Republicans push federal 'heartbeat' bill in longshot bid to overturn Roe v Wade

A group of Republican congressmen urged support for what is believed to be the first federal "heartbeat" bill in the US on Tuesday, arguing that it would in effect "eliminate" abortion across the country.

Though the bill is unlikely to pass Congress, its introduction is an indicator of how emboldened far-right opponents of abortion feel now that a party hostile to reproductive rights has control of the three main branches of government in Washington.

Kaabil review – preposterous Hrithik Roshan melodrama stuck in Bollywood's past

Posted: 25 Jan 2017 02:00 AM PST

Sanjay Gupta's tale of a blind dubbing artist avenging the ghost of his wife is the sort of nonsense the Indian film industry stopped churning out 20 years ago

Set against the prospect of Shah Rukh Khan playing a mobster in this weekend's other major Hindi release, Raees, this teeth-grinding, mouth-foaming melodrama is destined to appear Bollywood trad, proceeding from the kind of innately preposterous premise a screenwriter might have tried to get away with 20 years ago. Here – no word of a lie – is the story of a blind dubbing artist (honey-eyed pin-up Hrithik Roshan) who embarks on a kill-crazy rampage after his equally sightless beloved is driven to self-sacrifice by well-connected thugs. It's not good, exactly, but I can't say it's not watchable on some far-out level.

Sanjay Gupta, the crime specialist who directed the Hindi redo of Reservoir Dogs (2002's Kaante), eventually embraces the full absurdity of this setup. Yes, our hero will use his voice-throwing skills to wrongfoot his nemeses, and yes, somebody points out how "an eye for an eye" might mean something else to the visually impaired. Elsewhere, Gupta is having an off day: a disastrous first act bottoms out with a beyond kitsch wedding night sequence ("I can't see, but I can feel"), and the sappiness trickles into the vendetta business, as dreamboat Roshan fumbles for wifey's ghost between slayings. Several punches land not with thuds but damp splats.

Syrian refugee children reduced to selling on Beirut streets to support families

With more than 90% of refugees in Lebanon short of food and facing cuts to aid, desperate families often rely on their children to boost income

Seven-year-old Salma Ismat* weaves between the bar stools trying to sell flowers to the crowds drinking cocktails and beer on Beirut's Armenia Street. When she's not scowling at the people who ignore her, the little Syrian girl tries to spell, out loud, the neon name of the bar. She does go to school, she says; this is just a part-time job.

"When refugees struggle to survive, they start to use negative coping mechanisms," says the World Food Programme's (WFP) communications officer, Edward Johnson. "They start relying more on their children, sending them to work."

Trotsky writes to the Manchester Guardian about the Moscow Trials - archive, 1937

Posted: 24 Jan 2017 09:00 PM PST

25 January 1937: In response to a request from the Manchester Guardian for a message on the present trial in Moscow Mr Leon Trotsky cables from Mexico

Editorial: A message from Trotsky
"Trotskyism" is, no doubt, a very mysterious subject, but even the most ardent defender of Stalin will hardly deny that those who bear its name must be considered authorities upon it. It is therefore of more than passing interest that on January 15 we published an article on the Russian trials by Trotsky's son and that to-day we publish a message from Mexico by Trotsky himself. Both deny absolutely the charges that they have plotted with the unfortunate prisoners in the present and previous State trials. It would, of course, be a simple answer to say that they are not speaking the truth, but, quite apart from its intrinsic likelihood, one may prefer to believe their evidence to the evidence of men whose lives may depend upon their words. Again, one may say that Trotsky's offer to defend himself and accuse Stalin before an impartial international court is fairly safe in view of the extreme improbability that his offer will be accepted; but there is no real reason to doubt that the offer is sincere, and it is certainly courageous. For where could Trotsky, who has been driven out of half the countries in Europe, find an impartial court? It is good to hear that Trotsky is at present writing a book in which his case will be fully stated; like Julius Caesar and Mr. Winston Churchill and other men of action whose brilliant pens have interpreted their own part in history, he will need no champion among posterity. But at this moment, as much for the sake of the Moscow prisoners as for his own, it is only right that his appeal for justice should be heard.

While I can't speak for Northern Ireland, I can as one who was born and grew up in East Germany, in saying that it is not a rosy-tinged Ostalgie that colours my feelings but a genuine sadness at the loss of a society in which social values and solidarity have been replaced by the imposition of a monetary ethos and an individualistic "elbow mentality".

The message from Syria summit: Russia wants a solution in its name | Martin Chulov

Posted: 24 Jan 2017 10:14 AM PST

A theme emerging from Astana is that Russia is prepared to do more than ever to negotiate an end to the conflict

Russia and Turkey had much on the line at the Astana peace talks, but at the end of the two-day summit on Syria, their returns were – at face value – modest. The gathering culminated in a predictable communique, endorsed by Iran, which aims to strengthen a nominal ceasefire in place since 30 December.

But other, more enduring, themes emerged from the gathering. First, Russia, one of the six-year war's main protagonists, is serious about negotiating an end to the conflict and is prepared to do more than ever to achieve that. Second, although the Assad regime is winning on the battlefield with the robust backing of Moscow and Iran, it has a relatively weak diplomatic hand.

Will New York get a Brexit boost to cancel out feared 'Trump slump'?

Posted: 24 Jan 2017 05:40 AM PST

While European cities led by Paris and Frankfurt wage campaigns for London's financial business, some experts predict New York could benefit most of all from the fallout of Brexit on the UK capital

New York and London function as two prongs of one global economy. Banks and other financial companies headquartered in New York usually have their second biggest offices in the British capital, and vice versa.

For years, that's made economic sense. For London-based companies, New York provides an unparalleled density of financial firms, a regulatory framework in which to do business, and access to non-European markets. London provides much of the same for New York-based companies who need access to European markets.
