Coronavirus UK live: Lockdown measures 'to be reviewed this week' as row over PPE continues

Reports suggest some cabinet ministers urging easing of restrictions, as the government faces ongoing questions over protection for medical staff

Actor Christopher Eccleston has said he hopes the NHS will no longer be a "political football" following the coronavirus pandemic.

The ex-Doctor Who star said there should be "no more threats to the NHS".

I'm hoping now... that the world has changed, the NHS will no longer be a political football for any of the parties and that it is protected because it is the greatest expression of Britain we have.

It's our nation's conscience and now it is saving our lives and a lot of people are doing it without protective equipment.

This is Nicola Slawson taking over the liveblog. Thanks for joining me.

The world's largest oil producers have agreed a historic deal to cut global oil production by almost 10% to protect the market against the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

By Sunday evening, the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency had confirmed at least six fatalities in the state from the severe weather. Mississippi governor Tate Reeves declared a state of emergency after saying several tornadoes had struck the state.

In northern Louisiana, up to 300 homes and other buildings were damaged. Utility companies reported thousands of power outages.

Paraguayans go hungry as coronavirus lockdown ravages livelihoods

Posted: 12 Apr 2020 05:15 AM PDT

Early, aggressive measures seem to be controlling the disease but the pandemic has laid bare the country's social inequalities

When Covid-19 arrived in South America, Paraguay was one of the first countries to take measures to contain the virus, closing schools and banning public gatherings after just the second confirmed case on 11 March.

The nationwide lockdown seems to be controlling the spread of the disease, but it has created another problem: large numbers of Paraguayans are going hungry in their own homes.

Poem constructed from emails received during quarantine goes viral

Jessica Salfia's widely shared poem First Lines of Emails I've Received While Quarantining has the refrain 'As you know, many people are struggling'

Everyone has received at least one and now they've been elevated to poetry: a US teacher has highlighted corporate opportunism during the coronavirus outbreak, in a viral poem titled First Lines of Emails I've Received While Quarantining.

Jessica Salfia, an English teacher and writer in West Virginia, posted the poem on Twitter on Saturday. "In these uncertain times / as we navigate the new normal, / Are you willing to share your ideas and solutions? / As you know, many people are struggling," the poem begins.

Goldie Hawn: ‘I was born with a high set point for happiness’

Posted: 12 Apr 2020 10:00 PM PDT

One of the biggest film stars of the 70s and 80s, Hawn left acting and producing behind for 15 years. She talks about Hollywood, patriarchy, dancing – and how meditation changed her life

Goldie Hawn is Hollywood royalty, but that's not how she sees it. Sure, she won an Oscar at 24, for her role starring opposite Ingrid Bergman and Walter Matthau in 1969's screwball comedy Cactus Flower, and was a box-office favourite for much of the 1970s, 80s and 90s. The ultimate tongue-in-cheek ditzy blonde expanded successfully into producing, too, with movies such as Private Benjamin and Overboard. Kurt Russell, her co-star in the latter, has been her partner for 37 years. And yet, she says: "I consider myself more a dancer than anything else."

Her mother was a dance teacher and, pre-fame, Hawn performed as a ballerina and go-go dancer before being spotted on a can-can line in Los Angeles and drafted into TV comedy. She go-go danced on TV, too, barefoot in a bikini, with graffiti all over her body. Even now, at 74, she posts compelling videos of herself dancing around her home with an almost childlike lack of self-consciousness.

The underground in London during coronavirus lockdown – photo essay

TfL gave the Guardian access over two days to document its reduced tube service, which is still running during the Covid-19 crisis

The barrel-vaulted tunnels and platforms of the tube stations traversed by millions of Londoners a day are empty.

Some, grotty and bleak with just the sound of a creaking escalator breaking the eerie silence, others such as Lord Foster's Canary Wharf and the art deco Arnos Grove, laying bare their architectural magnificence in the newly ordained coronavirus peace.

