| Joe Biden wins Texas primary, topping off remarkable Super Tuesday surge – live Posted: 04 Mar 2020 04:20 AM PST
One of America's most enthusiastic political commentators has swung in with his early-morning take on the Super Tuesday results. Donald Trump continued with his attempts to make the case that the Democratic establishment is ganging up to deny Bernie Sanders the nomination – a suspicion shared by many of Sanders' supporters. The Democrat establishment came together and crushed Bernie Sanders, AGAIN! Even the fact that Elizabeth Warren stayed in the race was devastating to Bernie and allowed Sleepy Joe to unthinkably win Massachusetts. It was a perfect storm, with many good states remaining for Joe! So selfish for Elizabeth Warren to stay in the race. She has Zero chance of even coming close to winning, but hurts Bernie badly. So much for their wonderful liberal friendship. Will he ever speak to her again? She cost him Massachusetts (and came in third), he shouldn't!
Elizabeth Warren must also be considering her future, especially after coming third in her home state of Massachusetts. But her campaign was certainly putting on a brave face last night, firing out a bullish email that said: "Here's the bottom line: There are six more primaries just one week away, and we need your help to keep up the momentum." The campaign also has financial constraints that come with a unionized staff of over 1,000 people — the largest field operation in the race besides Mike Bloomberg's — even after raising $29 million in February. With a payroll at over $6 million per month, the campaign likely needs to keep at least several million dollars on hand to cover paychecks, benefits, and other assorted shutdown costs to avoid going into debt. Warren was able to raise a significant amount of that money with her strong debate performances, but there is not another debate until March 15. Continue reading... |

| 'I photographed 35 women, 10 are still alive': tragedy of the Isle of Women Posted: 04 Mar 2020 12:00 AM PST It is thought to be Europe's last matriarchy, a tiny Baltic island where women are in charge and weddings can last three days. Photographer Anne Helene Gjelstad's portraits of Kihnu are a lament for a dying way of life Anne Helene Gjelstad was working on a photography project on the tiny Estonian island of Kihnu when one of her neighbours invited her to an old woman's funeral to take pictures. The neighbour dressed the Norwegian photographer in blue mourning clothes, as is custom, before bringing her into the kitchen where Koksi Leida's body lay in an open casket. During the ceremony, the women of the Baltic island prayed, mourned and sang, before the men arrived and the casket was taken outside. Witnessing these powerful moments of sisterhood transformed Gjelstad's outlook. "This," she says, pointing to an image of the women sitting around Leida, "is one of the most emotional moments I have experienced as a photographer. It was like going way back in time and being present at the same time. I thought I would do a book on Estonian handicrafts – but all of a sudden it was about the old women and their culture, which is changing so rapidly." Continue reading... |

| Girls stay longer in school but obesity, suicide and sexual violence remain risks Posted: 03 Mar 2020 11:01 PM PST A quarter of a century after world conference pledged to advance gender equality, reports finds opportunities and rights still lacking Girls are far less likely to get married or drop out of school than ever before, but worryingly high rates of obesity, suicide and sexually transmitted infections underline how uneven global progress has been for them over the past 25 years, according to a report published on Wednesday. They warn that if discrimination continues, the 2030 gender equality targets are unlikely to be achieved. Continue reading... |
| I’ve paid a high personal price to become a Green member of Austria’s government | Alma Zadić Posted: 04 Mar 2020 02:00 AM PST I've suffered death threats and racial abuse, but this is my party's chance to shape policy for the better Shaking the hand of the Austrian president, Alexander Van der Bellen, during my inauguration as Austria's justice minister in January was a profoundly moving moment for me and for my family. But it was moving also for a great many people who came to Austria as migrants or refugees. To see a former child refugee from the Bosnian war sworn in as a government minister in the country to which her family fled in 1995 was for many hugely symbolic – a signal that they, too, had now been fully accepted as part of Austrian society, with the right to participate in the country's politics and even to shape it. But from day one, becoming the embodiment of this acceptance also unleashed a torrent of hate directed at me from the right and from proponents of the far right in Austria. Resentments that had been held down over years resurfaced. In just two months, the Austrian authorities have recorded more than 25,500 incidents of publicly made hate speech and hate comments directed at or about me, from racist insults to calls to go back where I came from. Because some of these messages included credible death threats, the Austrian security services issued me with 24-hour protection. "A bullet is reserved for you," one of these messages said. | Warren persists in Democratic race despite crushing Super Tuesday losses Posted: 03 Mar 2020 08:20 PM PST The Massachusetts senator is in fourth place, even losing her home state – but she seems to have her hopes on a contested convention Five months ago Elizabeth Warren was the Democratic frontrunner. Heading into Super Tuesday, she was in desperate need of winning just a single state, after trailing miserably since Iowa kicked off voting at the start of February. Instead, Warren watched as all 14 Super Tuesday states went to rivals Joe Biden or Bernie Sanders – including, crushingly, her home state of Massachusetts, where she seems set to finish third. Spanish flu is estimated to have killed between 50 million and 100 million people when it swept the globe in 1918-19 – more than double the number killed in the first world war. Two-thirds of its victims died in a three-month period and most were aged 18-49. So what lessons has the world's deadliest pandemic taught us? Continue reading... |
| The Hanau terror attack shows the need for honesty about racism in Germany | Mithu Sanyal Posted: 03 Mar 2020 06:58 AM PST Angela Merkel using the word 'racist' to describe the murders was a quantum leap, but I dont trust others in her party I have to admit that when I heard the news my first thought was: "I hope the perpetrator wasn't a migrant." The press would surely go at us hammer and tongs again, warning about the danger posed by immigration in general and Muslims in particular. There would be endless articles and talk shows discussing the threat. My second thought was: "Thank God it is a white guy." On 19 February, Tobias Rathjen went into two shisha bars in the town of Hanau, near Frankfurt, shooting people he described as "foreign". In his "manifesto", if you can call such a rambling text a manifesto, he stated he wanted to cleanse Germany from … us. Two weeks on from the carnage in Hanau, I wonder how I could have felt relieved. Continue reading... |
