| Teen models, powerful men and private dinners: when Trump hosted Look of the Year Posted: 13 Mar 2020 11:00 PM PDT In the early 90s, Donald Trump judged the world's biggest modelling competition - since hit by allegations of abuse. This is how the people who were there remember it. Special investigation by Lucy Osborne, Harry Davies and Stephanie Kirchgaessner On 1 September 1991, a large private yacht cruised towards the Statue of Liberty. It was a clear, breezy evening, and from the upper deck of the Spirit of New York, a golden sunset could be seen glinting off the Manhattan skyline. Downstairs, a party was in flow. Scores of teenage girls in evening dresses and miniskirts, some as young as 14, danced under disco lights. It could have been a high school prom, were it not for the crowd of older men surrounding them. As the evening wore on, some of the men – many old enough to be the girls' fathers, or even grandfathers – joined them on the dancefloor, pressing themselves against the girls. One balding man in a suit wrapped his arms around two young models, leering into a film camera that was documenting the evening: "Can you get some beautiful women around me, please?" | Hounded by war, can Idlib's desperate civilians outrun final assault? Posted: 13 Mar 2020 03:41 AM PDT Accustomed to being exiles in their own land, many Syrians are resigned to the next cruel twist fate may deliver them In the midst of a winter storm last month, Mahdi al-Beij pitched his tent on the edge of a graveyard, hoping to have finally outrun a war that had hounded him and his clan throughout the province of Idlib for six insufferable years. Floodwaters pooled nearby and a biting cold swept across the plains as the family settled in; accustomed to being exiles in their own land, but exhausted by their fifth move under fire and resigned to the next cruel twist fate may deliver them. Even if that meant being buried where they sheltered. Continue reading... |

| Posted: 14 Mar 2020 01:00 AM PDT From cold-water swimming to gardening, the psychological benefits of the great outdoors have inspired a growing genre of books, but can nature improve our mental health? There is a revealing moment in Isabel Hardman's book where the author, a political journalist who lives with post-traumatic stress disorder, joins a forest therapy session. The therapist encourages her to "connect" with herself and "experience nature better". Hardman wanders through the wood and finds a small hornbeam, which is twisting up towards the light, struggling to make its way in the shade of a mature oak. She is attracted to its shape, admires its bark, and draws parallels with her own life: how long it takes to heal and grow, how the scars we gather can still be beautiful "like the zig-zagging trunk of this young tree". She reaches up and snaps one of its twigs: the tree is dead. "Serves me right for being so dreadfully whimsical," Hardman writes. "There seemed to be no neat life lesson here, nothing you'd want to write on a fridge magnet or share on social media. I'd come here hoping to connect with myself, and instead I'd been drawn to a tree that was secretly dead." Continue reading... |

Posted: 14 Mar 2020 12:00 AM PDT The fierce fight between the progressive and centrist wings of the party has had an impact as the party begins to look ahead to the November battle It's hard to imagine right now but Bernie Sanders and Joe Biden both know that in a few months they're going to have to put on a united front to have any chance of beating Donald Trump. Over the last few days, as the former vice-president has collected the majority of delegates needed to clinch the Democratic nomination for president, Sanders, the Vermont senator and liberal icon, has opted to press on in the primary. That sets up an ongoing bruising battle between the two candidates for the immediate future even as the vast majority of observers believe Sanders will eventually have to grit his teeth and fall in line behind Biden. | How Spanish flu nearly ripped apart Australia's fledgling federation | Paul Daley Posted: 13 Mar 2020 12:00 PM PDT A nation supposedly forged in the hellfire of war almost crumbled in the face of a virulent threat at home Newly federated Australia, with its population not yet 5 million, was still enduring shocking fatalities on the European western front when its authorities began paying attention to the virulent strain of pneumonic influenza sweeping Britain. Early Australian awareness of the "Spanish influenza" – an epidemic in Britain by mid to late 1918 – came with an acknowledgment that the new states grown of old colonies would need to stick together should the virus reach this isolated continent. | Herd immunity: will the UK's coronavirus strategy work? Posted: 13 Mar 2020 11:23 AM PDT Ministers look to have given up on containment in favour of a novel approach some experts are wary of Herd immunity is a phrase normally used when large numbers of children have been vaccinated against a disease like measles, reducing the chances that others will get it. As a tactic in fighting a pandemic for which there is no vaccine, it is novel – and some say alarming. It relies on people getting the disease – in this case Covid-19 – and becoming immune as a result. Generally it is thought that those who recover will be immune, at least for now, so they won't get it twice. Continue reading... |
| Inside an ICU: how long can we stay calm in the face of the coronavirus crisis? Posted: 13 Mar 2020 10:42 AM PDT Now, more than ever, the NHS must prioritise care - not just for frail, elderly and vulnerable people but for staff too
There's a strange mood in the intensive care unit (ICU) where I work at the moment. It's one of controlled planning, paperwork and people pulling together in ways that on a normal day perhaps wouldn't happen. ICUs are as prepared as they can be. Locally business as usual has made way for preparations for caring for high numbers of patients. We are finding every ventilator we may have and identifying every suitably qualified member of staff. We will work together to fill gaps as best we can. Continue reading... |

A closer look at the numbers Posted: 13 Mar 2020 09:44 AM PDT What the statistics from the outbreak so far can tell us about infection and mortality rates The startling spread of the coronavirus across the globe is causing understandable alarm. But though it is still too early to draw definitive conclusions about how many deaths may occur, the statistics do point to general trends that can get lost in the drama. At present, one thing that does seem clear is that the vast majority of people who get the disease will survive. Continue reading... |
