WHO sounds alarm over surge of Covid-19 cases in Latin America; unrest grows in UK PM's party over Dominic Cummings lockdown breach

Here is some news from the UK, but that will no doubt resonate with families all around the world in which parents are remote working from lockdown.

Working mothers have been able to do only one hour of uninterrupted paid work for every three hours done by men during lockdown, according to a study that exposes the work imbalance between men and women, writes Guardian senior news reporter Alexandra Topping.

The Netherlands has recorded 15 more deaths from Covid-19 since yesterday, and 190 new cases of coronavirus, according to its public health institute.

The latest update from the Dutch institute for public health and the environment (RIVM) showed the cumulative number of cases of coronavirus in the country had now reached 45,768, while the death toll was 5,871.

The need for information of people has also changed in recent months. Confidence in the information provided by the RIVM national institute for public health and the environment , and the measures taken by the cabinet is high (78-85%). This is evident from the interim results of survey questionnaires conducted by Nivel, the Netherlands institute for healthcare research and RIVM.

Twitter labels Trump's false claims with warning for first time

Posted: 26 May 2020 05:02 PM PDT

President rails against decision after his tweets on mail-in voting are marked with message: 'Get the facts'

Twitter has for the first time taken action against a series of tweets by Donald Trump, labeling them with a warning sign and providing a link to further information.

Since ascending to the US presidency, Trump has used his Twitter account to threaten a world leader with war, amplify racist misinformation by British hate figures and, as recently as Tuesday morning, spread a lie about the 2001 death of a congressional aide in order to smear a cable news pundit. Throughout it all, Twitter has remained steadfast in its refusal to censor the head of state, even going so far as to write a new policy to allow itself to leave up tweets by "world leaders" that violate its rules.

One punnet of strawberries - 17 ways to use them, from cake to ketchup

Posted: 27 May 2020 03:30 AM PDT

There is more to strawberry recipes than just cream and sugar. Try pairing them with tomatoes, avocados, basil or harissa – if you dare

If you are not going to get out there and pick strawberries, the least you can do is eat them. Britain, farmers tell us, is facing a huge strawberry glut, thanks to the cancellation of major events such as Wimbledon (where 33 tonnes of strawberries were eaten last year), along with thousands of weddings and summer parties. As civic duties go, eating loads of strawberries isn't that taxing, but they won't sit around waiting for you to come up with new ways to serve them. Here are 17 delicious ideas to help you manage your personal stockpile.

Maceration is step number one in a lot of the recipes below. At its simplest, macerating consists of hulling and halving a quantity of strawberries, tossing them in a bowl with a couple of tablespoons of sugar, then leaving them to sit in the fridge for half an hour or longer, but not long enough for them to turn into mush (meaning not overnight). Additions to the basic formula may include juice (orange or lemon), balsamic vinegar or alcohol.

WA premier admits state was told of sick ship crew but criticises federal government email

Posted: 27 May 2020 02:48 AM PDT

Mark McGowan says initial email from the agriculture department did not raise red flags about coronavirus

The Western Australian premier, Mark McGowan, has been forced to acknowledge that his state's health department was notified of sick crew members on board a live export vessel before it docked in Fremantle, but remains critical of the federal Department of Agriculture for not "backing up" such a significant message with "at least a phone call".

The admission came after the federal agriculture minister, David Littleproud, defended the actions of his department in response to McGowan's claim on Tuesday that he discovered sick crew were on the ship Al-Kuwait that day only by word of mouth from dock workers. Littleproud released an email showing a department worker had notified WA Health on Friday about three sick crew members.

Twenty years ago Nelson Mandela made an impassioned plea for international cooperation on "one of the greatest threats humankind has faced".

Aids was ravaging lives and overwhelming health systems, at its peak killing up to 1,000 people a day in South Africa.

Greece ready to welcome tourists as refugees stay locked down in Lesbos

Posted: 27 May 2020 12:15 AM PDT

In Moria, Europe's largest migrant camp, tensions are rising as life is more restricted and the threat of Covid-19 is ever present

Children fly kites between tents in the shadow of barbed wire fences as life continues in Europe's largest refugee camp. There are 17,421 people living here in a space designed for just under 3,000. Residents carrying liquid soap and water barrels encourage everyone to wash their hands as they pass by, refugees and aid workers alike. While Moria remains untouched by the pandemic, the spectre of coronavirus still looms heavy.

Greece is poised to open up to tourism in the coming months and bars and restaurants are reopening this week. Movement restrictions were lifted for the general population on 4 May but have been extended for refugees living in all the island camps and a number of mainland camps until 7 June.

Mary Tiffen obituary

Posted: 26 May 2020 06:23 AM PDT

My colleague Mary Tiffen, the distinguished economic historian, who has died aged 88 from Covid-19, will best be remembered for the groundbreaking African drylands research she conducted from the 1970s to 2000, successfully demonstrating how much farmers' own skills and capacity to innovate had been undervalued.

Her 1976 monograph on Northern Nigeria, The Enterprising Peasant, the work she led on Kenya in 1994 (More People Less Erosion) and the final comparative studies she undertook around 2000 comparing dryland areas of Kenya, Senegal, Nigeria and Niger, all focused on the ingenuity of the farmers who made a living from these difficult environments. Her research challenged, and continues to challenge, careless assumptions about the causes of desertification and appropriate policy responses.

The Kidsrights Foundation on Tuesday published its annual rankings of children's rights in 182 countries with Iceland scoring top for the second year running followed by Switzerland, Finland and Sweden.
