Donald Trump presidency a 'disaster for the planet', warn climate scientists Posted: 11 Nov 2016 05:13 AM PST Leading scientists say the climate denier's victory could mean 'game over for the climate' and any hope of warding off dangerous global warming The ripples from a new American president are far-reaching, but never before has the arrival of a White House administration placed the livability of Earth at stake. Beyond his bluster and crude taunts, Donald Trump's climate denialism could prove to be the lasting imprint of his unexpected presidency. "A Trump presidency might be game over for the climate," said Michael Mann, a prominent climate researcher. "It might make it impossible to stabilize planetary warming below dangerous levels." Privacy experts fear Donald Trump running global surveillance network Posted: 11 Nov 2016 09:34 AM PST Concerns raised that current US and UK surveillance system is 'ripe for further abuse under an autocratic, power-obsessed president' Privacy activists, human rights campaigners and former US security officials have expressed fears over the prospect of Donald Trump controlling the vast global US and UK surveillance network. They criticised Barack Obama's administration for being too complacent after the 2013 revelations by the NSA whistleblower, Edward Snowden, and making only modest concessions to privacy concerns rather than carrying out major legislative changes. Migrants share the stories that led them to London in BAC's intimate show Posted: 12 Nov 2016 12:00 AM PST Battersea Arts Centre is reprising its London Stories project and inviting audiences to meet a stranger and hear about why they journeyed to the capital Walk into the council chamber at Battersea Arts Centre in south London and it feels as if you have stumbled into a very strange art gallery or museum. Beautifully lit and displayed on white plinths are photographs and everyday objects, none of any monetary value, the oddest of which is probably a fake plastic leg. Museums display what is valued within a culture, but BAC's collection of objects are of personal importance only. It reminds us that a culture is made up of individual stories about who we are and how we understand ourselves and value each other. In 2013, BAC created London Stories, a series of intimate encounters between audiences and ordinary Londoners who told us about their lives. The process helped us to connect with a stranger. Part of its joy was that it showed how liberating it can be to tell a story – and how the listener can be changed, too, just as in Clare Patey's London international festival of theatre project A Mile in My Shoes. US aid for women’s sexual health worldwide under threat Posted: 11 Nov 2016 11:00 PM PST Under Trump, campaigners say, $600m in aid could be 'cut drastically', costing maternal lives, as they predict return to anti-abortion stance on health funding Hundreds of millions of dollars in US aid that helps prevent child and maternal deaths and reduces unintended pregnancies worldwide could be at risk under a Donald Trump administration, campaigners and thinktanks have warned. Citing "worrisome" indicators, such as Trump's U-turn against abortion, his pledge to appoint pro-life justices to the Supreme Court and his choice of Mike Pence, an anti-abortion activist, as vice-presidential running mate, they fear a reversal in aid commitments that have seen gains in reproductive health and gender equality. 'Macho v macho': what to expect from Putin-Trump negotiations Posted: 11 Nov 2016 11:00 PM PST Russians and Americans share hopes and fears about the future relationship between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin Picture the scene: it is March 2017 and President Donald Trump emerges from the White House with Russia's Vladimir Putin after several hours of talks. The body language is good; they slap each other on the back and cackle with laughter. Russia, Trump tells the gathered media, is a valued partner in the fight against Islamic State and a key strategic partner. For President Putin, this kind of man-to-man deal making, free of moralising on democracy or human rights, leaving him a free hand in his "near abroad" of Ukraine and other former Soviet states, is what he had always hoped for in relations with his US counterparts. Until now, it had seemed an impossible dream. Continue reading... |
‘The nationalism is scary’: French readers on the Paris attacks anniversary Posted: 11 Nov 2016 11:00 PM PST 7 readers in France reflect on the mood in the country one year on from the Bataclan attacks On my way home today I walked passed a patrol of armed soldiers, and I was suddenly surprised by how normal that has become to me. Looking at Leonard Cohen's darkness misses the warmth of his words Posted: 11 Nov 2016 07:00 AM PST When you listen to the lyrics Cohen wrote, you realise how alive his language is – and how much he was seeking the light
Eighty-two seems too soon an age to take a man like Leonard Cohen. In truth I'm not sure that I believed he would ever be taken at all, rather that he might somehow gently ossify, assume the contours of the landscape, and be still. I don't know who it was who first called Cohen "the Godfather of Gloom", nor even "the High Priest of Pathos"; certainly it was easy to cast him as a miserablist, for the half-listener to fall for the droop of the voice and the forlorn flamenco grounding of his music and see only the dirge and the dark. But this would be to miss entirely the warmth of his words. Continue reading... |

But local people are taking on the challenge to protect this unique region Inside a small aircraft, decorated with a polka-dot jaguar design, Ângelo Rabelo checks data on a small laptop computer. "We're approaching a river spring!" he shouts over the plane's noisy engine. Below, the Paraguay river in Brazil's Mato Grosso state snakes between clusters of vibrant green forest and extensive patches of farmland. The plane flies over a large, barren-looking stretch of light brown land where soy is being grown. A small buffer zone of trees separates the crops from the river, in which lies a pulsating spring. Inside the mind of Donald Trump Posted: 11 Nov 2016 04:05 PM PST Gwenda Blair spent years researching her biography of Donald Trump – and knows what makes him tick. Here she lists the personal details - his voice, language, confidence – that helped win over America Observers cite voter anger at an entitled political establishment and an ever-wealthier and privileged elite; gridlock and dysfunction in Washington; international tensions; and economic dislocation and distress to explain his victories in the primaries and now in the general election. They're not wrong. Over the course of the campaign, Trump threw fuel on all these hotspots. Still more critical to his success, he nailed the white male support that would put him over the top in electoral votes on by his continual attacks on the legitimacy of the nation's first African-American president, his targeting and denunciation of undocumented immigrants and Muslims, and his overtly sexist remarks about women. As pretty much everyone has observed by now, Donald Trump, the UK's pro-Brexit campaign and Australia's own Pauline Hanson are all backed by broadly similar folk, voters who feel like human collateral damage in the "new" global economy and who are searching for both hope and scapegoats. He has also instigated hatred against people of all colours except white, and that includes black, brown, red, yellow and purple. Continue reading... |
