Basketball: The wily Belgians have blown it back out to 59-68, but the Japanese sink a couple of free throws right before the buzzer to make it 61-68 at the three-quarter-time break.
Sailing: A bit more on the protest earlier, from reader Lance Miller. "Hi Geoff, there is some confusion about why the Polish boat got in front of the British boat at that final mark. Looking at the video, you can see that they arrived nearly together at the mark, but the Polish boat had right of way as it was on starboard tack, so Hannah had to let the Polish boat round the mark ahead of them. They also couldn't risk trying to squeeze between the Polish boat and the mark because they did not have rights to do that, there could have been a collision or touching the mark, which would have incurred a penalty." Ardern’s popularity stumbles on New Zealand’s slow road to vaccination Posted: 03 Aug 2021 05:42 PM PDT Polls this week suggest the glacial speed of the Covid vaccine rollout is starting to affect Labour's support, even as PM remains personally popular An unbeatable leader in times of crisis, New Zealand prime minister Jacinda Ardern's soaring popularity has teetered on the country's slow road to vaccination. This week, polling in New Zealand indicated some of the gloss may be fading from the Ardern government's second term, which has enjoyed soaringly high popularity over the past year. A year on from Beirut explosion, scars and questions remain Posted: 03 Aug 2021 09:00 PM PDT Lebanese capital remains a shell of a city as efforts to find who is to blame for tragedy have made little progress When his workplace blew to pieces, dockworker Yusuf Shehadi was waiting to hear back from colleagues who had scrambled to help firefighters extinguish a blaze in the port of Beirut. The fire was bad and getting worse, they told him in their last conversation before a giant explosion killed them, and 210 others, a year ago today. The catastrophic blast laid to ruin the place Shehadi had worked for a decade. And he immediately knew its cause. "I had taken the nitrate from the dock to the hangar six years earlier," he said of the massive stockpile of military-grade fertiliser that he had helped move from a freighter to a nearby hangar in 2014. ‘Do you blame us for house prices?’ Gen Zers answer baby boomers’ biggest questions Posted: 03 Aug 2021 10:00 PM PDT What is really going on with virtual sex and identity politics - and when did people stop caring about snooker? Four people born in 2000 offer their advice to people in their 50s, 60s and 70s When interaction between the generations is interrupted – and there doesn't even have to be a pandemic; sometimes we just forget to call each other – it is easy for misunderstandings to flourish. Negative perceptions can build to such a pitch that, even if you had your grandchildren standing right in front of you, you possibly wouldn't want to tackle them head-on. Or perhaps your perceptions aren't negative – there are just pockets of puzzlement. Four zoomers – Patrick Baggaley, Freya Scott-Turner, Rachel Ayo Ogunleye and Aidan Nylander, all born in 2000 – are here to clear up everything. Baggaley is a chef based in London; Scott-Turner is studying journalism and living in Cambridge; Ayo Ogunleye is studying medicine and based in Beckenham, south London; and Nylander is between two degrees and lives in Newcastle. A moment that changed me: I realised I had become a masochist – and quit Twitter Posted: 03 Aug 2021 11:00 PM PDT Social media brought me better jobs, close friends and love. But I was ignoring the ways in which the constant criticism and approval were shaping my life In March 2009, I type in "twitter.com" and sign up for the next 12 years of my life. I am 20, in my first year of uni. I have three friends and hate it here. But, on Twitter, I can talk to real music journalists, my longed-for future people. Two years later, I move to London to work at NME. My social awkwardness makes life in a new city feel like dredging the Thames with baggy tights. On Twitter, however, I have blossomed into a magnificent little chaos magnet. Even on sad, drunk Friday nights in, my phone-sized kingdom glitters. Real life improved, often thanks to Twitter. It led me to John, still my boyfriend 10 years on, and many of my closest friends. Thanks to being a woman in a male-dominated field, the odd viral review and little talent for discretion, I ended up with 60,000 followers. I didn't take it that seriously, but acing my first popularity contest felt like winning Miss World, if she had bad posture and trigger-happy thumbs. Visibility brought better jobs and gave me a platform to retaliate against music's many dirtbags. The mute button silenced reply guys and trolls, and I hadn't searched my name in years, ever since John likened that always-upsetting habit to self-harm – an overstatement that nevertheless rang true. My partner cheated on me – then told me about the fantastic lover she’d found Posted: 04 Aug 2021 12:00 AM PDT This man was well endowed, highly sexed and lasted longer than me. Is our relationship doomed? I have been with my partner for three years, and a month ago she cheated on me. We