Posted: 11 Sep 2021 08:17 PM PDT

Ceremony marks formal beginning of Taliban rule in Afghanistan following chaotic US withdrawal

The Taliban raised their flag over the Afghan presidential palace on the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, as news emerged that the regime's fighters had killed the brother of the country's former vice-president at a checkpoint in Panjshir province.

Rohullah Azizi, the brother of former vice-president and anti-Taliban resistance leader Amrullah Saleh, was travelling in his car on Thursday when he and his driver were shot dead at a Taliban checkpoint, his nephew said on Saturday.

FBI document holds no evidence Saudi government was involved in 9/11

Posted: 11 Sep 2021 09:06 PM PDT

Newly released file relates to logistical support provided to two of the Saudi hijackers before the 2001 attacks

The FBI has released a newly declassified 16-page document related to logistical support provided to two of the Saudi hijackers in the lead-up to the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The document describes contacts the hijackers had with Saudi associates in the US but offers no evidence the Saudi government was complicit in the plot.

The document, released on the 20th anniversary of the attacks, is the first investigative record to be disclosed since President Joe Biden ordered a declassification review of materials that for years have remained out of public view.

Emma Raducanu: British 18-year-old makes tennis history with US Open final win

Posted: 12 Sep 2021 12:57 AM PDT

  • 18-year-old Briton beats Leylah Fernandez 6-4, 6-3
  • Victor came through qualifying and did not lose a set

There are so many basic milestones that Emma Raducanu has not yet recorded in a professional tennis career that only began in full three months ago. She has never been a direct entrant to a grand slam main draw, she is yet to play a tour-level three set match and she has not even won a match at a WTA tour event.

Yet sometimes a special player comes along and renders convention irrelevant. After three weeks and one of the most astonishing breakout runs in living memory, Raducanu marked herself as a grand slam champion for ever. She ended the US Open where she started it: fearlessly dominating from inside the baseline as she defeated Leylah Annie Fernandez 6-4, 6-3 in a match of the highest intensity to win the title without dropping a set.

‘The harm to children is irreparable’: Ruth Etzel speaks out ahead of EPA whistleblower hearing

Posted: 11 Sep 2021 10:13 PM PDT

The former EPA scientist is among five who have come forward alleging that the agency has become deeply corrupted

The US Environmental Protection Agency is failing to protect children by ignoring poisons in the environment and focusing on corporate interests, according to a top children's health official who will testify this week that the agency tried to silence her because of her insistence on stronger preventions against lead poisoning.

"The people of the United States expect the EPA to protect the health of their children, but the EPA is more concerned with protecting the interests of polluting industries," said Ruth Etzel, former director of the EPA's Office of Children's Health Protection (OCHP). The harm being done to children is "irreparable", she said.

The Scandinavian country faces a crisis of conscience on the eve of elections

Norway goes to the polls on Monday in parliamentary elections that are forcing western Europe's largest oil and gas producer to confront its environmental contradictions.

Climate issues have dominated the campaigning since August, when the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change published its starkest warning yet that global heating is dangerously close to spiralling out of control.

Apple still reliant on one core product as it nudges $3tn hurdle

Posted: 11 Sep 2021 04:05 PM PDT

The iPhone maker may be set to break market records, but it's starting to look more and more like a one-gadget pony

If Apple is to become the world's first three-trillion-dollar company, the iPhone will play a key role in that feat. The tech firm unveils the latest iteration of its signature product on Tuesday, and the success of the iPhone 13 will determine how quickly Apple goes from its current market capitalisation of just under $2.5tn (£1.8tn) to $3tn.

"We believe Apple is on a trajectory to hit $3tn by early 2022 and the iPhone 13 will be a lynchpin of growth," says Dan Ives of investment firm Wedbush Securities.

