The rise – driven by airstrikes, which killed almost double the number of civilians in 2017 compared with the previous year – coincided with US-led military operations to reclaim the Islamic State strongholds of Mosul, in Iraq, and Raqqa, in Syria.

The time anomaly of the Woolwich foot tunnel and other portals of London

Posted: 08 Jan 2018 01:43 AM PST

A curious blog has been documenting instances of 'inter-dimensional gateways' appearing in London. But what are they, and who is behind the writing?

Over Christmas you might have seen a blogpost entitled The Woolwich Foot Tunnel Anomaly floating across your social media. Purporting to feature an eyewitness account of what went wrong with the delayed Woolwich foot tunnel refurbishment, it described how workers on the project found they could spend hours down in the tunnel working, and emerge only minutes after they'd entered. Colleagues would radio across to ask for materials to be sent over to find they'd already arrived by the time they put the radio down. People were sharing it on social media with the slightly quizzical attitude of "This can't be true. Can it?"

The article was posted on the Portals of London blog, a website that claims to be working "towards a catalogue of London's inter-dimensional gateways". It's an example of how websites and social media accounts can be used to create fictional self-contained worlds that are just on the cusp of believability.

UK must take lead on injustice in Cameroon | Letters

Posted: 07 Jan 2018 11:16 AM PST

Jackie Fearnley writes about the desperate plight of the Southern Cameroons and says Britain has a responsibility to put pressure on Paul Biya's government

I'd like to draw attention to the plight of political prisoners in Cameroon (Cameroon split as anglophones call for creation of 'Ambazonia', 3 January). I am in touch with some of those enduring horrible conditions in the notorious, severely overcrowded prison of Kondengui, many of whom have been there for over a year. Every few weeks they are brought before a military tribunal (which can impose the death penalty) but each time they appear, no witnesses are present and no case is brought. Some of them will appear again on 19 January and they are appealing for journalists and human rights organisations to be present to witness this cruel charade. They would like pressure to be brought on the government of Paul Biya to end this inhumane treatment of protesters. While there are so many in prison, and others unaccounted for, there can't even be any thoughts of dialogue, nor can the thousands of people forced to flee to Nigeria come back while they have no assurance of safety.

Since decolonisation there have been two plebiscites: the first when the ex-British Southern Cameroons were offered only the choice of joining La République du Cameroun in a federation or of becoming part of Nigeria, then a second vote 10 years later when they were asked if they would like to become part of a unitary state (thus losing the federated status and their star on the flag), and were apparently offered the choice of oui or yes (ie no choice).

Tears, despair and shattered hopes: the families torn apart by Trump's travel ban

Posted: 08 Jan 2018 02:00 AM PST

As Trump's ban quietly came into effect last month, US citizens and residents saw loved ones' approved visas suddenly denied – with no end in sight

Five-year-old Gamila Almansoob has asked the same question for years: "When are we going to daddy?" Each time, the Yemeni girl's mother gives the same reply: "When we get the paperwork."

Gamila's father, Ramy Almansoob, a US citizen, moved to Virginia in 2015 with the hopes that his wife and three daughters could soon follow and escape their war-torn home country. After a lengthy vetting process, the visas were approved on 4 December 2017. That same day, however, the US supreme court ruled that Donald Trump's travel ban on six Muslim-majority countries, including Yemen, could go into effect.

Trump's 'voter fraud' commission is dead – but activists fear new DHS push

Posted: 07 Jan 2018 04:00 AM PST

Panel pushed by Kris Kobach was a 'shit show' but Kansas secretary of state is now looking to immigration and homeland security to fuel effort

Donald Trump's quixotic year-long quest to prove the 2016 election was marred by millions of fraudulent votes has become, in the words of White House insiders, a "shit show" that appears unlikely to fare much better now the effort is shifting from a widely loathed presidential commission to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

Voting rights activists rejoiced this week when the White House announced it was abandoning the eight-month-old Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity, a body run by some of the country's most notorious advocates of voter suppression.
