Climate crisis: greenhouse gas levels hit new record, UN reports Posted: 25 Oct 2021 02:00 AM PDT The data send a 'stark' message to the nations tasked with increasing action at the Cop26 climate summit, UN meteorology chief says Levels of climate-heating gases in the atmosphere hit record levels in 2020, despite coronavirus-related lockdowns, the UN's World Meteorological Organization has announced. The concentration of carbon dioxide, the most important greenhouse gas, is now 50% higher than before the Industrial Revolution sparked the mass burning of fossil fuels. Methane levels have more than doubled since 1750. All key greenhouse gases (GHG) rose faster in 2020 than the average for the previous decade and this trend has continued in 2021, the WMO report found. Continue reading... |
Japan royal wedding: subdued ritual looms as Princess Mako marries amid controversy Posted: 24 Oct 2021 05:43 PM PDT Princess's union to Kei Komuro has attracted public and media attention for all the wrong reasons It is perhaps fitting that the weather forecast is for cloud and drizzle in Tokyo on Tuesday, when Princess Mako – the eldest niece of Japan's emperor – will marry her college sweetheart in a subdued ritual marred by years of criticism of their relationship. Despite the imperial backdrop – and a public craving for distraction after 18 months of the coronavirus pandemic – their nuptials will involve lots of paperwork and rather less festivity. Rust assistant director who gave Alec Baldwin gun ‘was subject of 2019 safety complaint’ Posted: 24 Oct 2021 07:45 PM PDT Prop maker Maggie Goll says she raised complaints about Dave Halls in TV series Into the Dark but that issue is 'in no way one person's fault' A crew member disclosed that she had raised safety concerns in the past about the assistant director whom authorities say unwittingly handed actor Alec Baldwin the prop gun that killed a cinematographer on a film set in New Mexico last week. Maggie Goll, a prop maker and licensed pyrotechnician, said she filed an internal complaint with the executive producers of Hulu's Into the Dark TV series in 2019 over concerns about assistant director Dave Halls' conduct on set. In an interview on US television, Saad Aljabri, who fled Saudi Arabia in May 2017 and is living in exile in Canada, also said he had been warned by an associate in 2018, after the murder of the journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, that a Saudi hit team was heading to Canada to kill him. Posted: 25 Oct 2021 03:04 AM PDT Daily Russian deaths also at near record level as non-working firebreak week looms; protests in Sofia continue over green certificate scheme
Just back on those school anti-vaccine protests for a moment, my colleague Sarah Marsh has this report: Keir Starmer calls for schools to be protected from anti-vaccine protests The Association of School and College Leaders (ASCL) revealed this month that most of the schools surveyed by the union (79%) had been targeted by anti-vaxxers. This had mainly been through emails threatening legal action, but the ASCL said in some cases staff had been threatened with physical harm and some protesters have gained access to school sites. |
Worst of US pandemic likely behind us but we can’t drop our guard, experts say Posted: 24 Oct 2021 11:00 PM PDT Vaccines and new antiviral drugs cause for optimism as deaths and cases fall but Americans urged to be careful amid variant threat The number of new Covid cases and deaths in the United States has been in a steady decline since early September, prompting many infectious disease experts to conclude that the worst impacts of the pandemic in America are probably in the past. But in the same breath, those experts also caution that it's not yet safe to abandon safeguards against the virus. That's because parts of the US population and much of the world remain unvaccinated, which could allow for outbreaks and dangerous new variants of the virus to emerge. Continue reading... |

French election polls: who is leading the race to be the next president of France? Posted: 25 Oct 2021 02:31 AM PDT Emmanuel Macron and the far-right hopeful Marine Le Pen look set to be joined by numerous other candidates in the French presidential election. We look at the latest polling, and introduce some of the most likely candidates France will vote to elect a new president in April, and the jostling for position among potential candidates is well under way. The current president, Emmanuel Macron, has yet to declare his candidacy but is expected to run again. His second-round opponent from 2017, the far-right populist Marine Le Pen, has already launched her campaign. Alongside them on the ballot will be Anne Hidalgo, the Socialist candidate, Yannick Jadot, representing the Green movement, and a candidate from the centre-right, to be chosen by Les Républicains, on 4 December. The far-right TV pundit Éric Zemmour, who has no political party, could declare an outsider bid. Continue reading... |