discussed the matter and from that I discovered that this guy she cheated with is well endowed, lasted longer than me and has a huge sex drive. She now wants us to fix things, but I am uncomfortable knowing all of this. I am afraid that I will not satisfy her and she may end up going back to this person and that I'll be hurt. What can I possibly do to overcome all of this? Don't believe your partner's description of the other guy. It sounds spiteful. Is there a reason why she would try to hurt you? Is she angry or resentful of you for some reason? It's time for a calm talk to try to understand each other far better and to have a chance to express your true feelings without resorting to blaming or name-calling. Tell her honestly that you feel uncomfortable and afraid and say: "Please help me to understand your feelings too." After a breach of trust it takes time to repair a damaged relationship and the hazy spectre of a rival's dimensions is really the least of your worries. Continue reading... |
Los Lobos: ‘La Bamba gave us an identity crisis’ Posted: 03 Aug 2021 04:51 AM PDT Best known for their global No 1 in 1987, the Los Angeleno band first emerged through the phlegm of the punk movement and are now returning to their roots Los Lobos reached pop's pinnacle in 1987 when their cover of La Bamba, recorded for a film of the same name, reached No 1 around the world. On their way up, and indeed back down the other side, the Los Angeles roots-rockers have mastered multiple musical styles during nearly 50 years together – from traditional Mexican folk to jump blues and avant-rock – and have earned 11 Grammy nominations (with three wins), working or appearing with Paul Simon, the Clash, film-maker Robert Rodriguez and more along the way. Now, to move forward, Los Lobos decided to look back. Native Sons, their 17th studio album, is a wide-ranging celebration of the LA artists that inspired the band early on. With covers of well-known pop tunes by the Beach Boys (Sail on Sailor) and Buffalo Springfield (For What It's Worth) sitting alongside rare cuts from 60s garage rockers Thee Midniters and Latin jazz legend Willie Bobo, it's the perfect polyglot collection for this multi-faceted ensemble. "You wouldn't run into [these artists] at the same party," says guitarist Louie Pérez Jr. "But once they all got to the party, everyone in the band thought, 'Hey, this is kind of fun.'" Comic Jamie MacDonald on being creative and blind: ‘It’s triumph with – not over – adversity’ Posted: 03 Aug 2021 07:39 AM PDT In new BBC show Blind Ambition, MacDonald and Jamie O'Leary meet artists who have lost their sight – including a rapper, a photographer and a wood turner 'who still has all his fingers' I'm a blind standup comedian, currently co-starring in the BBC Two documentary Blind Ambition. As the title suggests, the show is about blindness. But please don't think this is a violins, tissues at the ready, "oh didn't they do well" type of documentary. The show creator and Essex wide boy Jamie O'Leary wanted to make a different kind of show about disability. You'll know the classic disabled show formula: person has a dark phase then overcomes their disability and achieves something wonderful. In this paradigm the disability is a hurdle that needs to be jumped over. Or, if there are mobility issues at play, an obstacle to get around. In the Blind Ambition paradigm, blindness – a disability readers of the New York Times voted the worst thing a person could have in the world (which is bollocks as blind people can't read the flipping New York Times so couldn't vote) – is positive. All Hands on Deck review – fresh and funny French holiday romance Posted: 04 Aug 2021 02:00 AM PDT A romantic surprise has unexpected consequences in a gentle comedy channelling Éric Rohmer crossed with Carry on Camping Here is a terrifically fresh, funny and gentle film from director and co-writer Guillaume Brac, which takes quite seriously something that's always getting dismissed or patronised in pop culture: the holiday romance. The French title is À L'Abordage!, more properly translated as "Attack!" and the film is about seizing the day, going on the offensive and fortune favouring the bold. Newcomer Eric Nantchouang plays Félix, an easygoing young guy in Paris with a naturally smiley open face; he has a moment with Alma (Asma Messaoudene) and when she says she's going on holiday with her parents and sister in the beautiful valley of Die in south-eastern France, Félix secretly resolves to go there himself and give her what he is confident will be a wonderful romantic surprise. But he brings along his buddy Chérif (Salif Cissé) for moral support and using a ride-sharing app, they bamboozle nervy young Édouard (Édouard Sulpice) into driving them there in his mum's car. Soon it becomes clear that Alma has rather complicated feelings about seeing Félix again quite so unexpectedly; meanwhile, Félix and Chérif become mates with uptight Édouard and it seems like self-effacing Chérif has feelings for Héléna (Ana Blagojevic), a single mum he meets at their campsite. Shattered and scarred: Beirut’s devastation then and now – in pictures Posted: 03 Aug 2021 