The 76-year-old former leader, jailed on corruption charges in 2018, is ready to run again and is ahead of incumbent Jair Bolsonaro in the polls

For weeks Hilton Acioli wrestled with the melodies and lyrics that would become the theme tune to one of the most remarkable political careers in recent history.

Finally, one morning in the winter of 1989, something clicked. "Lula lá – a star is sparkling. Lula lá – the flourishing of hope," the Cat Stevens-loving Brazilian songsmith sang as he sat before his computer with a guitar.

Australia politics live updates: Labor campaign launch under way in Perth; Morrison speaks at Sydney rally

Posted: 30 Apr 2022 08:45 PM PDT

Labor leaders speak at ALP campaign launch in Perth; Scott Morrison speaks at Sydney rally; Coalition outlines e-safety plan; Greens announce LGBTQ+ equality plan; Victoria reports seven Covid deaths; NSW reports five. Follow all the day's news live

Simon Birmingham is pushed on what the Coalition will actually do on the cost of living but there isn't a clear answer. See this exchange with Insiders host David Speers:

Q: So essentially to get wages going is to keep doing what you've been doing for the last nine years?

David, our plan is a comprehensive economic plan and in contrast to the Labor party. We have outlined clearly plans for … that jobs growth. Jobs growth fuelled by lower taxes and tax relief for Australians that continue to be implemented in terms of lower income taxes, support for more businesses.

David, it is a plan that we've outlined in quite a lot of detail, compared to ...

If you look at this year's budget, small business, a particular focus in relation to investment in technology …

The approach we've taken is to fix a particular problem in the housing market and that was the fact that you had to save, of course, for your deposit, takes months and months, years and years, to get that 20% deposit to avoid having to pay mortgage insurance, that was meaning that people were having to pay rent at the same time as saving.

LNP preferences could be ‘deciding factor’ for One Nation in Queensland

Posted: 30 Apr 2022 01:00 PM PDT

Opponents say preference decision is a strategic move that could alienate moderate voters within the party

The Liberal National party's decision to direct Queensland voters to place One Nation second on their Senate ballots could be "the deciding factor" that sees Pauline Hanson re-elected, experts say.

It is a strategic move which political opponents have seized on as one which could alienate moderate voters within the party and see a backlash against Liberals in marginal seats.

Posted: 30 Apr 2022 01:00 PM PDT

The major parties have turned to internet jokes as they fight for attention, but some experts think it's a big waste of time

You wouldn't normally expect political parties to prioritise messages about The Simpsons, SpongeBob SquarePants and Judge Judy in the midst of an election campaign. But as Scott Morrison and Anthony Albanese duke it out on debate stages with their competing visions for Australia, there's a battle of a different kind happening online; a battle for attention, eyeballs and shares.

A fascinating meme war is being waged, and it might be more important than you think.

Analysis: regional rivals reconcile in Jeddah while reason for three-year rift remains elephant in the room

With awkward embraces and fixed grins, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Mohammed bin Salman struck a pose of reconciliation. For the past three years, the presence of the Turkish leader and the Saudi crown prince in the same room would have been unthinkable, but in a drawing room of a Jeddah palace on Friday, both tried to signal a new beginning.

There was no sign of the acrimony that had set the regional rivals apart and – most definitely – no mention of the reason for the rift: the Saudi murder of Jamal Khashoggi.

Prime minister had broached issue of asymptomatic transmission publicly with advisers long before testing rules were introduced

Boris Johnson's claim that a lack of knowledge about the asymptomatic transmission of Covid-19 put care homes at risk has been further undermined after it emerged he openly discussed the potential scale of symptom-free transmission.

The prime minister has already been accused of misleading parliament over the claim. He made it last week after the high court ruled that the government had acted unlawfully in ordering the discharge of patients to care homes without testing in the spring of 2020. The shadow education secretary, Bridget Phillipson, has said ministers should not micromanage the books pupils read in classrooms.

Speaking to the NAHT school leaders' annual conference in Telford, she said there was an "irony" that the government is seeking to take politics out of the classroom but simultaneously telling teachers what books to teach.

I think we need a school curriculum that inspires and supports every young person... I think children should expect to see their lives, their communities, their experiences reflected in that,

I think it is not for secretaries of state to dictate which books should or shouldn't be taught within a school. I think you all have expertise and professionalism that allows you to deliver that.
