US buys up world stock of key Covid-19 drug remdesivir

Posted: 30 Jun 2020 11:32 AM PDT

No other country will be able to buy remdesivir, which can help recovery from Covid-19, for next three months at least

The US has bought up virtually all the stocks for the next three months of one of the two drugs proven to work against Covid-19, leaving none for the UK, Europe or most of the rest of the world.

Experts and campaigners are alarmed both by the US unilateral action on remdesivir and the wider implications, for instance in the event of a vaccine becoming available. The Trump administration has already shown that it is prepared to outbid and outmanoeuvre all other countries to secure the medical supplies it needs for the US.

Posted: 01 Jul 2020 12:07 AM PDT

Nation living with 'reduced visibility' of what will happen in the coming months and a growing sense of isolation

When Jacinda Ardern urged New Zealanders to stand firm behind her government's decision to keep the country's borders tightly closed against Covid-19, the prime minister described a reality that many around the world could only imagine with envy. "We get to enjoy weekend sport, go to restaurants and bars, our workplaces are open, and we can gather in whatever numbers we like," she said.

New Zealanders returned in June to normal life with strict border controls the only remnant of a pandemic that months ago had threatened to sweep the country as it had in most others before a strict lockdown quashed its spread.

The French education minister, Jean-Louis Blanquer, has said he expects all the country's schools to return to normal at the start of the new academic year in September. Blanquer said the situation with Covid-19 in France, where the virus has been deemed under control, meant the return to classes after two month summer holidays, known in France as "la rentrée", would "be a normal return".

"Today, our main outlook is quite optimistic. We think that the health conditions will allow us to have a normal return to classes," the minister told French radio, RTL. "Everyone should be there ... except if there is a worsening of the situation. Of course, we will prepare for any further crisis."

US urges allies to maintain UN embargo on arms sales to Iran

Mike Pompeo opposes lifting embargo, which is due to end in October, citing risk to stability

A US attempt to destroy the Iran nuclear deal, reimpose sanctions and extend a UN embargo on arms sales to Iran risks a "generational setback for the cause of multilateralism and international law", Iran's foreign minister has told the UN security council.

Russia's ambassador to the UN also said the latest US moves to isolate Tehran was like "putting its knee to the neck of the Iranian people". Vassily Nebenzia described the policy as "a maximum suffocation policy" and said the US's goal was to make Iran the scapegoat for an uncontrollable escalation in the Middle East.

Petrol sold to Nigeria from Europe 'dirtier' than black market 'bush' fuel

Samples from illegal refineries in Niger delta found to be of a higher quality than imported petrol in new analysis

Black market fuel made from stolen oil in rudimentary "bush" refineries hidden deep in the creeks and swamps of the Niger delta is less polluting than the highly toxic diesel and petrol that Europe exports to Nigeria, new laboratory analysis has found.

Shell, Exxon, Chevron and other major oil companies extract and export up to 2m barrels a day of high quality, low sulphur "Bonny Light" crude from the Niger delta. But very little of this oil is refined in the country because its four state-owned refineries are dysfunctional or have closed.

"He's a wonderful musician and a great academic," Brosnan says. "He just graduated from USC film school." The graduation, like so many others, was cancelled. "We got him a cap and gown and sat here watching it [the online ceremony] on the sofa".

Hong Kong's security laws usher in new era of Chinese control

Beijing's new rules appear tailored to cover the actions of protesters and their supporters

Beijing has imposed a raft of national security rules on Hong Kong, ushering in a new chapter of Chinese control over the semi-autonomous territory once known as a haven of political freedom and civil liberty.

Chinese and Hong Kong officials have said the law would target only a "narrow set" of behaviours, but the full text of the legislation – released only after it was enacted late on Tuesday – shows it covers a broad range of activities under vaguely defined crimes related to security. The harshest penalties are life in prison.

