‘My life is not over. But it feels like it is sometimes’: the Rev Richard Coles on losing his partner

Posted: 08 Mar 2020 11:00 PM PDT

The former pop star's world was shattered when his partner of 12 years died. Three months on, he talks about the 'madness' of grief

Death is par for the course for the Rev Richard Coles. Whether it's pastoral care for the bereaved, discussions about the afterlife with parishioners or being called out to perform the last rites – death comes with the job. But since his partner, the Rev David Coles, died in December, a lot about death has taken Coles by surprise.

"I got in the other night," he says, "and fed the dogs and lit a fire and cooked some supper. I got into my pyjamas and had a nightcap. I then looked at my watch and it was 10 past six."

Coronavirus live updates: stock markets plunge as infections pass 110,000

Posted: 09 Mar 2020 02:07 AM PDT

With cases spiking sharply across Europe and emergency measures in place from California to Saudi Arabia, investors have sent shares tumbling

The EU council, the Brussels institution that brings together diplomats and ministers from the member states for policy-making, said this morning it would hold only essential meetings due to Coronavirus – and officials have suggested everyone avoid "handshakes and kisses".

Meanwhile, the former prime minister of Romania, Dacian Cioloș, who leads the Renew group in the European parliament, is seeking either the suspension of the chamber or a substantial reduction to its agenda. The session this week has already been moved to Brussels rather than Strasbourg due to the epidemic.

Iranian state-linked media have announced that 16 people have died from alcohol poisoning in the south-western city of Ahvaz, the latest in a wave of deaths apparently driven by the mistaken belief that alcohol is a vaccine against the coronavirus. Alcohol is banned in the country but is still illegally imported or brewed at home – the latter occasionally resulting in deaths from bad batches.

The head of Iran's crisis management authority, Ismail Najjar, is the latest official who has contracted the virus, which has infected 6,500 people according to Iran's official tally. Nearly 200 people have died, including at least 49 people over the weekend.

We won’t eradicate FGM if we keep misunderstanding its history | Sada Mire

Posted: 09 Mar 2020 01:00 AM PDT

Despite a century of campaigning the practice persists. But in my work as an archaeologist, I've learned how we can end it

This year marks a hundred years of official campaigning against female genital mutilation, a movement which began with an international conference in Egypt in 1920. Yet the practice is still going strong: according to Unicef, 200 million women alive today are affected by it and it is still practised in almost 30 African countries. After so much campaigning, we have to ask: why is FGM not eradicated?

Over the last century there have been numerous global resolutions, and FGM is now acknowledged internationally as a human rights violation. It has been criminalised in several western nations, including the UK, and in 19 African countries, FGM carries some sort of penalty. Media campaigns have helped, including the Guardian's. And grassroots organisations in the west, in Africa and in other affected countries are fighting the practice incessantly.

World Bank accused over ExxonMobil plans to tap Guyana oil rush

Washington DC-based bank grants funds to redraft south American state's oil laws by lawyers linked to oil giant

The World Bank is to pay for Guyana's oil laws to be rewritten by a legal firm that has regularly worked for ExxonMobil, just as the US producer prepares to extract as much as 8bn barrels of oil off the country's coast.

The World Bank has pledged not to fund fossil fuel extraction directly, but it is giving Guyana millions of dollars to develop governance in its burgeoning oil sector, as the south American country prepares for an oil rush led by ExxonMobil and its partners.

Pornhub needs to change – or shut down

Posted: 09 Mar 2020 12:01 AM PDT

A petition is calling on the site to prevent non-consensual videos being posted – and highlights the lack of industry regulation

The news that 350,000 people – and counting – have signed a petition calling on Pornhub – the world's most popular porn site – to stop posting non-consensual videos and marketing them as "pornography" is not surprising to me.

Pornhub's argument that "extremists" are lobbying to shut them down is ridiculous. I'm non-religious, liberal and sex positive and in no way "anti-porn".

'Stagnant' global health system is dominated by rich states, rooted in colonialism and undervalues women, says study

A small group of privileged men based in Europe and the US preside over a global health system which is 70% male, according to new research.

The Global Health 50/50 report, published on Monday by University College London's Institute of Global Health, warns it could take 54 years until the world's major health organisations have equality in their leadership.

Donald Trump needs a media he despises to fight coronavirus | Emily Bell

Posted: 08 Mar 2020 07:00 AM PDT

Containing the epidemic requires both reliable news coverage and truth from the president

It has taken until the last year of Donald Trump's presidency for the existential risk this narcissistic authoritarian poses to be fully exposed. There have been other tests: the unconstitutional squeezing of immigration; the brief week or so when war with Iran felt inevitable; the imprisoning of children in cages along the United States' southern border; not to mention the engagement with foreign governments in seeking personal gain. But it is the arrival of Covid-19, the infectious respiratory virus, that threatens a presidency reliant on a strategy of all narrative and no truth.

Trump has a core support base of people who are most vulnerable to Covid-19. Older people – particularly those who might resist taking the kind of interventionist measures being suggested – are very much at risk. Trump may have to halt his famous rallies in the middle of election season. More alien to him even than that, if containment of the virus is ever going to work he will have to build a good-faith alliance with the press to push out a unified and coherent message.

Can a face mask stop it spreading? Coronavirus facts checked

Posted: 08 Mar 2020 04:43 AM PDT

The truth about how easy it is to catch Covid-19, who is vulnerable and what you can do to avoid infection

Wearing a face mask is certainly not an iron-clad guarantee that you won't get sick – viruses can also transmit through the eyes and tiny viral particles, known as aerosols, can penetrate masks. However, masks are effective at capturing droplets, which is a main transmission route of coronavirus, and some studies have estimated a roughly fivefold protection versus no barrier alone (although others have found lower levels of effectiveness).

The draconian steps come after the number of coronavirus cases in Europe's worst-hit country reached 5,883 on Saturday.
