Former prime ministers François Fillon and Alain Juppé face second vote on 27 November, after Nicolas Sarkozy suffers humiliating rejection

Former French president Nicolas Sarkozy's political career has been effectively ended, after he was dealt a humiliating defeat on Sunday by his former prime minister François Fillon in the first round of the race to choose the rightwing Republican party's candidate for the presidency next spring.

Fillon, a socially conservative, free-market reformer who admires Margaret Thatcher and voted against same-sex marriage, came close to winning the nomination straight out, with around 43% of the poll.

Guardian Jakarta week – live

Posted: 21 Nov 2016 01:53 AM PST

The Guardian Cities team is live in the Indonesian capital to get under the skin of south-east Asia's greatest megacity. Follow us all day long, suggest thoughts and ideas – and get involved yourself!

Leading urbanist Marco Kusumawijaya of the city's Rujak Centre explains the key struggle for Jakartans: how to imagine the future of their city.

Unlike other megalopolises across the world, and in sharp contrast to the trend of global urbanisation, more people are actually leaving Jakarta than arriving. The city's net migration rate has been negative since at least 1990.

Imagining a future for this chaotic metropolis is very difficult for most people who live and work here. If they imagine anything, it's to detach their own future from the city.

As part of Guardian Jakarta Week, we have joined forces with Tempo, Indonesia's leading source for investigative journalism, on several special reports, as well as a live event this Wednesday entitled Indonesia and the Media.

Tempo has been and will always be about independent reporting and quality journalism. These are the qualities that we – as Jakartans and Indonesians – desperately need more and more in the media now, especially when we see there is no sign of abating corruption while sectarianism and intolerance are on the rise.

We want to remain the voice of reason in this city. That is why we are joyful to be invited to collaborate with the Guardian, and to discuss Indonesia and the international media [at the event on Wednesday 23 November]. Hopefully the forum will shed some lights on some of the concern people have about Indonesia's image abroad, and how journalists can do a better job in reporting the facts.

The government of near-bankrupt Libya faces the threat of a forced devaluation of the country's currency and an end to fuel subsidies, in a move that could spark a wave of popular anger and the fall of the teetering UN-backed administration in Tripoli.

The credibility of Fayez al-Serraj's government of national accord (GNA) is waning despite the support of the US, France, Italy and the UK, and its leadership has been unable to unite the country.

If Berlusconi is like Trump, what can Italy teach America?

Given that Italians were governed for nine years by a PM who has often been likened to the new president-elect, what can the US learn from them?

Among the world leaders who congratulated Donald Trump on his surprise election victory was the politician to whom the billionaire real estate mogul and reality television star has most often been compared: Silvio Berlusconi.

The rightwing former Italian prime minister and billionaire media mogul, who was dogged by claims that he used an underage prostitute at his infamous "bunga bunga" parties and counted Vladimir Putin as a close ally and friend, said the comparisons between the two were "obvious" and that Trump would rule with "authority and equilibrium".

Divisive and conquered, Sarkozy bows out of a race that has a long way to go

His extreme campaign, during which he took a ferociously hard line on topics such as national identity, will leave its mark on the rest of the presidential race

Nicolas Sarkozy, one of the most divisive figures in French politics, calmly took to the podium to accept defeat, vowing to spend less time on the "passions of public life" after France humiliatingly rejected his attempt to run again as the right's candidate for next year's presidential election.

His thwarted bid to reconquer the French presidency and avenge his 2012 defeat by the Socialist François Hollande had been driven by a lifelong addiction to elections and a conviction that he could read the public mood. He once said of politics that "you have to withdraw the needle slowly" but he never managed to kick the habit. Now, aged 62 and after 40 years in politics, he might have to finally bow out.

Zika: Let's give women the contraception they so desperately want

Posted: 20 Nov 2016 02:00 AM PST

Why aren't public health leaders using this crisis as an opportunity to transform women's lives?

As Zika continues to spread through the western hemisphere, the women's health aspect of the virus has not entered the public conversation. Perhaps more than the failure to control mosquito populations, lack of access to widespread, effective contraception is the root cause of microcephaly in most of Latin America and the Caribbean, and yet remains the least talked about aspect of the epidemic.

Ebola, like HIV before it, offered an impetus to improve general healthcare infrastructure in west Africa, as international money and political will joined the fight against the epidemic. For all its negatives, the Zika outbreak similarly provides an opportunity to press strongly for universal access to contraception and reproductive services for women in all Zika-affected countries, but this opportunity is being largely overlooked.

Jakarta's Rat Eradication Movement: public offered cash reward for live rats

Posted: 21 Nov 2016 12:59 AM PST

With Jakarta's rats getting ever bigger and more brazen, the deputy governor decided to offer $1.50 per live rodent. But history shows such schemes can have unintended consequences and offering the public a cash bounty could backfire

Samin climbed down into the darkness of the sewer, homemade catapult in hand. He wasn't using stones this time, concerned they might kill his prey. Instead he formed small balls from damp mud, just enough to stun the rats and get them into a rusty wire cage. The plan was to smoke them out. He threw a fistful of lit rags down the tunnel and waited.

That night, despite an evening thunder storm, the square outside Cakung district administrative office in East Jakarta was packed with street cleaners carrying an assortment of old birdcages and traps made from wire or discarded water dispenser bottles. A good haul for one afternoon – 650 live rats – many of them more than two feet long.

These sustainable development goals aim to end poverty and inequality, not only in faraway countries but also at home. The SDGs push for economic progress that should also meet high social and environmental standards. They aim for peace and prosperity everywhere, and they recognise how urgent the challenges are. World leaders have agreed to achieve these global goals by 2030.
