half of the 206,000 people serving life sentences in 2018 were black, though black people represent only 13.4% of the population; almost equal numbers of white and black prisoners are currently on death row – just over 1,000 of each ethnicity – but as the prosecution of capital punishment has declined, so the racial imbalance has increased. If ever a film could bring home the buried trauma of those latter statistics it is Clemency. The film, which won a grand jury prize at Sundance last year, has been instrumental in catalysing again urgent debates around mass incarceration, capital punishment and race. Continue reading... |
Britain can no longer shirk its responsibility for Shamima Begum | Kenan Malik Posted: 18 Jul 2020 10:30 PM PDT A civilised country acknowledges its own citizens, whatever they might have done Should "jihadi bride" Shamima Begum be allowed to return to the UK to fight her case not to be stripped of British citizenship? She should. Not because she is a victim of child grooming. Nor because the conditions under which she lives in a Kurdish camp for Isis women are harsh. But because she is a British citizen. The court of appeal ruled last week that Begum should be able to return to Britain to fight her case against being stripped of citizenship. It dismissed the government's argument, which, in effect, was that Begum had left Britain of her own volition and was therefore not entitled to a fair trial. Continue reading... |
Mali protesters turn to populist imam Mahmoud Dicko to end cycle of corruption Posted: 18 Jul 2020 07:30 AM PDT Mahmoud Dicko has emerged as a key player in a country in crisis. But is he a zealot or a pragmatist? A fragile calm has returned to Bamako. The debris has been cleared from the streets and the barricades around the Salam mosque in the neighbourhood of Badalabougou are gone. For the moment, a bloody confrontation between security forces and demonstrators in the capital of Mali appears to have been averted. But the pause is likely to be temporary. Leaders of the landlocked west African nation's protest movement have promised to go "right to the bitter end" to force through dramatic political change, after six weeks of rising unrest. "We will wage this battle until we bring in a new democratic era in Mali. We have lost too many killed to retreat now," Mohamed Salia Touré, a prominent protest leader and young politician, told the Observer. Continue reading... |
Trump's 2020 strategy: paint Joe Biden as a puppet for the 'radical left' Posted: 19 Jul 2020 12:00 AM PDT As Biden builds an impressive coalition of supporters, the Trump campaign hopes to link the candidate to high taxes and socialism Donald Trump's new campaign manager began his tenure this week with a declaration of intent. "If we win more days than Joe Biden wins, President Trump will be re-elected," Bill Stepien said in his first public statement. "We will expose Joe Biden as a hapless tool of the extreme left and contrast his failures with the undeniable successes of President Trump." Continue reading... |
Bullying Xi, predatory Trump: where does Britain turn in a divided world? Posted: 18 Jul 2020 10:18 PM PDT As the UK struggles to carve out a post-Brexit role, the Huawei affair has left it exposed, caught between two superpowers who have no respect for an isolated, vulnerable island Life after divorce can be difficult. Having cut ties with the EU, its partner of 47 years, Britain's new-minted relationship with China is in deep water. Tapping into Beijing's enormous economic power is vital to Brexit's success. But the relationship has soured. The spark has gone. The relatives don't approve. Harsh words are flying. Boris Johnson is accused of two-timing China by succumbing to American pressure to break it off and backing Donald Trump's electorally driven "new cold war". Johnson would surely rather have it both ways. But he knows a show of defiance could wreck his other Brexit passion: a spanking new trade deal with the US. Continue reading... |

Angela Merkel set for central role in talks on EU recovery plan Posted: 15 Jul 2020 09:00 PM PDT Germany has foot in both camps as leaders try to agree on rescue package and seven-year budget When Angela Merkel attended her first EU summit as Germany's chancellor, in 2005, she joined Tony Blair, Jacques Chirac and leaders from central and eastern Europe that had joined the bloc only 17 months earlier. Nearly 15 years later, Merkel is the EU's longest-serving leader and seen as the key to unlocking a deal to help Europe face the worst economic slump forecast in its history. A year ago Merkel was seen as tired and drifting, having announced her intention to stand down as chancellor in 2021 after disastrous election results. Now credited for her calm leadership during the coronavirus pandemic, with personal approval ratings close to 80%, she is once again seen as the indispensable broker as EU leaders seek a recovery plan. John Lewis remembers 'Bloody Sunday' in Selma – video report Posted: 18 Jul 2020 05:32 AM PDT John Lewis, the civil rights hero and Democratic congressman, has died at the age of 80. In 1965 he headed a march across the Edmund Pettus bridge in Selma, Alabama, and was knocked to the ground and beaten by police. The incident, along with other beatings during peaceful protests, brought attention to racial oppression in the US south. 20 years later he recalled the events for the documentary series Eyes on the Prize for Washington University in St Louis

Civil rights activist and politician John Lewis – a life in pictures Posted: 18 Jul 2020 03:57 AM PDT The civil rights leader John Lewis, known at the 'conscience of America', has died. Born the son of sharecroppers in Alabama on 21 February 1940, he attended segregated public schools and, inspired by the words of Martin Luther King Jr, became active in the civil rights movement. From university onwards he organised sit-ins at segregated lunch counters, took part in the Freedom Rides, was chair of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee and was a key speaker at the historic March on Washington in 1963. He led one of the pivotal moments in the civil rights movement, a march over the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama that was brutally attacked by state troopers. Continue reading... |
