Poland has ordered the temporary closure of 12 coal mines after a major outbreak of coronavirus among miners in the country's southern coal-mining regions. According to Polish media, coal miners now account for up to 20% of all coronavirus cases in Poland.

On Saturday the health ministry announced 576 new cases of coronavirus, the highest daily total since the pandemic began. Of these, around 60% were workers at a single mine in the coal region of Silesia. It is believed that an increase in testing is partly responsible for the sudden surge in cases.

The Ryanair boss, Michael O'Leary, has delivered his withering verdict on Britain's quarantine rules, which came into force today: "British people are ignoring this quarantine. They know it's rubbish."

Government accused of totalitarianism and censorship after Bolsonaro orders end to publication of numbers

The Brazilian government has been accused of totalitarianism and censorship after it stopped releasing its total numbers of Covid-19 cases and deaths and wiped an official site clean of swaths of data.

Health ministry insiders told local media the move was ordered by far-right president, Jair Bolsonaro, himself – and was met with widespread outrage in Brazil, one of the world's worst-hit Covid-19 hotspots, with more deaths than Italy and more cases than Russia and the UK.

How lives were destroyed under cover of lockdown in a small Indian town

Posted: 07 Jun 2020 09:00 PM PDT

In Telinipara, West Bengal, Hindu attackers burned Muslim homes and shops and vandalised mosques

Under the cover of lockdown, they came. Armed with petrol bombs, acid bombs, gas cylinders, molotov cocktails and explosives, the men, numbering around 100, piled stealthily into small boats to cross over the Ganges river. Reaching their target, the banks of the small town of Telinipara, they climbed ashore. And then, they pounced.

The violent onslaught that began at midday of 12 May was the pinnacle of the worst outbreak of religious violence in India since the riots that ripped through north-east Delhi in February, killing over 50 people. Over three days in this small town in West Bengal, which, like the rest of India was under a strict nationwide coronavirus lockdown that confined everyone to their homes, Hindu attackers burned and decimated Muslim homes and shops and vandalised two mosques and a Muslim shrine. According to multiple accounts given to the Guardian, the perpetrators also exposed themselves to Muslim women and made rape and death threats as they carried out the brutality. In retaliation, local Muslims then began setting fire to Hindu homes. Of the 55 buildings eventually destroyed, around 45 belonged to Muslims.

UK diplomats fear end of special relationship if Trump re-elected

Posted: 07 Jun 2020 09:00 PM PDT

Former senior officials also worry Britain may be sidelined if Joe Biden becomes president

The UK's special relationship with the US may end if Donald Trump wins a second term, some of the UK's most senior retired diplomats and Conservative foreign policy specialists have said. They also say that if the Democrat Joe Biden wins, Washington may view the EU rather than the UK as its primary partner.

The anxious assessment of what is at stake for Britain in the US presidential election in November has been made on and off the record in a variety of seminars over the past month, and underlines concerns at Trump's performance during the coronavirus pandemic. It also reflects diplomatic outreach to the UK by Biden's chief foreign policy adviser, Antony Blinken.

Ex-secretary of state and military leader during Bush presidencies becomes first major Republican to back Trump's Democratic rival

Colin Powell endorsed Democratic former US vice-president Joe Biden on Sunday and said Donald Trump's behaviour endangers democracy, becoming the first major Republican to publicly back Trump's rival ahead of November's election.

Powell, who led the US military during the 1991 Gulf War in Iraq under Republican former President George HW Bush and later led the Department of State under President George W Bush, said Trump has "drifted away" from the US Constitution and "lies about things".

The findings of an investigation into one of the world's most infamous cold cases, the 1986 assassination of Swedish prime minister Olof Palme, will finally be made public in Stockholm on Wednesday.

Palme was shot in the back at close range on a Stockholm street while walking home from the cinema with his wife Lisbeth on a February evening. The gunman disappeared into a side street and the mystery has thwarted the Swedish police ever since, giving rise to an industry built around competing speculative theories.

UK shares, sterling rise on further lockdown easing hopes – business live

Chris Beauchamp, chief market analyst at online trading platform IG, says:

The surge in travel- and airline-related names comes on the day when the UK implements a quarantine for overseas travel, perhaps the very definition of shutting stable doors after the horse has bolted.

With lockdowns easing across Europe and no sign of a second infection wave, this move has been staunchly opposed by airlines, and it looks like the market expects the restriction to remain in place for only a limited time.

The government is reportedly ready to let beer gardens open from 22 June as part of plans drawn up by a group of ministers, dubbed the "Save Summer Six", who are looking at ways to restart the hospitality industry earlier than initially planned, writes my colleague Rob Davies.

The proposals, first reported in the Financial Times, would allow some of the 27,000 UK pubs that have outdoor space to serve customers for the first time in three months.

‘Rolling emergency’ of locust swarms decimating Africa, Asia and Middle East

Unseasonal rains have allowed desert pests to breed rapidly and spread across vast distances leaving devastation in their wake

Locust swarms threaten a "rolling emergency" that could endanger harvests and food security across parts of Africa and Asia for the rest of the year, experts warn.

An initial infestation of locusts in December was expected to die out during the current dry season. But unseasonal rains have allowed several generations of locust to breed, resulting in new swarms forming.

What lies beneath: our love affair with living underwater

How the 1960s craze for oceanic exploration changed our relationship with the planet

In November 1966, the Gemini 12 spacecraft, carrying two astronauts, splashed down in the Pacific. The four-day mission was a triumph, proving that humans could work in outer space, and even step into the great unknown, albeit tethered to their spacecraft. It catapulted the US ahead of the USSR in the space race.

From then, Nasa's goal was to beat the Russians to the moon. That meant weeks rather than days in space, in an isolated, claustrophobic environment. There was one perfect way to prepare humans for these conditions: going underwater. The world was gripped. If we could land people on the moon, why not colonise the ocean as well?

South Africa may hold the answer to who murdered Olof Palme

The trail for the killer of the Swedish prime minister had gone cold until a diplomat picked up the 1986 case as a hobby

Dag Hammarskjöld brought me to Olof Palme. Two Swedish leaders, both supporting small nations on the world scene, both of whom refused to be controlled by global superpowers; both died a violent death. Were they also victims of the same forces?

For 11 years I investigated the mysterious aeroplane crash that killed the former UN secretary-general Dag Hammarskjöld, a a project that became the subject of the documentary Cold Case Hammarskjöld.

Sandinista leaders fall victim to coronavirus outbreak they downplayed

Nicaragua's government denies community spread in the country but an independent tally says deaths are 20 times the official figure

Earlier this year, as countries enforced strict social-distancing rules to slow the spread of coronavirus, Nicaragua's Sandinista rulers organized a string of pro-government rallies and marches under the banner "Love Walk in the Time of Covid-19".

Among those who joined one of those crowds in Managua was Dr Félix Bravo, a doctor in the country's public health system, whose loyalty to the Nicaraguan government apparently outweighed the World Health Organization's warnings against large gatherings.
