China’s influence looms as Sierra Leone goes to the polls Posted: 06 Mar 2018 09:00 PM PST Beijing has been a close ally of outgoing president and is seen as a powerful player in an unusually open election A strange slogan went up from the hundreds of Sierra Leoneans struggling to catch a glimpse of Samura Kamara, the presidential candidate for the ruling All People's Congress. "We are Chinese!" they chanted during the campaign stop last week. "We are Chinese!" Sierra Leone will vote on its first new government in 10 years on Tuesday in an election that a prolonged economic crisis and a slow recovery from the Ebola epidemic has left unusually open. A new party led by a former UN executive, the National Grand Coalition, stands a chance of upsetting the traditional two-party system. |

Russia suspected of using 'dumb' bombs to shift blame for Syria war crimes Posted: 06 Mar 2018 06:17 AM PST UN sources say Moscow's use of weapons similar to those used by Syrian regime could be attempt to mask involvement in airstrikes The Russian air force has used unguided "dumb" bombs in Syria, in what UN sources say could be an effort to shift responsibility for possible war crimes and civilian deaths to their ally, the Syrian regime of Bashar al-Assad. UN sources told the Guardian that Moscow's use of less accurate bombs, which are closer in their capability to the Syrian air force's weapons stockpiles, could be intended to make it more difficult for war crimes investigators to identify those responsible for civilian deaths from airstrikes in Syria. Posted: 07 Mar 2018 01:57 AM PST Rolling coverage of the day's political developments as they happen, including Theresa May and Jeremy Corbyn at PMQs and the publication of the EU's draft Brexit guidelines for the UK-EU trade talks
Ruth Davidson, the Scottish Conservative leader, has claimed that the Scottish government "actively wants a row" with Westminster over where devolved powers should be held post-Brexit. In an article for the Scotsman, she accused the SNP of "constitutional gamesmanship" and claimed their decision to push emergency legislation on EU withdrawal through Holyrood was a "massive political power play from this SNP government". She said: The only conclusion I can reach from the last week is that the SNP now actively wants a row. As things stand, the Scottish government has no influence over these EU powers and never has, because they are held in Brussels. The SNP has never previously complained about this and Nicola Sturgeon's position, apparently, is that they should stay there.
Look out for a range of MPs from all parties wearing 50:50 Parliament pins during today's PMQs in honour of international women's day, which falls tomorrow. |

Trade wars? Africa has been a victim of them for years | Afua Hirsch Posted: 06 Mar 2018 11:00 PM PST The continent has borne the brunt of taxes and tariffs from the US and Europe. No wonder some believe Africa needs its own version of Donald Trump What Africa needs, a friend of mine is fond of saying, is an African Trump: an "Africa first" leader who is not afraid of rubbing the rest of the world up the wrong way, someone willing to rip up traditional alliances, forgo historic links, forge a united and common purpose among Africa's diverse nations, and then make their own needs – unambiguously – the priority. It's a surprising way to frame things, but these are surprising times, and political ideologies are upside down. Protectionism is having a moment in the sun, in a useful reminder of the degree to which our perception is skewed of which countries practise competitive capitalism and which do not.