I was in prison for two decades – here's what I learned about isolation

Posted: 12 Apr 2020 10:00 PM PDT

I often thought I would lose my mind from being entombed and cut off from the world, but then something happened

I've been watching the rain outside my bedroom window for several hours. An eerie, familiar feeling haunts me as I observe the outside world from inside four walls. It's starting to feel like this room is all I've ever known. I feel disoriented, like I'm still in prison. I sip my coffee and steady my thoughts.

I'm a 41-year-old woman who has spent almost half her life incarcerated. I sometimes fear there's nothing meaningful I can contribute to society, but with a global pandemic forcing much of the world into lockdown, I have an unexpected opportunity: to share the lessons from my prison experience that might help others to adjust.

Canada asks Tehran to delay black box data download until travel restrictions for their experts to take part are lifted

The Covid-19 pandemic will delay the investigation into the downing of a Ukrainian international flight over Iran, after Canada asked Tehran to delay downloading data on the black boxes due to coronavirus travel restrictions.

Kenya is mobilising against coronavirus – but like the rest of Africa we need help | Kennedy Odede

Homegrown efforts are boosting preparedness, but they need to be strengthened before the pandemic gathers force

When Covid-19 hits Africa, will we be ready? This was a distant thought just one month ago. Now, as cases climb, we are braced for impact.

As the crisis deepens in the world's largest economies, taking up most of the media bandwidth, Africa hardly makes the headlines. In international news outlets, the idea of crisis in Africa is met with resignation, not outrage. It is almost as if the media perceives crisis as the status quo in Africa, something expected. Unavoidable.

Documents contradict UK government stance on Covid-19 'herd immunity'

Posted: 12 Apr 2020 09:30 AM PDT

List of possible interventions included simulating impact of allowing majority to be infected

The inclusion of "targeted herd immunity" as a possible UK government response to the Covid-19 pandemic – in a list of possible interventions considered for analysis by a contractor – appears to contradict strong denials by the health secretary 10 days earlier that it was any part of government policy.

Matt Hancock gave that response on 14 March after two senior government officials had said publicly that achieving "herd immunity" was a key aim, prompting widespread alarm among medical experts that the British government was planning to allow the majority of the population to become infected.

US's global reputation hits rock-bottom over Trump's coronavirus response

International relations expert warns policy failure could do lasting damage as president insults allies and undermines alliances

Donald Trump's response to the coronavirus pandemic, which he once dismissed as a hoax, has been fiercely criticised at home as woefully inadequate to the point of irresponsibility.

Yet also thanks largely to Trump, a parallel disaster is unfolding across the world: the ruination of America's reputation as a safe, trustworthy, competent international leader and partner.

Call it the Trump double-whammy. Diplomatically speaking, the US is on life support.

How Covid-19 brought Britain back together | podcast

Posted: 12 Apr 2020 07:00 PM PDT

After a divisive period dominated by Brexit, the pandemic has brought about a newly fostered spirit of community engagement and everyday heroism

It was the middle of March and, like almost everyone else in the country, Annemarie Plas, from south London, was sitting at home under the new conditions of the coronavirus lockdown. It was then that she had an idea about organising a community clap for NHS workers after seeing something similar in her home country of the Netherlands. Now, every Thursday at 8pm, millions of people head out into the streets to clap and cheer for the people risking their lives on the frontline. She tells Anushka Asthana how one idea became a national outpouring.

The crisis is bringing people together in other ways too. Naveed Khan is using a customised vehicle to deliver food and supplies to vulnerable people across his home city of Bradford. Lucy Welling, an NHS nurse, had her bike stolen as Britain went into lockdown. But followers on social media rallied round and helped find the bike amid several offers of a new one. The episode inspired a new movement, #TourDeThanks, to offer up bikes to key workers. In Nunhead, south London, Claire Sheppard set up Nunhead Knocks to help out those living in isolation. In Sheffield, 23-year-old Sarah-Jane Clark is one of a number of colleagues who moved in to a care home to look after residents safely.
