First indications of the effectiveness of a potential vaccine against coronavirus may be available in the autumn, the head of the GAVI vaccine alliance has told a Swiss newspaper, forecasting a long road from there to broad availability. "Unfortunately, we really do not know which vaccine will work and whether there will be one at all. If we're lucky, we'll receive indications in autumn as to [a potential vaccine's] effectiveness," the GAVI head Seth Berkley told NZZ am Sonntag in an interview published today. Continue reading... |
UK coronavirus live: Tory MPs call for Dominic Cummings to go Posted: 24 May 2020 02:49 AM PDT Seven Conservative MPs call for advisor to resign amid revelations of further breaches of lockdown rules
Tens of thousands of low income households are being denied extra support designed to ease the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, after being hit by the government's benefit cap, my colleague Michael Savage writes in the Observer today. Particularly hard-hit are private renters with children, he reports. Related: Low-income households denied coronavirus support by benefit cap
This from the Conservative MP Craig Whittaker: I totally agree that Dominic Cummings position is untenable. I'm sure he took the decision in the best interests of his family but like every decision we take we also have to take responsibility for those decisions. You cannot advise the nation one thing then do the opposite. Continue reading... |
Fears mount of Middle East coronavirus surge amid Eid celebrations Posted: 24 May 2020 12:04 AM PDT Despite lockdowns and curfews, streets in Jordan and Iran are busy for the end of Ramadan Outside bakeries in downtown Amman, queues stretched along the street and down the block. Nut retailers were mobbed, and sweet shops were down to their last desserts. It was as if coronavirus had never existed. The nights before Eid al-Fitr, the festival that ends the fasting month of Ramadan and which began on Sunday at dawn, are always busy. But this year the urgency was greater: Jordanians are celebrating this holiday under three days of full curfew. Everything is closed and nobody is allowed out of their homes for any reason. Netanyahu in the dock: Israeli PM finally faces corruption charges Posted: 23 May 2020 10:03 PM PDT If convicted on corruption charges, country's longest-serving leader could be sentenced to more than a decade in jail Accepting lavish gifts of pink champagne and boxes of Cuban cigars; colluding with one Israeli media mogul to publish positive news stories about him; bribing another to smear his political opponents. These are the damning accusations that Benjamin Netanyahu will face on the first day of a high-profile trial that kicks off today. A week to the day after he was sworn into power for a fourth consecutive term, Israel's longest-serving leader will add a new record to his collection – the first sitting prime minister to face criminal charges in court. "If [the left] had taken power in 1964 we'd be fucked," Brazil's pro-dictatorship president proclaimed at one point. Continue reading... |
Elon Musk's Crew Dragon puts America back in the space race Posted: 24 May 2020 12:33 AM PDT The launch of the billionaire's vessel will be the first manned US flight since shuttle missions were shut down nine years ago
It sounds enigmatic but the meaning is straightforward. The flag, which measures 8 inches by 12 inches, was flown on board the first space shuttle mission (STS-1) in 1981. And it was carried aloft in 2011 when the shuttle Atlantis rendezvoused with the space station on the last shuttle mission (STS-135). KSC simply stands for the Kennedy Space Centre. Family values: why Trump's children are key to his re-election campaign Posted: 23 May 2020 10:00 PM PDT Amid pandemic and economic collapse, Don Jr, Eric, Ivanka and their partners play key roles in a fierce fight for survival It begins with dramatic music and slick graphics – skyscrapers, clouds, big screens, the roar of a helicopter and chants of "Four more years!" Then come clips of Donald Trump Jr mocking Barack Obama and Joe Biden, and hurling red "Keep America Great" caps into a crowd at a rally. A fireball darts across the screen, trailing the word "Triggered". Then, with slicked-back hair, designer stubble and a green-checked shirt unlikely to win any fashion awards, the president's son hosts his own online show. Continue reading... |
Madrid and Barcelona follow starkly different paths out of lockdown Posted: 24 May 2020 02:45 AM PDT As bars and restaurants plan for further easing of coronavirus rules, an argument is raging over terraces and public space As Madrid and Barcelona prepare for the next phase of lockdown loosening, they have radically different visions for how best to return to that crucial part of Spanish life, sitting on a terraza, cup, glass or snack in hand. The two-month shutdown has given restaurateurs plenty of time to weigh up their options. But hopes that the reopening of outside tables will even begin to make up for the lost income appear wildly premature. Continue reading... |
The US doctors taking Trump’s lead on hydroxychloroquine – despite mixed results Posted: 24 May 2020 01:00 AM PDT The American Association of Physicians and Surgeons, a fringe group, offers advice that isn't 'consistent with evidence-based medicine', experts say There is an alternate universe of Covid-19 misinformation masquerading as science, which with the encouragement of Donald Trump, is proliferating among his supporters. Among the most ardent proponents of these claims is the American Association of Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS), a fringe group of less than 5,000 doctors. The group was recently cited by Trump's campaign manager, Brad Parscale, to explain the president's stunning announcement that he is taking the drug hydroxychloroquine in an attempt to protect himself against Covid-19 despite a lack of evidence of its effectiveness. Everyone wants to 'follow the science'. But we can't waste time on blame Posted: 23 May 2020 11:26 PM PDT The Royal Society president says scientists must not be made scapegoats for policy failures In 1981, a virus that had jumped the species barrier some decades earlier to infect humans began to wreak havoc among the gay community in San Francisco and New York. A taskforce was set up to study the cause of this disease, and it took a few years to identify HIV as the definitive cause of Aids and its genome to be sequenced, and nearly 15 years before a cocktail of drugs meant that having an HIV infection was no longer a certain death sentence. Forty years later, the cause of the Covid-19 outbreak in Wuhan was identified as a new coronavirus Sars-CoV-2, and its sequence determined in a matter of weeks. That, in turn, paved the way for a sensitive test for infection and, now, antibody tests for people who may have had the disease. That we know so much in such record time is due to sustained international investment in science. Continue reading... |
Sweden’s Covid-19 policy is a model for the right. It’s also a deadly folly | Nick Cohen Posted: 23 May 2020 10:00 AM PDT The Swedes were the Brexiters' poster nation, but now have Europe's worst death rate Covid-19 is nature's way of making bad situations worse. From the moment it turned the world upside down, you could have predicted that the Chinese Communist party would have arrested whistleblowers and covered up the threat to humanity. It's what it does best, after all. You would not have needed mystical powers to divine that Viktor Orbán would have used a pandemic as an excuse to turn Hungary into the European Union's first dictatorship. Nor did it take a modern Nostradamus to foresee that, if you put men who care nothing for competence, complexity, or the difference between truth and falsehood in power, you will live to regret it. Or in the case of tens of thousands who trusted Donald Trump and Boris Johnson, die needless deaths. Continue reading... |
