Irish novelist warns of Brexit-style revolt against elite on abortion vote

Posted: 07 Apr 2018 04:04 PM PDT

As referendum day nears, Patrick McCabe says Dublin media liberals could pay for snobbery towards rural Ireland

One of Ireland's most critically acclaimed novelists has warned that the country's referendum on abortion in May could be a "Brexit/Trump" moment for Ireland, exposing similar divisions between rural voters and city-dwellers.

Patrick McCabe, the author of bestsellers The Butcher Boy and Breakfast on Pluto, both made into feature films, said there was a danger that sections of the "metropolitan media in Dublin" could alienate voters in rural constituencies and help usher in a no vote against abortion reform.

Indigenous people are being displaced again – by gentrification | Jack Latimore

Soaring rents are destroying the communities Aboriginal people have painstakingly built in Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney. It all feels very familiar

Walking into the inner-city Brisbane suburb of West End one morning, I witnessed a group of Aboriginal "parkies" being moved on from a corner of the main road. "So nothing's really changed for blackfullas in Brisbane," I thought as I continued along Boundary Street, named for the city's racist 19th-century policies of urban segregation.

The struggle for Melbourne: has the world's 'most liveable' city lost its way?

Posted: 08 Apr 2018 11:00 PM PDT

Plonking an Apple store in Melbourne's biggest civic square has caused a long-simmering debate about the future of Australia's most progressive city to boil over

In Melbourne's Federation Square, people are sitting on the steps, eating lunch among the pigeons under a sky that threatens drizzle. The cascading crazy paving and interlocking sandstone facades supposedly, in the architects' vision at least, represent the desert heart of Australia. Across the road, a banner hangs from the walls of St Paul's Cathedral: "Let's fully welcome refugees."

Melissa, an academic, walks out of the Koorie Heritage Trust, housed in the Yarra building on the square's south side. It is due to be demolished to make room for a "flagship" Apple store, under plans announced by the state government a few months ago out of the blue and without public consultation.

Australian Cities Week: what it is and how you can get involved

In collaboration with Guardian Australia, Guardian Cities is devoting a week to exploring Australian cities – and we want to hear from you

Australia's cities face challenges as distinct as their characters, but one is consistent across all of them: change.

The nation of nearly 25 million has one of the highest rates of population growth of any OECD country, overwhelmingly focused on its cities – Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth in particular. Such rapid expansion presents opportunities; the question is, are Australian cities ready to seize them?

What awaits England fans at the World Cup in Russia?

Posted: 07 Apr 2018 10:00 PM PDT

Memories of violence at Euro 2016 are still fresh – but do fans and experts believe the hooligan threat is real?

In a Moscow pub decorated with British football memorabilia, a Russian supporter of local side CSKA was happy last week to reassure English fans planning to travel to this summer's World Cup. Konstantin, or Kostya for short, says he doubts there will be violence because the toughest Russian hooligans have already lost their taste for fighting England supporters.

"It's like being a mountain climber," said Kostya, a member of one of the Russian capital's prominent CSKA "firms", after recalling how a group of Russian fans smashed through a contingent of English fans in Marseille in June 2016, using extreme violence. "Once you've reached the summit, you don't do it again. There's no point in beating them again. So they don't have to be afraid to come to Russia, nothing's going to happen."

Markets higher as Trump calms trade war fears - business live

Posted: 09 Apr 2018 01:38 AM PDT

Investors hope for talks to resolve trade dispute, while new figures on UK housing show better than expected performance in March

Here's a bit of gloom from the eurozone.

Consumer sentiment fell in April for the third month in a row, due to concerns about a possible trade war between the US and China and a slowdown in global growth.

Even though the current situation is still rated as excellent...the prospects for the future have become massively gloomier. The customs disputes, fuelled by US president Donald Trump, are leaving their traces.

Elsewhere in the FCA's annual business plan, the watchdog says it's going to be looking closely at high-cost credit this year. Rent-to-own, home credit, catalogue credit and debt management advice is falling into its crosshairs.

The FCA's renewed focus on high-cost credit comes at a time of booming growth in wider consumer credit, back to levels unseen since the financial crisis. And as interest rates rise. It warns even gradually rising rates could hurt those in high levels of debt.

The tweet is all the more remarkable for containing some of Trump's first direct criticism of Vladimir Putin, the Russian president, and his role in protecting Assad.
