| Poland makes partial U-turn on Holocaust law after Israel row Posted: 27 Jun 2018 07:11 AM PDT Threat of jail removed for those who attribute crimes of Nazi Germany to Poles Poland's president, Andrzej Duda, has signed a legal amendment to decriminalise the false attribution to Poland and Poles of crimes committed by Nazi Germany during the Holocaust, signalling a partial retreat on contentious legislation enacted this year. The legislation, which threatened prison terms of up to three years for any breaches, sparked a war of words between Polish and Israeli politicians and an outpouring of antisemitic rhetoric in Poland, as nationalist and pro-government media sought to portray the country as under attack from an international anti-Polish campaign orchestrated by foreign powers and Jewish advocacy groups. Staffan de Mistura, the special envoy for Syria, told the UN's security council the attack by Syrian armed forces, backed by Iranian militia, would put more than 750,000 lives at risk. He said more than 45,000 people had already been displaced. Continue reading... |

| Mbandaka has fought off Ebola – but can the DRC's equator city recover? Posted: 27 Jun 2018 03:00 AM PDT Aside from the threat of disease, this colonial city on banks of the Congo has been blighted by generations of underinvestment and bad government Mbandaka, once prosperous and charming, with electricity and running water 24 hours a day, hasn't moved on since the 1970s. Quite the opposite – this city, situated at the confluence of the Congo and Ruki rivers, has declined. Rainwater gnaws at the tarmac of its roads due to lack of drainage; houses collapse into the sodden ground of its estates; its socioeconomic life exudes poverty and misery, all the more glaring beside the affluent minority. Deadly malnutrition is creeping into many families. In late May, news that Ebola had reached Mbandaka added an edge of fear to this dismal portrait. The latest outbreak had already killed nearly 30 across the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), and reaching a city of 1.2 million threatened a serious escalation. |

Presidents come and go, and their policies can swiftly be reversed, as Trump has demonstrated in seeking to erase much of Barack Obama's legacy. But justices are appointed for life to the supreme court, which plays an outsized role in American life compared to equivalent bodies around the world. Continue reading... |

| The new John Bolton: Trump ally swaps fire and brimstone for a spoonful of sugar Posted: 27 Jun 2018 11:15 PM PDT Trump's national security adviser seems to have abandoned his firebrand persona – and in Moscow the change of tone was striking The trademark walrus moustache was still there, and the penetrating gaze was just the same, but in almost every other way the new John Bolton and the old John Bolton seemed very different. The old Bolton was a firebrand pundit, raining derision from television talk shows and editorials on US diplomats promoting compromise with America's enemies. Almost a year ago he wrote a commentary describing Vladimir Putin as a serial liar responsible for an "act of war' in the form of his interference in the US election and warned: "We negotiate with Russia at our peril".