Coronavirus Australia updates: Victoria reports 73 new Covid-19 cases as NSW refuses to accept diverted flights – live news

Posted: 01 Jul 2020 02:58 AM PDT

Residents of 10 postcodes in Melbourne's north and west have been ordered to stay home from midnight tonight. Follow live

The last question is on masks. Asked if Victoria will recommend the wearing of masks in public, Andrews says: "It may well be we get to that point."

But we're not there yet. The public health advice around the mandatory use of masks remains unchanged.

Things do change. This is a very fluid and dynamic set of circumstances. It may get to the point where we have to close down additional suburbs. It may get to the point where we have to look at a range of other measures. Masks could be part of that but that's not the advice I've received to this point.

Sales asks if Victoria felt pressured by the federal government to open up earlier than it was ready.

Andrews:

No. I wouldn't say that at all.

I think people are rightly alarmed and concerned ... What people want and have received from our government and public health team right throughout these recent months is a clear plan and the absolute determination to get the job done.

We've got to bring these cases under control. We have to firstly stabilise. We have seen the last three or four days numbers that are higher than we'd like but they're not doubling every second day. There is some stability and there's an enormous amount of testing going on in those hotspot suburbs. We have to bring stability and drive the numbers down. That's what I'm determined to do.

New charges brought to circumvent Covid-19 prison release scheme, say human rights groups

Female human rights activists imprisoned in Iran are facing a slew of new charges to prevent them from being temporarily released because of the Covid-19 epidemic, rights groups say.

Since Covid-19 spread rapidly through the country in early March, Iranian authorities have been under pressure to release all prisoners who pose no risk to society. Around 85,000 prisoners were temporarily released under a furlough scheme earlier this year in response to the coronavirus outbreak, half of whom were believed to be political detainees.

Coronavirus UK: are Covid-19 cases rising or falling near you?

Latest updates: how has Covid-19 progressed where you live? Check the week-on-week changes across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland

The map shows local authorities where the number of cases has increased week-on-week and where it has fallen. Some of this is due to natural fluctuations, especially in areas where there are very few cases, and so a rise from 1 to 2 is a doubling. Increased testing also means that more cases may be being detected than previously, although the impact of this between one week and the next is likely to be slight.

Trump views US troops as disposable – the Russian bounty scandal makes that clear | Simon Tisdall

Posted: 30 Jun 2020 02:36 PM PDT

Time and again, the president has failed to protect military personnel. For Trump, he always comes first, no matter who dies

Donald Trump likes to suggest he has got the back of US soldiers battling America's foes around the world. It was a big theme of his 2016 campaign and his West Point speech earlier this month. So great was his boundless care for America's fighting men and women, he said, that he would halt the endless, costly foreign wars prosecuted by his predecessors – and bring them home.

'New deal' risks fuelling emissions and eroding building standards

Green campaigners and housing experts warn Boris Johnson's recovery plan could swiftly become a liability

Boris Johnson's plan to build tens of thousands of new homes risks locking in high carbon emissions for decades to come, if they are built to today's poor efficiency standards instead of being designed for net zero carbon.

The prime minister's plans to "build, build, build" form the centrepiece of his "new deal" to lift Britain's economy out of the coronavirus recession. About £12bn will go to building 180,000 new homes to relieve the housing crisis, while new hospitals and schools will be constructed to improve degraded public services.

What we can do now about Stone Mountain's 150ft Confederate carving | Ryan Gravel and Scott Morris

Posted: 30 Jun 2020 03:36 AM PDT

The largest celebration of the Confederacy should be obscured by vegetation and the park outside Atlanta repurposed away from white supremacy

The current national attention to the interrelated issues of policy reform and representation, along with the murder of two Black men here in Georgia, got me thinking again about the state's giant monument to white supremacy on the side of Stone Mountain.

It is too big to just tear down, like they are doing with statues in Richmond and elsewhere, but something is going to happen with it eventually. Anti-racist sentiment is growing, and the makeup of Georgia's population is changing so fast that some kind of modification is inevitable. And while I believe decisions about what ultimately happens there should emerge from meaningful public engagement, I don't believe we have to wait any longer to make change. Below are some ideas we can start to implement now.
