The monks, the Dachau survivors and the concert that heralded freedom Posted: 21 Apr 2018 02:30 PM PDT On the anniversary of the camp's liberation, the forgotten story of escaped prisoners who set up a Jewish hospital in a Bavarian monastery has been championed by one Benedictine monk The monastery of St Ottilien rises above the green Bavarian pastures of southern Germany. It is an unlikely setting for the story of an extraordinary Jewish renaissance in the weeks following the 1945 liberation of Dachau, which is being commemorated this week. It is a bright but chilly Saturday afternoon and the large baroque complex is packed with visitors enjoying a drink in the beer garden after a hike in the countryside. As he tucks into a large plate of wiener schnitzel and downs a lager, Father Cyrill, who is presiding over memorial events that will take place in the monastery, expresses his sadness that most of the people who come to St Ottilien have no idea of what took place here. Abellio, NS and why the Amsterdam express always goes via Dublin Posted: 21 Apr 2018 11:00 PM PDT The Dutch state railway is under serious fire for leasing its trains in low-tax Ireland. And it's not the only operator to do so The sleek intercity train connecting Amsterdam to Rotterdam zips between the two cities in just 40 minutes and, with a walk-up price of just €15.40 (£13.50), puts our fares to shame. The Dutch railways are still nationally owned, operated by Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS), and the route between the two cities claims a 100% punctuality record. But the Dutch have been in uproar over what might be another record: one of the most shameful tax deals in Europe, and one that throws the spotlight once again on Ireland's dubious corporate tax policy. In recent years, the Dutch have been horrified to discover that while they buy their train tickets from a state-owned company, a significant chunk of the money has been funnelled through Ireland. That's because NS Financial Services, 100% owned by NS, bought the trains, then leased them back to NS, while being incorporated in Ireland. In doing so, its profits have come under Ireland's 12.5% company tax rate, rather than the 25% prevailing in the Netherlands. Continue reading... |
Israel celebrates but is war with Iran looming? Posted: 21 Apr 2018 10:59 PM PDT Israelis enjoyed a lavish party last week to mark the nation's seven eventful decades, but the threat to its existence could hardly have been greater There were fireworks, concerts, torch processions and parties throughout the country. In Jerusalem the night sky was illuminated by 300 drones that coalesced to form images of favourite Israeli symbols, such as the national flag and a dove with an olive branch in its mouth. The celebrations included a live, televised retelling of Jewish history dating to biblical times. In one scene children with yellow stars pinned to their clothes fled marching Nazi soldiers. Another showed pioneers building the fledgling Jewish state. Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel's prime minister, helped lead the national extravaganza, despite objections that his presence contradicted the event's traditional, non-political character. This moment – the 70th anniversary last Wednesday of Israel's independence, according to the Hebrew calendar – marked the country's emergence as a rising world power, he declared. Mozambique prays for rain as water shortages hit country’s poor Posted: 21 Apr 2018 04:05 PM PDT Taps in capital city of Maputo being turned off every other day as climate change exacerbates southern African drought In the township of Chamanculo, in Maputo, Mozambique, a network of household taps made the community water pump obsolete years ago, freeing residents from the daily burden of lugging massive jerrycans of water long distances. But a water crisis, partly caused by an ongoing drought affecting much of southern Africa, is already reversing progress in this coastal city. An emergency "orange alert", declared last February by the country's disaster management council after failed rains, has triggered such strict water rationing across the capital city that the taps are turned off every other day and irrigation is banned.
