| Yemeni children infected by cholera at rate of one every 35 seconds Posted: 13 Jun 2017 11:10 PM PDT Save the Children warns rate of infection has tripled in two weeks, fuelled by near-famine conditions and crippled infrastructure The cholera outbreak in Yemen is escalating at an alarming rate, with experts warning that a child is now infected with the disease every 35 seconds, according to Save the Children. Grant Pritchard, the charity's director in Yemen, warned the country is on "the verge of total collapse" as a combination of near-famine conditions and crippled infrastructure fuel the spread of cholera. | Tax evaders exposed: why the super-rich are even richer than we thought Posted: 14 Jun 2017 01:00 AM PDT Analysis of a massive trove of data – much of it leaked from tax havens – suggests that inequality levels across the world should be revised upwards dramatically The statistics on inequality – those used, for instance, in Thomas Piketty's bestseller, Capital in the Twenty-First Century – only include the income and wealth the taxman sees. So how high is inequality when also accounting for what he doesn't see? Recent leaks from tax havens suggest the gap between the rich and the rest is even wider than we think. Tax records are invaluable for the study of economic inequality. They contain detailed information about the income (and, in some countries, wealth) of taxpayers. Much of this information comes directly from employers and banks, and is therefore reliable. And because tax records exist as far back as the early 20th century, they can be used to shed light on the long-term evolution of inequality. Continue reading... |
| Jeff Sessions calls accusations of Russia collusion an 'appalling lie' Posted: 13 Jun 2017 01:17 PM PDT Attorney general gives fiery rebuttal in testimony to Senate intelligence committee about his contacts with Russian ambassador The US attorney general, Jeff Sessions, has rejected allegations that he took part in collusion with Moscow to influence the 2016 election as an "appalling and detestable lie". In a heated, often testy hearing of the Senate intelligence committee, Sessions refused to answer questions about his discussions with Donald Trump, on the grounds that the president could claim executive privilege over those discussions at a later date. | Singapore PM Lee Hsien Loong denounced by siblings Posted: 14 Jun 2017 01:16 AM PDT Extraordinary display of disapproval shocks country where open criticism of political leaders is discouraged The younger siblings of Singapore's prime minister, Lee Hsien Loong, have launched a scathing personal and political attack on him, saying they have lost confidence in him as a leader and accusing their "big brother omnipresent" of abusing his power. Lee Wei Ling and her brother Lee Hsien Yang said in a public statement released in the early hours of Wednesday that they were "disturbed by the character, conduct, motives and leadership" of the premier and his wife. | Apple chief: driverless car venture is ‘the mother of all AI projects’ Posted: 13 Jun 2017 10:27 AM PDT Tim Cook confirms tech giant is working on 'autonomous systems', but is tight-lipped on whether it is making its own vehicle Apple has shed new light on its top-secret driverless car project, as chief executive Tim Cook described the challenge of building autonomous vehicles as "the mother of all" artificial intelligence projects. Cook said Apple was ploughing resources into developing technology to control driverless vehicles, although he refused to rule out the Silicon Valley firm building its own car at some point. The Apple boss spoke as shares in his company and other US tech firms came under pressure this week amid investor concerns that a sector-wide boom is losing steam. Continue reading... |

In a directive that was communicated verbally to members of the Capitol Hill press corps on Tuesday morning, reporters were told they would no longer be able to film interviews with US senators without previously granted permission from the Senate rules committee as well as the senator whom reporters seek to interview. However, by Tuesday afternoon, a spokesperson for the Senate rules committee told the Guardian that rules for journalists had returned to the status quo from the past. Continue reading... |

The Eurosceptic governments in Poland and Hungary have refused to take in anyone under a plan agreed by a majority of EU leaders in 2015 to relocate migrants from frontline states Italy and Greece to help ease their burden. | Street wars 2035: can cyclists and driverless cars ever co-exist? Posted: 13 Jun 2017 11:00 PM PDT Driverless cars appear unstoppable – except of course you can simply walk in front of one and force it to brake. Could this conundrum eventually mean a return to a dystopian world of segregated urban highways? Picture yourself cycling down a city street in the year 2035. You're late for a meeting, but the road you must cross ahead has recently been designated an "Autonomous Vehicle-only" route, where platoons of driverless cars whizz past, mere centimetres apart. You can't ride across it, as cyclists and pedestrians have been banned for fear they would slow the driverless traffic. You must find a way around. The clock is ticking. Do you attempt to climb the barrier and make a dash through the traffic? As you wait, you see a group of kids on a side street which is open to all vehicles. They are darting between driverless pods and forcing them to a stop. It's a popular game. Continue reading... |
| The pipeline feeding billions to Putin ... evading sanctions on the way Posted: 13 Jun 2017 11:00 PM PDT Nord Stream 2 will transport gas from Russia to Europe, endangering habitats, fuelling climate change and funding Putin's regime for decades Tough western sanctions on Russia may be squeezing the economy – but that's only half the story. The other half you can understand better by attending a public hearing into a project that will finance the Putin regime for another 50 years. The project is called Nord Stream 2. It involves piping gas directly from Russia to Germany through the Baltic sea, and it is unaffected by sanctions. Its progress means that Europe is excoriating the Putin regime diplomatically while at the same time promising to inflate the same regime with billions of gas dollars. Continue reading... |

