In a move described as "unprecedented" and "extraordinary" by two former heads of the home civil service, Sir Philip Rutnam accused Patel of orchestrating a "vicious" campaign against him and of "shouting and swearing, belittling people, making unreasonable and repeated demands – behaviour that created fear and that needed some bravery to call out." | Unsealing of Vatican archives will finally reveal truth about ‘Hitler’s pope’ Posted: 29 Feb 2020 10:33 PM PST Historians can now pore over secret files from the papacy of Pius XII, who has long faced accusations of being a Nazi sympathiser New light will be shed on one of the most controversial periods of Vatican history on Monday when the archives on Pope Pius XII – accused by critics of being a Nazi sympathiser – are unsealed. A year after Pope Francis announced the move, saying "the church isn't afraid of history", the documents from Pius XII's papacy, which began in 1939 on the brink of the second world war and ended in 1958, will be opened, initially to a small number of scholars. Channel 4's Dispatches filmed the children working 40-hour weeks in gruelling conditions, picking coffee for a daily wage little more than the price of a latte. The beans are also supplied to Nespresso, owned by Nestlé. Last week, actor George Clooney, the advertising face of Nespresso, praised the investigation and said he was saddened by its findings. | Please be quiet: my search for a noise-free life Posted: 01 Mar 2020 02:00 AM PST Pinging mobiles, sniffling passengers, desk diners… The incessant noise of modern life never stops – and it's infuriating Emma Beddington. So what's the best way to find some peace and turn down the volume? Ten years ago, I bought a box of earplugs. My partner occasionally snored and, at about £12 for 200 pairs, it seemed an absolute bargain. That was more than enough for a lifetime of peace, surely? I ran my hand through the slippery packets of foam slugs; they were yellow and pink, like rhubarb and custard sweets. I felt like an earplug millionaire. The last time I put my hand in the box, I hit cardboard: a lifetime's supply of earplugs, nearly gone. There are rhubarb and custards under my pillow and in my handbag, in the pockets of every coat I own, in our vacuum cleaner, even stuck to my back as I blearily shower in the morning. I measure out my life in rhubarb and custard earplugs. Continue reading... |

| Can a nation be both open and in control? The UK is about to find out | Hans Kundnani Posted: 01 Mar 2020 12:15 AM PST As talks on trade deals begin, the government should make a virtue of a potential new economic model This week the UK will start negotiating its future relationship with the European Union. The government is trying to convince the EU it is serious about its red lines and prepared to walk away from negotiations if the UK's "regulatory freedom" is not accepted – a no-deal scenario that would result in tariffs between the EU and the UK. Yet at the same time the government is telling the world that the country is "re-emerging after decades of hibernation as a campaigner for global free trade", as Boris Johnson put it a few weeks ago. The EU is understandably confused. It's odd to claim to be campaigning for free trade at the exact moment you are creating new barriers to trade. If we were so committed to frictionless trade, we wouldn't have left the EU; and having decided to leave, we would have sought to maintain a close economic relationship with the EU, like that of Norway, rather than seek a basic trade deal like Canada's. | The west ignores the growth of Islamist insurgents in Africa at its peril Posted: 29 Feb 2020 06:05 AM PST Thousands are being killed across the Sahel region in what is becoming the new battlefront with militants Imagine the reaction in Britain if armed Islamist jihadists were to burst in on a Sunday church service in a Surrey village, spraying automatic weapon fire at the congregation and killing the vicar and at least 23 worshippers. Horror and fury would be unconfined. The attack would be an immediate worldwide media sensation. This is exactly what happened to Protestant churchgoers in Pansi, a village in northern Burkina Faso, on 16 February – though you would hardly know it, judging by the ensuing international silence. The increasing frequency of such atrocities in Africa's Sahel region is one possible explanation for this apparent indifference, although there are others. Continue reading... |
| ‘I might vote for him’: how Bloomberg is courting Georgia’s liberals Posted: 01 Mar 2020 01:00 AM PST The candidate's field operatives are targeting Democratic voters other candidates might not have the resources to thanks to his open-ended budget As Dena Chandler reviewed the schedule for her monthly Democratic party meeting in Madison county, Georgia, one notice stood out to her. The group would be hearing from a Mike Bloomberg campaign field organizer, which seemed strange to the 25-year-long resident of the tiny town of Carlton. | Coronavirus: Hancock says shutting down cities may become necessary – latest updates Posted: 01 Mar 2020 02:32 AM PST USA, Australia and Thailand report first deaths from coronavirus as two frontline doctors in China die and bans are put in place on large gatherings. Follow live news
Isolating UK cities, as the Chinese authorities did to Wuhan where coronavirus was first detected, may be necessary to stop the the spread of the outbreak, the health secretary, Matt Hancock, has conceded. Speaking to the BBC's Andrew Marr Show, Hancock also confirmed that the NHS was planning to bring doctors out of retirement if the coronavirus becomes more widespread.
Hancock also denied Labour claims Boris Johnson was shirking his responsibility by delaying chairing a Cobra emergency committee on the outbreak until Monday. He told Sky: The prime minister has been all over this. I have daily calls with him often more than once a day. And I've been updating cabinet weekly. I've been chairing those Cobra meetings across government – a case of ministers and officials working incredibly well together. And the prime minister is fully on top of all of this, and and that's the way it should be. Last week he did a night shift at a hospital to find out what it's really like on the frontline at two o'clock in the morning. I applaud him for doing that Continue reading... |

| Yes, it is worse than the flu: busting the coronavirus myths Posted: 29 Feb 2020 05:08 AM PST The truth about the protective value of face masks and how easy it is to catch Covid-19 Many individuals who get coronavirus will experience nothing worse than seasonal flu symptoms, but the overall profile of the disease, including its mortality rate, looks more serious. At the start of an outbreak the apparent mortality rate can be an overestimate if a lot of mild cases are being missed. But this week, a WHO expert suggested that this has not been the case with Covid-19. Bruce Aylward, who led an international mission to China to learn about the virus and the country's response, said the evidence did not suggest that we were only seeing the tip of the iceberg. If borne out by further testing, this could mean that current estimates of a roughly 1% fatality rate are accurate. This would make Covid-19 about 10 times more deadly than seasonal flu, which is estimated to kill between 290,000 and 650,000 people a year globally. Continue reading... |
