Bernie Sanders reassesses campaign after Biden builds formidable lead

Posted: 18 Mar 2020 11:25 AM PDT

The Vermont senator's presidential campaign has seen little but bad news recently as it admits 'losing the battle over electability'

The Vermont senator Bernie Sanders got thumped in the latest round of Democratic presidential primary contests and, once again, Sanders and his team are reassessing their path forward.

It's becoming a familiar cycle: former vice-president Joe Biden beats Sanders, the darling of progressive grassroots voters; the Sanders campaign concedes the situation isn't ideal, and spends some time reassessing. That's what happened earlier this month after the Super Tuesday contests on 3 March, and this Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.

Analysis of satellite date reveals astounding loss of 600bn tons of ice last summer as Arctic experienced hottest year on record

Last year's summer was so warm that it helped trigger the loss of 600bn tons of ice from Greenland – enough to raise global sea levels by 2.2mm in just two months, new research has found.

The analysis of satellite data has revealed the astounding loss of ice in just a few months of abnormally high temperatures around the northern pole. Last year was the hottest on record for the Arctic, with the annual minimum extent of sea ice in the region its second-lowest on record.

Critics fear hard-hitting report on scandal will be buried amid coronavirus crisis

Wholesale reform of a "reckless" and "defensive" Home Office is expected to be recommended in a hard-hitting review into the causes of the Windrush scandal when it is released by the home secretary on Thursday.

The Windrush Lessons Learned review is expected to criticise Home Office staff and government ministers for their continued failure to admit the magnitude of their mistakes and the scale of damage inflicted on thousands of legal UK residents who were wrongly classified as illegal immigrants, with catastrophic results.

Spain still paying bonuses to 115 police given medals by Franco

Posted: 18 Mar 2020 10:00 PM PDT

Pension top-ups criticised as it is revealed one officer has been accused of acts of torture

More than four decades after the death of the dictator Francisco Franco, the Spanish government has said it continues to pay bonuses to 115 police officers who were awarded medals during his regime, including one officer accused of multiple acts of torture.

The revelation came last week in response to a parliamentary question about a custom of boosting the pensions of officers who win awards. With each medal yielding a pension bonus of as much as 15%, the question asked how many now-retired officers had been given honours before 1979 and, as such, receive topped-up pensions from the Spanish government.

In a complaint filed with the superior court in the US Virgin Islands, Maxwell said she had "no involvement in or knowledge of Epstein's alleged misconduct" and the financier had repeatedly promised to support her financially.

Officials say proposed 38,000-tonne sea barrier could damage sand dunes at Doonbeg resort

The climate crisis just became more personal for Donald Trump, after authorities in Ireland rejected an attempt by his Doonbeg golf resort to build a wall to combat rising sea levels.

The planning agency An Bord Pleanála said on Wednesday that the proposed 38,000-tonne rock barrier at Doughmore Bay could damage dunes that straddle the golf course in County Clare, on the Atlantic coast.

We won’t stop until she's free, says sister of jailed Saudi activist

Family of women's rights campaigner Loujain Hathloul pledge to fight on after her court hearing is cancelled

Loujain al-Hathloul first realised that speaking up could make a difference when she was five years old. Her father, a navy veteran who wanted his children to be strong swimmers, took her to the local pool where other visitors chastised him for bringing a girl in a pair of swimming trunks to the male-only area.

"He told them that if they were uncomfortable with what a five-year-old girl was wearing then that was their problem," said Loujain's sister, Lina. "After that, lots of fathers started taking their little girls along to swim."

Australia and New Zealand announce border closures, Japan's deputy PM calls Olympics 'cursed'

The European Union's industry chief has called on Netflix and other streaming services to take action to reduce congestion on the internet, amid surging demand as millions of people confined to their homes go online.

Thierry Breton, the European commissioner for industry, told Netflix chief executive Reed Hastings that he and other operators should take responsibility for preventing internet congestion by switching to standard definition rather than high definition.

Streaming platforms, telecom operators and users, we all have a joint responsibility to take steps to ensure the smooth functioning of the Internet during the battle against the virus propagation

The commission would also like internet users to reduce their data consumption, by using Wi-FI or choosing lower resolution for content.

The Afro-Mexican population are often overlooked in Mexico's cultural mosaic, but this year marks a statistical first

The fashion industry is facing calls to step in and protect the wages of the 40 million garment workers in their supply chains around the world who face destitution as factories close and orders dry up in the wake of the Covid-19 epidemic.

Many factories in garment-producing countries including Bangladesh, Cambodia and Vietnam are already closing due to a shortage of raw materials from China and declining orders from western clothing brands.

