Use inheritance tax to tackle inequality of wealth, says OECD Posted: 12 Apr 2018 08:44 AM PDT Wealth inequality is even greater than income inequality and is on the rise, says new report Governments should consider deploying the taxation system to reduce wealth inequality, with inheritance tax the favoured route, according to the west's leading economic thinktank. Wealth inequality is greater than income inequality and evidence suggests disparities have increased in recent decades, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development said in a report. Wealth – such as property, savings, share portfolios and pensions – grows and becomes self-reinforcing because the rich have more to invest in higher-yielding assets, greater financial knowhow and better access to investment advice, the OECD said. 'The best in the world': a love letter to Australia's public pools Posted: 12 Apr 2018 11:00 PM PDT Tracing his conversion from pool refusnik to aquatic evangelist, Benjamin Law asks: is swimming the Australian version of baptism? In Australia, you're expected to just know how to swim. It makes sense: more than four in five Australians live within easy walking or driving distance of the sea. As writer Anna Funder recently said of those who call the driest continent on Earth home: "We cling to the edge of the continent, and we swim from a very early age." Growing up, I hated swimming – which was awful, because I didn't just grow up in Australia, I grew up in Queensland: the sun-saturated state that gifted us Olympic gods like Kieran Perkins, Susie O'Neill, Grant Hackett and Stephanie Rice, a state where the main trade seemed to be sugar, coal and championship swimmers. Trump would reconsider TPP trade pact on 'better' terms – business live Posted: 13 Apr 2018 02:30 AM PDT As tensions over Syria ease, trade developments and US bank earnings are in focus. European stock markets, oil prices, sterling and the dollar are all up.
And here are Mahony's thoughts on China moving to trade deficit in March for the first time in a year. Chinese trade data has been the big focus for markets after the biggest economy in Asia posted its first dollar-denominated trade deficit in a year. A sizeable downward shift in Chinese exports will certainly provide heightened anxiety over where we go from here, with the threat of a trade war looming large over an economy which is still heavily reliant upon international demand for their products.
Joshua Mahony, market analyst at at online trading firm IG, has taken a closer look at the UK stock market and the pound. The FTSE has continued to underperform its peers this morning, with the index trading in the red despite gains across German, Spanish and French indices. Dovish minutes from the European Central Bank yesterday, coupled with a wider story of dollar weakness has ensured the pound continues to outperform against its main peers. With the pound hitting a two-month high against the dollar and ten-month high against the euro, it comes as no surprise that the internationally focused FTSE 100 suffers, while the domestically focused FTSE 250 joins its European counterparts in the green. After years of quietly complaining about the name, a group of residents in the tight-knit southern Ontario township of Puslinch, population 7,300, launched a campaign last autumn aimed at convincing their neighbours that it was time for change. Trump's tweets run far ahead of US military's readiness to hit Syria | Peter Beaumont Posted: 12 Apr 2018 06:37 AM PDT Pentagon not tactically prepared to back up president's bellicose language with US firepower Despite Donald Trump's tweet suggesting that a US strike on Syria was imminent – and warning Russia to "get ready" – the US naval and other forces in the region suggest his rhetoric may have outpaced military readiness for anything but the most limited action. Trump's tweet – which he appeared to row back on on Thursday – appears to have given Syrian forces ample warning to move key assets, suggesting that any strike now would be largely symbolic and have little meaningful impact on the conduct of the war in Syria. |
