Mexico must be ready to respond immediately with its own tax measures if the incoming administration of President-elect Donald Trump imposes a border tax, the country's economy minister has said, warning such protectionism may trigger a global recession.

Trump, who takes office on 20 January, has promised a "major border tax" on companies that shift jobs outside the United States, and such a measure could hobble Mexico's exports to its top trading partner.

Beer sales don't take a hit from marijuana legalisation, study finds

Research suggests cannabis legalisation linked to rise in drinking rather than users substituting Budweiser for bud-smoking

The legalisation of marijuana in several US states has not curbed beer sales, according to new research, as Americans managed to find room in their social schedules for both.

Analysts at investment firm Bernstein said fears that the brewing industry would be sent into chronic decline by red-eyed revellers reaching for joints instead of beers have proved unfounded.

The unprecedented decision by the daily Le Parisien came after months of discussion in the paper's newsroom following the UK's vote to leave the European Union and Donald Trump's election in the US – both of which caught media and some pollsters by surprise.

Russia looms large over Senate confirmation hearings | The daily briefing

Justice department scrutinizes FBI over Clinton email inquiry; WhatsApp backdoor allows snooping; and the San Diego Chargers prepare to move

Donald Trump's picks to lead the CIA and the Department of Defense both sounded warnings over Russia's growing global ambitions during their confirmation hearings before the Senate on Thursday. Mike Pompeo, Trump's choice for CIA director, sided with intelligence officials who accuse Moscow of attempting to skew the US election. His comments came amid an increasingly bitter row between Trump and US intelligence agencies. James Mattis, Trump's nominee for secretary of defense, told the Senate armed services committee that Russia had "chosen to be a strategic competitor, an adversary in key areas". Meanwhile, Eric Swalwell, the ranking member of the CIA subcommittee of the House permanent select committee on intelligence, has called for an independent bipartisan commission to investigate Russian influence on the US election. The commission was needed "to set the record straight on what happened, and to recommend how best to protect ourselves from now on", Swalwell writes for the Guardian. Trump's inauguration is next Friday, though some have already begun to wonder what happens now and to speculate as to whether he could be impeached.

‘The last five years have not been great at Greenpeace’

Posted: 14 Jan 2017 12:00 AM PST

With former Exxon CEO Rex Tillerson poised to lead US foreign policy, activists like Peter Willcox, skipper of the Rainbow Warrior, are needed more than ever. But are they losing their nerve?

Dawn was breaking when the campaigners used slingshots to fire ropes on to the rig. But as they began to scale the Prirazlomnaya, aiming to unfurl a banner denouncing Russia's attempts to drill for oil in the Arctic, their hopes of another successful Greenpeace "action" swiftly faded. They had been anticipating high-pressure hoses that sprayed freezing seawater at intruders. They weren't prepared for balaclava-wearing soldiers shooting at their inflatable boats.

One soldier grabbed the rope used by one of the climbers, slamming her body repeatedly against the rig. They captured two other activists. Then the Russians demanded to board the Greenpeace ship. But the Arctic Sunrise's captain, Peter Willcox, fearing his boat would be seized, resisted.

Dutchwoman resident in UK for 30 years may have to leave after Brexit

Jet Cooper and her husband, who has been diagnosed with a serious illness, asked their MP, Sarah Wollaston, to seek clarification from Goodwill about her right to remain in Britain after the EU referendum.

The couple were alarmed to discover, via two three-page letters from Goodwill, that Jet may not be eligible to remain in the country because she had not taken out private health insurance and because she may not have earned sufficient revenue in the years during which she freelanced.

From Deliciously Ella to Donald Trump: the evolution of 'truth'

Posted: 14 Jan 2017 01:00 AM PST

First there were facts. Then, post-truth. Now it's all about the bare-faced denial

Last weekend, because I am a masochist, I read an interview with Ella Mills, nee Woodward, aka Deliciously Ella, the figurehead of the clean-eating movement. I've been writing about the bread-phobic brigade for a few years now (like I said, I'm a masochist), and I check in with them occasionally to see how, exactly, they're stretching their glamorisation of disordered eating yet further. Yet on reading this latest dispatch, I had an unexpected epiphany: Deliciously Ella is the precursor to Donald Trump. A sylph-like, wildly privileged girl from west London looks a little less aspirational when you realise she's from the same mould as a race-baiting Oompa Loompa with a Weetabix (gluten!) on his head, doesn't she?

And it's not just Deliciously Ella. Like John Cusack in Being John Malkovich, I suddenly see the face of my man everywhere. I am finally realising that so many of the things that have frustrated me, that I have been trying to understand over the past year, come under one umbrella: the umbrella of bullshit.

Jakarta: the unlikely capital city of sex and swinging

Posted: 13 Jan 2017 01:00 PM PST

A little past midnight, sitting at the bar of a stylish Jakarta establishment, all around was giddy, shaking, unfiltered lust. Author Laksmi Pamuntjak discovers the swinging scene among Indonesia's middle class

There is a peculiar thrill to hearing your city described in terms less than conventional, more so when the talk is salacious, bordering on risqué. For all the respect you wish accorded to the weight of its history, the joy of its music, the singularity of its people and character – you also want it to speak for itself, ie to reveal itself with all its grey zones, its convolutions, the breadth of its unadvertised parts. Deep down there is a will for it to have a few tricks up its sleeves, to possess of certain quirks. You will it, for want of a better term, to have a secret subterranean world of sweet and shady dealings, just as the human psyche craves, seeks out, even needs its hidden life.

This was how I reacted when a friend declared, out of the blue, that Jakarta – capital city of the world's largest Muslim majority country – is "the capital city of sex". He is a businessman, notably reserved, sparing with words. Yet that evening, a little past midnight, sitting at the bar of one of the city's most stylish establishments, all around was giddy, shaking, unfiltered lust. I could see how even he couldn't look away. Through an accident of history, he became the reluctant observer par excellence of the city's collective sexual behaviour.

Standing in solidarity with Brazil’s Lula | Letters

Posted: 13 Jan 2017 10:55 AM PST

After the undemocratic removal of Dilma Rousseff as president of Brazil (Report, 24 December) via an illegitimate process that saw 62 senators overturn the votes of 54 million, there has been an unprecedented defamation campaign against former president Lula. This "trial by media" is an attempt to keep Lula from participating in the political process. As a highly popular figure as a result of reforms that lifted millions from poverty, Lula is considered a possible candidate in the 2018 elections. Investigating Lula, prosecutors have been unable to find any illegal activity committed. Despite this, they have submitted him to a number of arbitrary constraints and detainments, leading to a UN investigation taking place due to concern that his rights have been infringed. We, the undersigned, oppose this concerted campaign against Lula and stand in solidarity with those struggling for democracy and social progress in Brazil.

Plan to hand control of St Petersburg cathedral to church sparks outcry

Opponents fear restricted access and loss of funds for maintenance if St Isaac's Cathedral leaves state hands

More than 160,000 people have signed a petition against a decision to hand over the running of a popular tourist attraction in St Petersburg from the state to the Russian Orthodox church.

Built between 1818 and 1858, St Isaac's Cathedral was the most important cathedral in Russia until the Soviets stripped it of its religious trappings in the 1930s and installed an anti-religion museum inside. Regular worship resumed after the fall of communism, with space reserved inside for educational facilities, exhibitions and classical music concerts.
