Member states drawing up strategy to hit vessels used by human traffickers for dash across Mediterranean as Brussels pushes for EU-wide refugee deal

The European Union has drawn up plans that could involve military attacks in Libya to try to curb the influx of migrants across the Mediterranean by targeting the trafficking networks. It is to launch a bid on Monday to secure a UN mandate for armed action in Libya's territorial waters.

Britain was drafting a UN security council resolution to mandate the mission, said senior officials in Brussels, which would fall under Italian command, have the participation of around 10 EU countries and could also drag the Nato alliance in.

Kenan Evren, the general who led Turkey's 1980 military coup that ended years of street clashes between rival left- and right-wing militias but also unleashed a wave of arrests, torture and extrajudicial killings, died on Saturday. He was 97.

Evren, who later ruled as president for seven years, died at Ankara's GATA military hospital, the state-run Anadolu agency reported, hours after he was placed on a respirator because of multiple organ failure and his family and lawyers were called to his side.

Greek leader faces revolt by party hardliners as debt showdown looms

Posted: 09 May 2015 04:01 PM PDT

Alexis Tsipras's bid to delay a €750m loan repayment may fail, prompting a struggle with those who voted for him

The epic struggle to keep Greece solvent and in the eurozone intensified on Saturday night amid signs of a looming crisis within the anti-austerity government that took Europe ablaze barely three months ago.

As prime minister Alexis Tsipras scrambles to secure a financial lifeline to keep the debt-stricken country afloat, hardliners in his radical left Syriza party have also ratcheted up the pressure. In a make-or-break week of debt repayments, the politician once seen as the harbinger of Europe's anti-establishment movement has found himself where no other leader would want to be: caught between exasperated creditors abroad and enraged diehards at home.

MEPs’ debate on animal research ban worries scientists

Posted: 09 May 2015 03:34 PM PDT

European parliament to discuss scrapping of all animal research in response to citizens' initiative petition signed by 1.2 million people

The European parliament will on Monday debate a call – backed by a petition signed by 1.2 million people – to scrap animal research in the EU. The proposal has alarmed scientists, who worked for six years to set up the 2010 European directive that controls animal experimentation and welfare in the EU.

Researchers fear that the petition, which was drawn up by the Italian-based Stop Vivisection European citizens' initiative, could sway many newly elected MEPs who would then press the European commission into scrapping the directive which, in the UK, is enshrined in an amendment to the 1986 Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act.