| 'If we stopped poaching tomorrow, elephants would still be in big trouble' Posted: 13 Jun 2017 10:00 PM PDT Ivory poaching is the most immediate, urgent threat to Africa's elephants. But even if that can be tackled, they will have to fight humans for land, food and water It is the dead of night. The day's red-dust heat has given way to a cooling breeze. A hundred frogs chirp urgently. Tim and his crew are preparing for another stealth raid. Their mission is highly dangerous and now there's a new threat: armed men are following them. This is the scene repeated nightly on the eastern fringes of Amboseli national park in Kenya, close to the border with Tanzania. Tim is an elephant who, along with a group of up to 12 other males, has developed a taste for the tomatoes and maize growing on local farms on the outskirts of the park. The armed men are park rangers who have been tasked with keeping him from the crops – and saving his life. Continue reading... |
| Harassment, stigma and fatwas: what is it like to cycle as a woman? Posted: 13 Jun 2017 04:52 AM PDT From Uganda to Tajikistan, women are fighting to enjoy the freedom of two wheels. How is it for you? Share your experience and help us build a global profile A man once pulled up next to me in a van, opened the window and shouted "lucky saddle". There was another time when a car of four men pulled up behind me in the middle of busy junction, leered and asked me if I wanted to get in the car. Or when a man cycled past and slapped my bum when I was riding along the canal tow path. They were three fairly minor incidents which I hadn't given much consideration, until a few conversations made me realise that insidious sexual harassment is standard fare for female cyclists in London. To the point that journalist Dawn Foster once mapped all of her experiences – which included having her top pulled down while waiting at the traffic lights – on her blog 101 wankers, and was inundated with responses from women who talked about being spat at, slapped and having objects thrown at them. Separately, reports are suggesting the chancellor, Philip Hammond, will seek to keep the UK in the EU customs union. Continue reading... |
| 'Gorilla moms': The women rescuing Congo's endangered primates Posted: 13 Jun 2017 11:30 PM PDT NGOs are working with local women and rape survivors in the DRC to conserve habitat for bonobos, gorillas and chimpanzees, and care for orphaned babies Ongoing violence in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has taken a heavy toll on the country's women. Shocking levels of sexual violence have given the country a label as the "most dangerous place to be a woman". Civil strife, along with bushmeat hunting and human encroachment, also threatens its wildlife – especially gorillas, bonobos and chimpanzees. Bonobos have been vanishing rapidly from their only habitat – the DRC – for the past 20 years, according to the African Wildlife Foundation. Meanwhile, just 3,800 critically endangered Grauer's gorillas remain in their DRC homeland. Chimpanzees, found in 21 African countries including the DRC, are on the IUCN Red List as endangered. | Helen Clark: I hit my first glass ceiling at the UN Posted: 13 Jun 2017 11:06 PM PDT Interview: The former New Zealand prime minister says the rejection of her bid to become the next UN secretary general was a blow for women, but the security council weren't looking for an 'independent-minded leader' In the United Nations' 72-year history, eight of its nine secretaries general have been decided behind closed doors by a few powerful countries. But not the ninth. Last year's appointment process resembled American Idol: a public-facing contest with a strong social media component and a side of drama and double-crossing. When the process to replace Ban Ki-moon got under way in April 2016, it was said to be unprecedented in its transparency. Helen Clark, one of the eight unsuccessful challengers, is quick to put that into context. "The 'transparency' – I'll put that in quotation marks – I don't think that had any impact on the outcome," she says. "What it did was expose how opaque the real process was." Continue reading... |

