| Bully-boy Erdoğan is a threat to Turkey – and the world | Simon Tisdall Posted: 22 Jun 2018 12:00 AM PDT The Turkish president is a dictator in all but name. Turkish voters should kick him out The prospect of a triumphantly re-elected Recep Tayyip Erdoğan armed with sweeping new presidential powers is deeply alarming to many Turks, but it is also a scary prospect for the international community. Since taking national office 15 years ago, Erdoğan has turned from neighbourhood bully-boy into geostrategic threat. Under his choleric, resentful tutelage, Turkey has ceased to be a reliable friend of Europe and the US. If he gets his way in Sunday's polls, Erdoğan, a dictator in all but name, is likely to foment further instability in Syria and throughout the Middle East region. Latest estimates suggest Erdoğan, who is facing stronger than expected opposition, will be forced into a second round run-off in July. Likewise, his neo-Islamist Justice and Development party, in power since 2002 and accused of economic mismanagement and corruption, may lose its overall parliamentary majority. Continue reading... |

| ‘Knights of anguish’ – Argentinian media react to World Cup humbling Posted: 22 Jun 2018 12:00 AM PDT The country's pain after La Albiceleste's 3-0 loss to Croatia percolated through its newspapers and sports magazines It never looked certain for Argentina. There were always questions left to answer but obscured by the euphoria, anxiety and demands of their country, something felt off. Drawing with Iceland, a moral loss, showed the team's unease, but pundits pardoned a team that faced a fully parked bus. Croatia would be the real test. The quiet might of their midfield, featuring Real Madrid's conductor and lead architect, Luka Modric, promised a game of back and forths where Argentina would prosper by taking advantage of gaps. Argentinian media listened to Modric who, outlining his tactics, said Croatia would cut off Javier Mascherano and added one sharp line: "Messi can't do it all." Did Sampaoli listen?