The mountain's closure is devastating for many in a Himalayan nation that relies heavily on trekkers and climbers

The tiny airport at Lukla, perched on the edge of a mountain high in Nepal's Himalayas, usually echoes with the roar of propeller planes flying a constant stream of adventure-seekers into the small town, known as the gateway to Mount Everest.

During the peak spring tourist season, tens of thousands of trekkers and mountaineers arrive to test themselves on the popular trek to Everest base camp, and perhaps go on to climb the world's highest peak.

Saving a city millions of gallons of water – one tap at a time

Posted: 18 Mar 2020 10:00 PM PDT

A duo in India have been spurred into action to fix pipes to conserve the water supply in Kolkata

There is light drizzle as Vijay Aggarwal and Ajay Mittal manoeuvre their two-wheelers through the labyrinthine alleyways of Kolkata's Tiljala road slum. Early Sunday morning, the neighbourhood is teeming with activity – women sit on their haunches washing clothes and utensils; half-soaped children scurry in and out of their baths; towel-clad men wait to brush their teeth. Every 50 metres a community pipe gushes out water – plastic bottles, jerry cans and metal buckets are lined up to fill.

The duo along with their plumber, Ravi Shaw, who rides pillion, make their way to the first huddle of people and get to work. All it takes is a blow and twist of a wrench – the nozzle pops loose. Shaw fishes out an orange and white tap from his bag and fits it. While Aggarwal hurriedly plasters a Save Water Save Life sticker on to a lamppost, Mittal tells the people to close the tap once they are done and points out the helpline number on the sticker.

'You are beautiful': the Kenyan beauty parlour serving female heroin users

Pedicures, manicures and blow-drys bring addicts through the door to help them access rehabilitation

Naima Said stands back and studies her handiwork. "Not quite," the self-taught beauty therapist mumbles, her forehead furrowed in frustration. Then she delicately dabs her client's eyelid with a squishy makeup sponge. She's not finished yet.

Several years ago Said, 31, used YouTube videos to train herself in everything from dying hair to pedicures. Now she runs the Beauty Corner – a small but perfectly formed parlour in Mombasa on the Kenyan coast. Every weekday at 8am, she lays out her equipment and waits for women to walk through the door. Like Said, those who seek out her services are addicted to heroin, or in recovery.

Peacetime constraints ditched in the war for economic survival | Larry Elliott

Posted: 18 Mar 2020 11:25 PM PDT

The Covid-19 outbreak is forcing politicians and central bankers to set aside ideology and orthodoxy to prevent a global collapse

It is as if the lights have been switched off. The global economy has been plunged into darkness as countries hunker down in response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Most recessions develop gradually over time. When the last one started in 2008 it took the Bank of England six months to spot it. This time it is different. Then it was a financial virus, this time it is the real thing. Commentators often say the economy is hitting the wall or is falling off a cliff on the weakest of evidence. Today the cliches are horrifyingly true.

As an MP in self-isolation, I've seen New Zealand's collective power to respond to a crisis | Chlöe Swarbrick

Posted: 18 Mar 2020 09:13 PM PDT

Everything that was once an urgent priority has evaporated. What matters right now is people's health, and their family's futures

It's day three of my self-isolation. I returned to Aotearoa New Zealand on Monday night from a long-planned family wedding in Australia, itself book-ended by apocalyptic circumstance. Fires and floods rolled out the red carpet, while rapid global escalation of Covid-19 brought it to a finale.

I had booked flights back directly into Wellington, our capital city, because I'd intended to return immediately to work on Tuesday morning with the sitting of Parliament. Those intentions had been wiped clear on the weekend, with calls between caucus members and staffers confirming all arrivals back into the country would be required to quarantine themselves for a fortnight. To limit further travel, it transpired I'd be locking myself into a Wellington apartment, the opposite end of the North Island from my home of Auckland.

Key issues for Transport for London during coronavirus lockdown

Posted: 18 Mar 2020 05:05 PM PDT

Train and bus services are to be limited as travel is restricted, raising questions for both passengers and operators

More draconian restrictions may be needed in London to stop the spread of the coronavirus, with guidance to avoid non-essential travel and stay home being ignored by some, while confirmed cases of sickness escalate rapidly. The prime minister, Boris Johnson, told his Wednesday press conference that he was prepared to take "further and faster measures" to tackle the disease.

Transport for London (TfL) is now moving to cut the number of trains and buses running throughout the week, most likely to the level of weekend schedules. On Wednesday night it announced it was closing up to 40 stations with no interchange from Thursday onwards. But what are the key issues transport chiefs need to consider when limiting services?