| Britain and the US once ran the world. Now they’re all at sea | Linda Colley Posted: 13 Jun 2017 10:05 PM PDT The parallels are striking. Both were global and political giants. Now both must adjust to their loss of influence Events last Thursday on the two sides of the Atlantic were at once momentous and in some ways connected. In Washington the former FBI director James Comey used his open hearing before the Senate intelligence committee to call the president of the United States a liar – an astonishing act of lese-majesty. Meanwhile, at Westminster, Theresa May squandered her majority. As a result, on both sides of the pond, there has been rejoicing on the left, and adjustments on the right. Donald Trump, who failed to win a majority of the popular vote in the presidential elections, now describes himself as a man under siege. As for May, she never possessed an electoral mandate for her initial climb to the top of the greasy pole. For all her hopes, she has not unambiguously secured one now. Both Republican power-brokers on the one hand and many of their Conservative counterparts on the other are busy investigating how and when they might drop these compromised leaders without also falling themselves. | 'Are you a boy or a girl'? Drag Queen Story Hour riles the right, but delights kids Posted: 13 Jun 2017 03:26 PM PDT Across the country drag queens are reading stories, and teaching tolerance, to kids – but the events have come under fire from some conservatives It was the Drag Queen Story Hour at the San Francisco public library and six-year-old James Mendenhall intended to get right to the bottom of things. "Are you a boy or a girl?" he asked the 6ft 2in story reader, who was wearing a maroon satin gown, a hot pink frock, silver high-heeled pumps and false eyelashes. The drag queen, who goes by the name Honey Mahogany, leaned her delicately-braided blond wig towards him and paused for effect. Continue reading... |

| I’m not German enough to become a citizen | Letters Posted: 13 Jun 2017 12:02 PM PDT Barbara Hanley has a German-Jewish grandfather but does not qualify for citizenship as she was born before patriarchal nationality laws were changed Like Amelia Hill ('I'm making my family German', 3 June), I have a German-Jewish grandfather who fled here after Kristallnacht. My mother married an Englishman and I was born in 1945. Imagine my dismay when, on applying for German citizenship, I was refused. This was because until 1953 nationality could only be conferred through the father; this patriarchal logic had existed from Bismarck through the Nazis to the early Federal Republic. Only from 1953 could the mother also confer nationality. My error was, then, twofold; I was born too early and my mother was the wrong sex. I cannot adequately express the anger that this gross unfairness has created in me.I would be interested in hearing from others with a similar experience. If enough come forward it may be possible to mount a collective challenge to this ruling. If the modern German state is to be taken seriously in its claims to have "come to terms with the past" (Vergangenheitsbewältigung), then it needs to right this wrong promptly. • Join the debate – email guardian.letters@theguardian.com Continue reading... |

| Mounir Mahjoubi, the 'geek' who saved Macron's campaign: 'We knew we were going to be attacked' Posted: 13 Jun 2017 08:00 AM PDT The youngest member of France's new government is a self-taught digital guru from a poor immigrant family. He talks about how his Arab name harmed his CV, working in a call centre and how he foiled the cyber attack that threatened En Marche's election hopes At a crowded market in the shadow of towerblocks in north-eastern Paris, shoppers gather to take selfies with a smiling, slightly shy, young man in a business suit. "Mounir! A photo with my granny!" shouts one young woman, pushing forward an old lady in north African dress for a hug. "My daughter needs work experience, what do you suggest?" asked a father from the 10th floor of a high-rise, proud of the first child in the family to go to university. Mounir Mahjoubi, 33, is the youngest member of France's new government and part of Emmanuel Macron's inner circle. He is the computer brains and digital campaigner whose online strategy helped the independent centrist Macron secure a decisive presidential election win in May, and who worked to stem a vast hacking attack that hit the final days of the campaign. He is now being held up as one of the faces of the "Macron landslide" – a newcomer to parliamentary politics well-placed to win a seat in the final round of National Assembly elections on Sunday, when the president's new centrist movement, La République En Marche, is on course to win one of the biggest majorities in the modern French state. | 'Nervous' Jeff Sessions' attempt at Trump-like bravado falls flat Posted: 13 Jun 2017 04:24 PM PDT Analysis: In his Senate testimony on Russia, the attorney general's default position was 'can't recall' and vagueness was the order of the day He started with a declaration well suited to old-school newspaper headlines, insisting that the claim he was involved in collusion with Russia was "an appalling and detestable lie". But Jeff Sessions' testimony on Capitol Hill on Tuesday will be better remembered for a moment geared to 21st-century memes. Peppered with questions by the California Democrat Kamala Harris, Sessions, the former senator from Alabama with a troubled civil rights record, said: "I'm not able to be rushed this fast.