11:00 PM PDT One year on from the huge explosion in the port of Beirut in Lebanon the devastation from the blast is still visible At least 200 people were killed, and more than 6,000 injured in the Beirut blast that devastated the port area on 4 August 2020. The explosion is believed to have been caused by an estimated 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate stored in a warehouse. Away from the broken grain silos, and their rotting contents, Lebanon remains paralysed and anguished. The investigation into the blast has flatlined, and its perpetrators are as far away from accountability as ever. The global aid pledged in the wake of the destruction remains forsaken by the country's rulers, who prefer the narrow privileges that flowed to them from a crippled system to a global rescue plan that could save the country. Lucrative fundraising points to small but strong Republican anti-Trump resistance Posted: 04 Aug 2021 02:00 AM PDT Cashflow suggests while Trump retains an iron grip on party, there is still significant money behind efforts to wrest it free Taking a stand against Donald Trump is guaranteed to bring Republicans online abuse, primary election challengers and barbs from the former US president himself. But it is also proving lucrative as donors scramble to breathe life into the anti-Trump resistance. Liz Cheney, a Republican congresswoman from Wyoming and leading Trump critic, enjoyed her second consecutive record fundraising quarter with $1.88m from April to June, according to financial reports filed with the Federal Election Commission. She had raised $1.54m in the first three months of the year. Continue reading... |
If the US really cared about freedom in Cuba, it would end its punishing sanctions | Helen Yaffe Posted: 04 Aug 2021 01:00 AM PDT Critics dismiss Cuba as a failed state, but don't accept how badly it's hamstrung by the US blockade The violent protests that erupted in Cuba in early July were the first serious social disturbances since the "Maleconazo" of 1994, 27 years ago. Both these periods were characterised by deep economic crises. I was living in Havana in the mid-90s and witnessed the conditions that triggered the uprising: empty food markets, shops and pharmacy shelves, regular electricity cuts, production and transport ground to a halt. Such were the consequences of the collapse of the socialist bloc, which accounted for about 90% of the island's trade. Betting on the collapse of Cuban socialism, the US approved the Torricelli Act of 1992 and the Helms-Burton Act of 1996 to obstruct the island's trade and financial relations with the rest of the world. Meanwhile, more sophisticated and multifaceted "regime change" programmes were developed, from Clinton's people-to-people programmes to Bush's Commission for a Free Cuba. From the mid-1990s to 2015, US congress appropriated some $284 million to promote (capitalist) democracy. Continue reading... |
Head of Australia’s vaccine strategy not ruling out cash incentives to achieve 80% target Posted: 04 Aug 2021 02:13 AM PDT Lt Gen John Frewen says demand still exceeds supply but incentives may be needed to counter vaccine hesitancy later in the year
The head of the country's Covid vaccination program, Lt Gen John Frewen, says the government may yet use cash incentives to encourage take-up, as he says it is "mathematically" possible for 80% of eligible Australians to be fully immunised by December. New targets released by Frewen's taskforce on Tuesday forecast a rapid ramp-up of the vaccination program over the coming months, with Operation Covid Shield planning to use drive-through vaccination clinics, retail hubs and workplace vaccination programs to drive up the national vaccination rate from its current 20% level. Posted: 03 Aug 2021 03:20 PM PDT What was delivered was a watered-down version of what we called for – it will do little to dismantle systemic racism When the Polynesian Panthers (PPP) activist group began calling for an apology for the dawn raids two years ago, we went into the process with eyes wide open. Government lobbyists seldom get everything they ask for, but our intent was honest and real and fuelled by our Panther legacy and love for the people. We believe that the apology was, and is, a necessary step towards the healing and restoration of trust and relationships between the Pacific peoples and families who were adversely affected by government actions during the dawn raids and the government. Cuomo denies sexual harassment claims in New York attorney general report – video Posted: 03 Aug 2021 12:31 PM PDT The governor of New York state, Andrew Cuomo, faced demands to resign on Tuesday after an investigation found he sexually harassed 11 women. An explosive 165-page report released by the state attorney general, Letitia James, delivered a mountain of damning and often graphic evidence that Cuomo created a 'climate of fear' in a 'toxic' workplace and violated federal and state civil laws. But the governor released a defiant video address, insisting that 'I never touched anyone inappropriately or made inappropriate sexual advances' and making clear he still has no intention of stepping down
