Putin press conference: don't blame me for Democrats' election loss - live Posted: 23 Dec 2016 02:05 AM PST The Russian president is giving his annual presser with Russian and international journalists in Moscow. Join us to follow it live
That was Putin's most interesting answer so far. Putin said nothing about the allegation, made by US intelligence officials, that Kremlin hackers stole and published Democratic emails in order to help Trump. Here are what journalists are saying about Putin's comments on Trump: Trump "understood the mood of the people and kept going until the end, when nobody believed in him, except us," says Putin to more applause. Putin: Dems are "losing on every front and looking for people to blame everywhere. They need to learn to lose with dignity." Putin on Trump: "Right up to the end, nobody believed he would win, except us." *applause*
A question on international affairs. The world is undergoing a fundamental change. People are voting against the old ideas of political elites. There's been Brexit in 2016, the victory of Donald Trump. Have you discussed these changes? Is it true that 37% of Republican voters in the US like you? Are you the most influential man in the world? ... This is pretty fawning stuff. Continue reading... |
Look closer at nativity paintings – and see visions of apocalypse Posted: 23 Dec 2016 02:00 AM PST Christmas cards are full of cutesy depictions of nativity scenes, but Leonardo da Vinci, Botticelli and Caravaggio remind us of the death in Jesus's story Nativity scenes are the art we see at Christmas, often on cards that put a masterpiece on the mantelpiece. Baby it's cold outside, so let's warm our hearts with a bit of Piero della Francesca or Bruegel. Yet we close our eyes to the reality of this art. We turn Renaissance and baroque paintings into empty kitsch when we appropriate them as part of modern Christmas celebrations, which in truth have little in common with the much more religious world that created these images. Does the Berlin attack make the case for increased surveillance? Posted: 22 Dec 2016 07:24 AM PST In almost every terrorist attack since 9/11, those responsible were already on the radar of the intelligence agencies The German parliament passed without much fuss legislation in October that vastly expanded the surveillance powers of the country's intelligence agencies. Nowhere else in western Europe is the issue of protection of privacy felt as strongly as in Germany. Continue reading... |

A supreme court ruling could bring much needed change By the time Shrijith Ravindran arrived, a crowd had gathered around the injured man. Someone had moved his body to the side of the road, and witnesses had started taking photos and videos. But nobody was helping Dilip Khairnar, who by now, had blood pouring out of his ears. Ravindran, on his way home from the Malaka Spice restaurant where he works, pushed through the scrum to see what was happening. "He was in a horrible state. I asked the people there, 'Has someone called an ambulance?' They said, 'Yes, but he's been here for quite a while and the ambulance hasn't come yet'," Ravindran recalls, now six months after the incident. Ravindran knew time was running out. "I asked someone to help me put him in my car, and I drove him to the nearest hospital." |
