OPCW report set to blame Syria chemical attacks on Bashar al-Assad

Watchdog to release first report blaming president for attacks during the conflict

The UN's chemical weapons watchdog is expected to release its first report explicitly blaming Bashar al-Assad for sarin and chlorine gas attacks on civilians in Syria as efforts to establish accountability for the use of chemical agents in the nine-year-old conflict gain momentum.

Observers anticipate that public and classified versions of a report by a new unit at the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) will be published on Wednesday, close to the anniversaries of a major chlorine attack on the then rebel-held Damascus suburb of Douma that killed at least 85 people in 2018 as well as a deadly sarin attack on Khan Sheikhun in 2017 which killed at least 89. The report is believed to focus on 2017 attacks on the village of al-Lataminah.

There's a kind of hush all over the world as the reduction in human activity stops the Earth buzzing so much

The dramatic quietening of towns and cities in lockdown Britain has changed the way the Earth moves beneath our feet, scientists say.

Seismologists at the British Geological Survey have found that their sensors are twitching less now that human activity has been curtailed, leading to a drop in the anthropogenic din that vibrates through the planet.

'The impossible has already happened': what coronavirus can teach us about hope

Posted: 06 Apr 2020 10:00 PM PDT

In the midst of fear and isolation, we are learning that profound, positive change is possible. By Rebecca Solnit

Disasters begin suddenly and never really end. The future will not, in crucial ways, be anything like the past, even the very recent past of a month or two ago. Our economy, our priorities, our perceptions will not be what they were at the outset of this year. The particulars are startling: companies such as GE and Ford retooling to make ventilators, the scramble for protective gear, once-bustling city streets becoming quiet and empty, the economy in freefall. Things that were supposed to be unstoppable stopped, and things that were supposed to be impossible – extending workers' rights and benefits, freeing prisoners, moving a few trillion dollars around in the US – have already happened.

The word "crisis" means, in medical terms, the crossroads a patient reaches, the point at which she will either take the road to recovery or to death. The word "emergency" comes from "emergence" or "emerge", as if you were ejected from the familiar and urgently need to reorient. The word "catastrophe" comes from a root meaning a sudden overturning.

Coronavirus couture: the rise of the $60 designer face mask

Posted: 07 Apr 2020 02:30 AM PDT

In line with official guidance, more and more people are wearing masks – allowing some a hint of self-expression amid the pandemic

While self-quarantining in her New York apartment recently, fashion journalist Sara Radin ordered a floral top, matching scrunchie and complimentary face mask constructed from the same blue, berry-printed fabric. Radin, who is recovering from a presumed case of Covid-19, took a selfie in the full ensemble and posted it on her Instagram.

"I've been scrolling and will see other people post matching sets," says Radin, a former trend forecaster. "The mask is the new 'must-have accessory' … but literally. You must have it."

Trump and 3M reach deal to allow N95 face masks to be exported to Canada

US officials had stopped shipment at 3M factory after Trump invoked Defense Production Act to halt exports to Canada and beyond

The Trump administration has agreed a deal with the US manufacturer 3M to import more than 166 million respirators from China over the next three months and allow 3M to continue exporting its US-made respirators.

The agreement breaks a deadlock which resulted in Washington stopping nearly three million of the specialized masks from being exported to Ontario, stirring fears that Canada's most populous province would run out of supplies for medical staff battling coronavirus by the end of the week.

Can a face mask protect me from coronavirus? Covid-19 myths busted

Posted: 07 Apr 2020 01:11 AM PDT

The truth about how you can catch coronavirus, who is most vulnerable and what you can do to avoid infection

Wearing a face mask is certainly not an iron-clad guarantee that you won't get sick – viruses can also transmit through the eyes and tiny viral particles, known as aerosols, can penetrate masks. However, masks are effective at capturing droplets, which is a main transmission route of coronavirus, and some studies have estimated a roughly fivefold protection versus no barrier alone (although others have found lower levels of effectiveness).

Devastated by coronavirus, did Bergamo's work ethic count against it? | Anna Bonalume

Posted: 06 Apr 2020 05:19 AM PDT

My home town took pride in hard work and enterprise. But a reluctance to go into lockdown might have been disastrous

Lombardy is one of the richest and most productive regions in Italy and Bergamo is its beating heart. It is also my home town: the city where I spent my childhood and adolescence. The province's million inhabitants are characterised by a strong sense of belonging: to region and to family. They take pride too in a no-nonsense, practical approach to life and a powerful work ethic.

Today, Bergamo holds the European record that no town wants: it is the place where the coronavirus pandemic has cast its darkest shadow. Bergamo is a lazaretto of pain, where the priority of hospital managers is to select only the patients they think will survive. Its undertakers are so overwhelmed they have to ask neighbouring communes to take their corpses for cremation.
