China funnels its overseas aid money into political leaders’ home provinces Posted: 29 May 2022 03:00 AM PDT Schools and airports help the leaders of countries that receive cash from Beijing tighten their grip on power, a new book claims China's financing of overseas projects has disproportionately benefited the core political supporters of incumbent presidents or prime ministers of those countries that receive the funds, according to a new book. During the 20th century, China was mostly known as a recipient of international development finance. Its overseas development programme was modest – roughly on a par with that of Denmark. But over the course of one generation, as Beijing emerged as the world's second-largest economy, its footprint began to extend far beyond its borders – often in the form of infrastructure initiatives such as Belt and Road. ‘Our friends didn’t die in vain’: Sudan’s activists aim to topple military regime Posted: 28 May 2022 06:00 AM PDT Three years after protests toppled Omar al-Bashir, activists hope to bring down another government with little more than phones, placards and motorbikes A small house on a street in central Khartoum, lost among the dusty blocks of offices and cheap hotels but not difficult to find. On the wall outside, a slightly faded portrait of the smiling young man who once lived here: Abdulsalam Kisha. Inside, half a dozen men and a woman are meeting, planning, eating, joking. These self-styled "revolutionaries" do not belong to a political party, or even a defined organisation. Instead, they are part of a coalition of hundreds of grassroots associations across Sudan's towns and cities coordinated by activists who hope to bring down a powerful military regime with little more than placards, smartphones and motorbikes. The efforts of these "resistance committees" in Sudan are being watched – with hope by many, anxiety by autocratic leaders – across a swathe of the Middle East and Africa. Continue reading... |

Tory MP John Stevenson submits letter of no confidence in Boris Johnson – UK politics live Posted: 31 May 2022 05:55 AM PDT Latest updates: Carlisle MP is latest to say Partygate fallout needs vote on PM's future; Andrea Leadsom condemns 'unacceptable failings of leadership' Bob Neill, Conservative chairman of the justice select committee, spoke of Sue Gray's "very, very strong condemnation of a failure in leadership both on the civil service side and on the political side". The MP for Bromley and Chislehurst told Times Radio: Now I'm surprised frankly that some senior civil servants in Downing Street are still in post after what was found, but ultimately the political leadership, I'm afraid, stops with the prime minister and the accountability to the public stops with the prime minister. That requires, I think, a fresh momentum and it requires real drive and I don't think that the situation that unfortunately has happened in No 10 leaves the prime minister able to take that initiative. In the long term, charisma, which the prime minister has, and energy, which he's shown, isn't always enough. There has I think also to be a sense of seriousness of purpose and of responsibility and I think the British people are going to expect that, particularly as we are facing some very tough times over the next couple of years. To do that I think we have to get the tone right and optimism has its place, but also seriousness and self discipline and restraint has its place too. Continue reading... |

Biden says pain ‘palpable’ in Uvalde | First Thing Posted: 31 May 2022 03:08 AM PDT First memorial services for victims begin as president says he will continue to push for gun control. Plus 20 years of Avril Lavigne Good morning. The first memorial services for the 19 children and two teachers killed in a mass shooting at their elementary school in Uvalde began on Monday, a day after Joe Biden visited the small south Texas city and was urged by residents to take action on gun safety laws. What's happening in Canada? The mass shooting in Texas has fed concern about gun violence worldwide and Canada's government is to legislate for a national freeze on handgun ownership that would prevent people buying and selling them anywhere in the country. Why has Andy Murray spoken up about gun law in the US? Britain's two-time Wimbledon champion Andy Murray has said the mass shooting in Uvalde made him "angry" and that a survivor's account of the incident was similar to his own experience in the 1996 Dunblane massacre in Scotland. What else do we know about what happened? Here's a timeline of how the school shooting unfolded. What has Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said? "On the day of a mass shooting and weeks after news of Roe, Democratic party leadership rallied for a pro-NRA, anti-choice incumbent under investigation in a close primary. Robocalls, fundraisers, all of it," she said. "Accountability isn't partisan. This was an utter failure of leadership." Continue reading... |

An unprecedented leaked supreme court draft decision showed a conservative majority of the nine justices are open to reversing Roe v Wade entirely. If that happened, 26 states would be certain or likely to ban abortion, including in Texas. The state has a "trigger" ban that would almost immediately ban abortion. Continue reading... |