Book reveals how the jazz musician unwittingly became party to secret cold war manoeuvres by the US in Africa

It was a memorable evening: Louis Armstrong, his wife and a diplomat from the US embassy were out for dinner in a restaurant in what was still Léopoldville, capital of the newly independent Congo.

The trumpeter, singer and band leader, nicknamed Satchmo as a child, was in the middle of a tour of Africa that would stretch over months, organised and sponsored by the State Department in a bid to improve the image of the US in dozens of countries which had just won freedom from colonial regimes.

Latest updates: Follow all our coverage of the Covid-19 pandemic from the UK and around the world

On the subject of PCR tests for travel, Javid said he wanted to get rid of them "as soon as I possibly can".

He told Sky News's Trevor Phillips On Sunday:

I'm not going to make that decision right now, but I've already asked the officials that the moment we can, let's get rid of these kinds of intrusions.

The cost that generates for families, particularly families just trying to go out and holiday, you know we shouldn't be keeping anything like that in place for a second longer than is absolutely necessary.

Javid also said he expects the booster vaccination programme for Covid-19 to start this month.

He told Sky News:

There is evidence of waning immunity, particularly in older people, more vulnerable people. And we are already taking action on that.

So for example just a week ago I announced that those people that are immuno-suppressed that they should get a third jab as part of their primary treatment. That has already started.

Is it ethical to travel right now? Experts on flying in the age of Delta

Posted: 12 Sep 2021 12:00 AM PDT

Questions to consider before you inflict the 'moral injury' of a risky, nonessential trip

A new season is here and, with it, seedlings of holiday escape plans to some sun-drenched beach or snowy mountain ski slope. In view of passenger data from the US and the UK, air travel is on its way toward recovering from the slump of a pre-vaccine Covid-19 pandemic – despite the rise of the Delta variant.

But does that mean it's a good idea to buy that plane ticket, even if you're vaccinated? And if you're comfortable assuming some degree of personal risk, is it unethical to do so?

On 30 June 2020, Victoria's Covid cases were doubling. Within a week the state would be in its second lockdown.

That same day Pfizer wrote to the federal health minister, Greg Hunt, with a clear sense of urgency, wanting to discuss a vaccination deal.

Lashana Lynch, the first female 007: ‘I never had a plan B’

Posted: 12 Sep 2021 12:00 AM PDT

Lashana Lynch, star of the new Bond movie, on ninja training, doing her own stunts and why now's the time for an agent who's a 'real woman'

Lashana Lynch knew she was on a very short shortlist. She had taped a couple of auditions for Barbara Broccoli, the producer of the James Bond films since 1995. She met and read with Daniel Craig, who would be making his fifth and final appearance in No Time To Die, the 25th 007 adventure, a new release that you may have caught wind of by now. Then, finally, there was the stunt test, overseen by the Bond stunt and armoury teams (yes those are actual departments).

Is that like circuit training? "Deeper than that," Lynch replies. "They hand you a bunch of weapons and they teach you a routine for a few seconds or a minute and then you basically have to copy the routine. So it was like, 'OK, grab the gun! Shoot! Get down on your knees! Shoot! Roll on your back! Land on your feet! Shoot! Run, run, run! You've run out of ammo! Throw that away! Assemble this gun! Shoot!' And that was the first out of five routines they taught me."

Kathryn Paige Harden: ‘Studies have found genetic variants that correlate with going further in school’

Posted: 11 Sep 2021 09:30 PM PDT

The behaviour geneticist explains how biology could have an influence on academic attainment – and why she takes an anti-eugenics approach

Kathryn Paige Harden argues how far we go in formal education – and the huge knock-on effects that has on our income, employment and health – is in part down to our genes. Harden is a professor of psychology at the University of Texas at Austin, where she leads a lab using genetic methods to study the roots of social inequality. Her provocative new book is The Genetic Lottery: Why DNA Matters for Social Equality.

