China shares suffer biggest fall since February despite avoiding recession - business live Posted: 16 Jul 2020 01:57 AM PDT Rolling coverage of the latest economic and financial news
The markets continue to demonstrate a one step forward, one step back behavioural pattern, says Russ Mould, investment director at AJ Bell. "Weighing on global markets was new data from China which showed its economy returned to growth in the second quarter of 2020, but domestic consumption and investment remained weak. "On the UK market, technology, miners and consumer stocks were the main culprits for the index retreating. Energy, telecoms and utilities were the only sectors making any progress.
European stock markets are being dragged down today too. The main indices are all in the red, with Britain's FTSE 100 losing 0.8% or 50 points at 6243. "Progress on vaccines and drug treatments is one of the reasons we retain a positive outlook on equities, as it helps underpin the case for controlling the virus without a return to full lockdowns. However, we continue to see geopolitical risks generating volatility, including the US election and US-China tensions." Continue reading... |

The legislation makes major strides in pushing back against discrimination faced by women and minorities during the 30-year rule of Omar al-Bashir that came to an end in 2019, according to equality advocates. Bild, Merkel and the culture wars: the inside story of Germany’s biggest tabloid Posted: 15 Jul 2020 10:00 PM PDT The newspaper Bild has long poured vitriol on the country's left-wingers and 'do gooders'. But now it has a new target: the chancellor. By Thomas Meaney 'It would be ideal if you could hit a deer," Julian Reichelt, editor-in-chief of Europe's largest tabloid, Bild Zeitung, told his chauffeur. "Guardian readers could do with a bit more colour." We had reached escape velocity out of ice-encrusted Düsseldorf. The Mercedes S-Class locked into place like a bobsled on the Autobahn. I sat shotgun with Reichelt's assortment of sports gear, a hockey stick between my legs. "We are lucky in our driver today," Reichelt said, deadpan. "Last time we hit a wild boar and the boar and the car went flying." I was travelling with Reichelt on one of his publicity tours across Germany. For the past two years, he has made an appointment once a month to commune with groups of Bild's 1.3 million readers. "You have to feel their emotions," he told me from the backseat. "You have to listen to their hearts." Continue reading... |

That is where I will leave you tonight. Thanks as always for reading. Here's what we learned today:
Victoria Police assistant commissioner Luke Cornelius has just held a press conference about that unfolding story in Gladstone Park. Police shot a man dead after arriving at a scene in which it's alleged a woman was being attacked. She is now in a critical condition. Cornelius said after receiving several calls, police arrived at the park shortly after 3:30pm, and found a man thought to be in his 30s "seriously assaulting an older female". They found themselves having to make one of the worst possible decisions that any member has to make in their career, so my heart goes out to them. We're going to wrap our arms around those members and assure them of our support, assure them of our backing ... They've done the best to stop a terrible attack from continuing, and tragically, despite their best efforts, it has resulted in the death of a male, who we believe was the assailant, and also very very serious injuries to the female, who was the subject of that frenzied attack. Even a four-year delay in programmes that promote gender equality, such as advancing women's digital and financial inclusion, would wipe a potential $5tn (£4tn) from global GDP by 2030. Coronavirus near me: are UK Covid-19 cases rising or falling in your area? Posted: 16 Jul 2020 01:17 AM PDT Latest updates: how has Covid-19 progressed where you live? Check the week-on-week changes across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland The map shows local authorities where the number of cases has increased week-on-week and where it has fallen. Some of this is due to natural fluctuations, especially in areas where there are very few cases, and so a rise from 1 to 2 is a doubling. Increased testing also means that more cases may be being detected than previously, although the impact of this between one week and the next is likely to be slight. Continue reading... |
Angela Merkel set for central role in talks on EU recovery plan Posted: 15 Jul 2020 09:00 PM PDT Germany has foot in both camps as leaders try to agree on rescue package and seven-year budget When Angela Merkel attended her first EU summit as Germany's chancellor, in 2005, she joined Tony Blair, Jacques Chirac and leaders from central and eastern Europe that had joined the bloc only 17 months earlier. Nearly 15 years later, Merkel is the EU's longest-serving leader and seen as the key to unlocking a deal to help Europe face the worst economic slump forecast in its history.