Posted: 25 Oct 2021 03:00 AM PDT Does your internal monologue play out on a television, in an attic, as a bickering Italian couple – or is it entirely, blissfully silent? Claudia*, a sailor from Lichfield in her late 30s, is not Italian. She has never been to Italy. She has no Italian family or friends. And she has no idea why a belligerent Italian couple have taken over her inner voice, duking it out in Claudia's brain while she sits back and listens. "I have no idea where this has come from," says Claudia, apologetically. "It's probably offensive to Italians." The couple are like the family in the Dolmio pasta sauce adverts: flamboyant, portly, prone to waving their hands and shouting. If Claudia has a big decision to make in her life, the Italians take over. Continue reading... |
Death, addiction, grace: a year as chaplain in New York’s toughest hospital Posted: 25 Oct 2021 03:00 AM PDT While training as a chaplain and caring for society's most vulnerable, I learned that spiritual care is an act of social justice The patient, who I'll call RL, was homeless and came into Bellevue's psychiatric ward experiencing hallucinations. His struggle with severe mental illness was similar to many of the other homeless people I saw on my daily commute through New York. It was July 2020, and I had just started my year as a chaplain-in-training on the ward. Already, I was struggling to help him. He couldn't hold a conversation, slept most of the day, and whenever awake, would stare blankly at the television in the activity room and talk to himself. Yet occasionally, when I spoke to him, his eyes would light up and I'd catch him in a moment of clarity. We'd talk for a minute about barbecue or baseball, two subjects I knew he liked, before the light clicked off and he walked away. Continue reading... |
Life after loneliness: ‘University was bleak; then I found confidence’ Posted: 25 Oct 2021 03:00 AM PDT One day, after staring at an academic paper for three hours and writing nothing, I went to an employment adviser. He sent me off in a whole new direction I expected to enjoy university, and when I didn't I was knocked sideways. I should have done: I was academic, I loved knowing things and equally, I had always thought I was gregarious, and liked having fun. I didn't think I was bad at making friends either. And indeed, I quickly found a small group of people I got on with. Yet despite all this, somehow I was plunged into a kind of despair I hadn't experienced before – and haven't been through since. I couldn't work it out then, and I can only speculate on it now. I suspect a lot of people thought it was all because of my blindness, but that's because if you have a disability, people like to attribute anything that goes wrong for you to that. In truth, I don't think it had much, if anything, to do with it. One possible explanation was the sheer size of the change in my circumstances. I had gone from an unusual, small and residential school, with just over 70 pupils, to a large, sprawling complex of colleges with about 10,000 students and staff. Everywhere you went was full of noise and bustle, and as everybody knows, you are nowhere more alone than in a crowd. Continue reading... |

Herbalist’s murder highlights assault on Mayan spirituality in Guatemala Posted: 25 Oct 2021 02:45 AM PDT Spiritual guide Domingo Choc Che was tortured and burned by neighbors who accused him of witchcraft – and advocates say Christian churches are stoking prejudice In meetings, Domingo Choc Che was quiet and reflective, speaking up only once others had said their piece. But he would come alive when he entered the jungles of Guatemala's northern Petén department, sharing his knowledge of traditional medicines with anyone who wanted to learn. "He was more at ease with plants," said Mónica Berger, a sociologist and anthropologist at the University of the Valley of Guatemala who worked closely with Choc Che, a member of the indigenous Maya Q'eqchi community. Labor accuses Nationals of trading opposition to net zero for extra cabinet position Posted: 25 Oct 2021 01:19 AM PDT Barnaby Joyce says 'decision is settled' as resources minister Keith Pitt – who opposed 2050 target – is promoted within Coalition cabinet The federal Nationals leader, Barnaby Joyce, has said he supports the "process" that led the party to back a net zero emissions target even as he came under fire for opposing the climate policy backed by a majority in the party room. Joyce on Monday insisted his opposition to the target was irrelevant given the final decision reflected the will of the party room. The Nationals secured an extra cabinet position as part of the Coalition deal, with the resources minister, Keith Pitt – who also opposed the mid-century target – reelevated. Continue reading... |
Failed state? Why Nigeria’s fragile democracy is facing an uncertain future Posted: 24 Oct 2021 10:01 PM PDT In the first in a series on Africa's most populous state, we look at the effects of widening violence, poverty, crime and corruption as elections approach A series of overlapping security, political and economic crises has left Nigeria facing its worst instability since the end of the Biafran war in 1970. With experts warning that large parts of the country are in effect becoming ungovernable, fears that the conflicts in Africa's most populous state were bleeding over its borders were underlined last week by claims that armed Igbo secessionists in the country's south-east were now cooperating with militants fighting for an independent state in the anglophone region of neighbouring Cameroon. ‘It still gives me nightmares’: the firefighters on the frontline as the world burns Posted: 24 Oct 2021 07:00 AM PDT As global heating sees a surge in wildfires, we hear from those tackling the blazes, who face injury, death and trauma, often without proper equipment or support
In Greece, fires take up a lot of resources. There isn't enough money to recruit the number of [firefighters] needed or to buy the necessary equipment. Volunteers plug the gaps. Continue reading... |
Current approach to wildfires risks lives and wastes money, say experts Posted: 24 Oct 2021 07:00 AM PDT Researchers call for new firefighting techniques that focus on managing landscapes, as global heating sees increase in blazes
A new approach is urgently needed to tackle global wildfires as current methods are no longer working, draining the public purse and placing lives at risk, according to experts. This summer saw some of the worst wildfires in history and underscored the destructive impacts of global heating. As Cop26 approaches and is expected to shine a light on the importance of protecting ecosystems and building defences to avoid loss of homes and lives, experts say a lack of foresight and funding worldwide means harmful wildfires will continue to rage, putting communities and firefighters in danger.
