There is an unconfirmed report that one of the 12 people killed in the attack was shot and presumed to be a Polish passenger in the Truck. Arctic ice melt 'already affecting weather patterns where you live right now' Posted: 19 Dec 2016 06:57 AM PST Soaring Arctic temperatures 'strongly linked' to recent extreme weather events, say scientists at cutting edge of climate change research The dramatic melting of Arctic ice is already driving extreme weather that affects hundreds of millions of people across North America, Europe and Asia, leading climate scientists have told the Guardian. Severe "snowmageddon" winters are now strongly linked to soaring polar temperatures, say researchers, with deadly summer heatwaves and torrential floods also probably linked. The scientists now fear the Arctic meltdown has kickstarted abrupt changes in the planet's swirling atmosphere, bringing extreme weather in heavily populated areas to the boil. Continue reading... |

Building refugee camps reminds me why shelter is a basic human need Posted: 19 Dec 2016 11:41 PM PST The despair and misery I have seen in my work with the UN has made me realise my skills as a civil engineer have a direct impact on the survival of refugees I have always wanted to be a civil engineer. I wanted to build, to create structures that would serve the communities around me – roads, bridges, dams – the bigger the better. My journey with the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) started on 19 September 2001 in Sierra Leone. For me, it was an initiation into a surreal world where I decided which families could stop moving and restart their lives in a safe and secure home, and which families could not. Kennedy's first legislation – archive, 20 December 1960 Posted: 19 Dec 2016 09:00 PM PST 20 December 1960: What President-elect John Kennedy is planning to propose to Congress will be a test of his strategic guile New York, December 19. The two tasks must always go hand in hand in a country where the "Opposition" is no single party but a dominating coalition of like-minded men in both parties. The next session of Congress will test the President's strategic guile more than usual, because three of the four earliest bills he wants to bring up were strangled in the abortive emergency session of Congress called by Senator Johnson, then the Democratic leader, between the conventions and the election. ‘I was prosecuted for helping Syrian refugees’ | Lisbeth Zornig Andersen Posted: 19 Dec 2016 10:00 PM PST When I offered a lift to a Syrian refugee family trying to cross Denmark, I had no idea I would end up in court charged with people smuggling I didn't grow up in an orderly middle-class family with cosy Sunday lunches, people laughing and talking. I was brought up in a shabby cottage outside a remote Danish village, with cold water and a lavatory in the back garden. Hot dogs were a special treat on Sundays. My mum and stepdad were always drunk and didn't work – they lived off benefits. It was not the sort of environment that teaches you universal moral values and ethics. And yet, I learned, mostly from my three brothers, that people look after one another. We help each other. Even if we don't have much, even if we wear hand-me-downs to school and dig up potatoes for dinner, we still help each other. It's when life is tough and your back is to the wall that we matter the most to each other. Continue reading... |
