Will 2018 be the year of the neo-luddite?

Posted: 04 Mar 2018 07:14 AM PST

The downsides of technology's inexorable march are now becoming clear – and automation will only increase the anxiety. We should expect the growing interest in off-grid lifestyles to be accompanied by direct action and even anti-tech riots

One of the great paradoxes of digital life – understood and exploited by the tech giants – is that we never do what we say. Poll after poll in the past few years has found that people are worried about online privacy and do not trust big tech firms with their data. But they carry on clicking and sharing and posting, preferring speed and convenience above all else. Last year was Silicon Valley's annus horribilis: a year of bots, Russian meddling, sexism, monopolistic practice and tax-minimising. But I think 2018 might be worse still: the year of the neo-luddite, when anti-tech words turn into deeds.

The caricature of machine-wrecking mobs doesn't capture our new approach to tech. A better phrase is what the writer Blake Snow has called "reformed luddism": a society that views tech with a sceptical eye, noting the benefits while recognising that it causes problems, too. And more importantly, thinks that something can be done about it.

Returning to Haifa review – disturbing drama is a plea for peace

Posted: 05 Mar 2018 02:02 AM PST

Finborough, London
A Palestinian couple return to their former home to be confronted by its new Israeli owner in this unsentimental, gently political family drama

Commissioned by New York's Public Theater, this play never reached the stage because of pressure from the board. They missed a trick because it is a powerful and disturbing piece now receiving its belated premiere. Adapted by Ismail Khalidi and Naomi Wallace from a novella by the Palestinian writer Ghassan Kanafani (1936-72), it works on several levels: as a poignant family drama, as a plea for Israeli-Palestinian understanding and as a warning of what will follow without some form of reconciliation.

The play shows a Palestinian couple returning to Haifa in 1967 in search of the house and son they were forced to abandon 20 years previously during mass evictions by Israeli forces. They constantly debate whether they are right to make the journey. When they arrive, they find their old home occupied by the widowed Miriam who fled from Poland after her father was sent to Auschwitz and who adopted the couple's son and brought him up as a naturalised Israeli.

Descendants of slaves celebrate Brazil land rights victory

Posted: 05 Mar 2018 01:00 AM PST

Cachoeira Porteira is a quilombo, a settlement in the Amazon forest founded by descendants of escaped enslaved people

It was a modest ceremony for such a significant victory: it is not every day that the descendants of enslaved people are given the title to their land. But there was no doubt of its importance at a time when the protection of Brazil's traditional rural communities is threatened by a conservative government in league with powerful agribusiness interests.

This weekend, Simão Jatene, the governor of Pará state, signed a document giving land titles for more than 220,000 hectares of Amazon forest to an isolated community populated by descendants of enslaved people who escaped centuries ago.

Italy's election poses more questions than it answers

With the two traditional parties falling short, Italy's future is anything but certain

When Italians wake up on Monday morning it is very likely that they will have no idea who their next prime minister will be, even after every ballot has been counted.

While analysts said yesterday they were prepared for surprises, most anticipated that the results would end in deadlock, and set off a period of intense negotiations in Rome that would aim to cobble together a government by the end of March.