To even talk about whether there might be a genetic element to educational attainment and social inequality breaks a huge social taboo – particularly on the political left, which is where you say your own sympathies lie. The spectre of eugenics looms large, and no one wants to create a honeypot for racists and classists. To be clear, it is scientifically baseless to make any claims about differences between racial groups, including intelligence, and you are not doing that. But why go here?
I wrote this book first for my fellow scientists, who haven't necessarily seen the relevance of genetics for their own work or have been afraid to incorporate it because of these associations. There is a large body of scientific knowledge being ignored lest the eugenics genie be let out of the bottle.

Something about my perfect partner isn’t doing it for me…

Posted: 11 Sep 2021 10:00 PM PDT

Love is something you do rather than a thing you fall into, says Philippa Perry

The question My partner and I are both 33. We met around two years ago. He is a kind, attractive person, and from the start it felt safe, relaxed and comfortable, but not especially sparky. This is still true. Yet the more we get to know each other, the more some things improve. Unlike some of my previous partners, he is sensitive, intelligent, consistently kind, caring and generous – qualities I really value and, having had many negative experiences of dating in the past, can appreciate.

The problem is, there is some part of me that is unsure and I don't know why. I think I'd like someone who initiated more conversation or more adventure. I love and care for him very much. I enjoy his company and feel loved; we have good sex. It all seems to be there, but I want to feel more excited, more thrilled by the relationship. The sense of passion and excitement I had in previous relationships probably came from an unhealthy dynamic, because I never knew where I stood.

‘Kids need two things – love and education’: how Ian Wright and Musa Okwonga are inspiring young people through fiction

Posted: 11 Sep 2021 11:00 PM PDT

The football star, with help from the author, has turned his experiences of triumph over adversity into a novel for pre-teens, Here the friends discuss fathers, racism and the redemptive power of sport

Sometimes the detail of a single life story can stop half a nation in its tracks. One such arresting moment was the footballer Ian Wright's extraordinary Desert Island Discs interview with Lauren Laverne in February last year. I had the radio on in the kitchen in the background while I was working to a tight deadline. As soon as Wright started to talk about his childhood, though, I gave up all hope of finishing what I was writing and gave the broadcast my fullest attention. I texted Lisa, my wife, and my daughters to tell them to stop what they were doing and turn it on. By the end, I was crying nearly as much as Wright was.

In recent weeks, when I've mentioned to various friends that I was due to talk to Wright for this piece, they have, unprompted, recalled a similar reaction to hearing him as a castaway: a couple of them remembered blubbing and that compulsion to call loved ones to tell them they had to listen too.

‘It’s sad, but we didn’t benefit much’: Otley reacts to Tour de Yorkshire’s end

Shopkeepers in the market town have mixed emotions about the apparent demise of the acclaimed sporting event

On Saturday mornings the West Yorkshire market town of Otley is a hive of activity, an increasingly rare example of a thriving high street full of independent shops and cafes which does not seem to need much help attracting visitors.

The pretty and historic stone buildings line one of the most popular parts of the Tour de Yorkshire route, one of the country's most popular new sporting events. But next year's event was cancelled last month and does not seem likely to be held again.

Alt-right finds new partners in hate on China’s internet

Posted: 11 Sep 2021 12:00 PM PDT

Populists and nationalists are spreading anti-Muslim, anti-feminist messages – but also backing the Communist party line

In the early days of the 2016 US election campaign, Fang Kecheng, a former journalist at the liberal-leaning Chinese newspaper Southern Weekly and then a PhD student at the University of Pennsylvania, began fact-checking Donald Trump's statements on refugees and Muslims on Chinese social media, hoping to provide additional context to the reporting of the presidential candidate back home in China. But his effort was quickly met with fierce criticism on the Chinese internet.

Some accused him of being a "white left" – a popular insult for idealistic, leftwing and western-oriented liberals; others labelled him a "virgin", a "bleeding heart" and a "white lotus" – demeaning phrases that describe do-gooders who care about the underprivileged - as he tried to defend women's rights.
