Tokyo Paralympics: China surge to top of medal table, Russell and Dunn claim gold in pool – live! Posted: 27 Aug 2021 02:49 AM PDT
An unfortunate inevitability of athletic competition these days, there are always statements like these. From Reuters: Polish track cyclist Marcin Polak, who won a bronze medal at the Paralympic Games in Tokyo, has been provisionally suspended after testing positive for the banned blood booster EPO (erythropoietin), the International Cycling Union (UCI) said on Friday. "The rider has been provisionally suspended pending the final adjudication of the matter. He is thus not allowed to participate in the Men's B 1000m time trial of the Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020 scheduled for 28 August 2021," the UCI said in a statement. "The consequences on the bronze medal he obtained in the Men's B 4000m individual pursuit of the Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020 will be determined by the relevant disciplinary panel." Polak, 38, won his bronze medal on Wednesday. He also claimed two time trial world titles in 2015 and 2017, and won an individual pursuit world title on the track in 2019.
Wheelchair rugby: The Americans might take the lead here. Some heavy defensive work blocks off the line once, twice, three times, and eventually no try is awarded to GB. Down the other end, USA will score and lead 40-39! Five minutes left. |

Ersin Tatar, who heads the Turkish-controlled north and is among those affected, described the policy as "an assault" on attempts to find a solution to the country's partition. Previously he had called the move "racist" and "anachronistic". Continue reading... |
Scottish independence vote depends on sustained support, says UK minister Posted: 27 Aug 2021 02:38 AM PDT Alister Jack says government could allow vote if support for referendum stays above 60% for long period The UK government could approve a second Scottish independence referendum if support for staging one stays above 60% for a sustained period, Alister Jack, the Scotland secretary, has said. Jack said consistent support for a fresh vote would confirm to the government that one was justified, as he signalled a further softening of the Conservatives' previously rigid rejection of Scottish National party demands for a second referendum. ‘We were punch bags’: North Korean prison beatings form of torture, says UN Posted: 26 Aug 2021 10:00 PM PDT Reports of forced labour and severe punishments for detainees add to growing evidence of abuses worsening during the pandemic Detainees in North Korea are forced into gruelling manual labour and beaten so severely it may be a form of torture, the UN has said, as it warned that Covid-19 had exacerbated human rights concerns in the notoriously oppressive country. In a report to be presented at the UN general assembly in September, the UN secretary general, António Guterres, said fresh accounts given to the UN Human Rights Office (OHCHR) had added to "a growing body of information confirming consistent patterns of human rights violations". Apple agrees to App Store changes letting developers email users about payment options Posted: 26 Aug 2021 10:56 PM PDT Preliminary lawsuit settlement allows developers to circumvent the tech giant's lucrative commission system Independent developers will be allowed to tell iPhone users about ways of avoiding the "Apple Tax" on their apps for the first time, as part of an out-of-court settlement concluding a class-action lawsuit against the company. The agreement, which is accompanied by a $100m payout from Apple to be distributed among App Store developers who have earned less than $1m over the past six years, represents a small but significant concession from the company, whose iron grip over the App Store has earned it billions in profit alongside accusations of unlawful monopolistic behaviour. Former Italian prime minister and billionaire media mogul Silvio Berlusconi is back in hospital for tests, his spokesman confirmed Friday. "Hospitalisation was required for a thorough clinical evaluation," he told AFP, after media reports that the 84-year-old was admitted to Milan's San Raffaele hospital on Thursday.
In the UK, Primark changing rooms at two London stores will become vaccination clinics this bank holiday weekend. Shoppers can turn up without an appointment and get a first or second dose of the Pfizer coronavirus vaccine, NHS England said. It is fantastic that over a million young Londoners have had the vaccine, but it is vital that all get vaccinated to protect themselves from the harm coronavirus can cause even at their young age, as well as preventing transmission to more vulnerable friends and family. Following the success of the vaccination clinics in our stores in Bristol and Birmingham, we're pleased to be able to offer people in London the opportunity to get their vaccine this weekend at our Wood Green and Oxford Street (East) store," she said. Wherever we can, we try to support important local community initiatives and we're really pleased that we can play a small part in supporting the work of the NHS by making it even easier for people to get their vaccine. Gareth Southgate: I got more abuse for vaccine video than managing England Posted: 26 Aug 2021 02:30 PM PDT
Gareth Southgate has revealed that he received more abuse for recording a video urging young people to have a Covid-19 vaccination than he did for his management of England during their run to the final of Euro 2020. England's manager, who handed Leeds United's Patrick Bamford his first call-up when he named his squad for next month's World Cup qualifiers against Hungary, Poland and Andorra, admitted he is worried about misinformation on social media convincing some footballers not to have the jab. Vinnie Jones: ‘My career flew off the rails. The wheels were going. There wasn’t a spare seat!’ Posted: 27 Aug 2021 12:00 AM PDT The footballer-turned-movie hard man is back, starring in a new Footsoldier film. He talks about how his film and TV career exploded and refinding his dignity I am, obviously, scared of Vinnie Jones. Even though he is calling from New York, 3,000 miles and five hours away, I keep expecting him to click his neck three times and pull me into a breathless headlock. But instead, he is sleepy and then charming, and doesn't threaten to kick my face in once. He is sleepy because he was up until 2.30am shooting Law & Order: Organized Crime, in which he appears in the recurring role of Albanian gangster Albi. "Going toe-to-toe with Christopher Meloni," he smiles, "a legend in the acting world." Continue reading... |
A new start after 60: ‘I always dreamed of being a writer – and published my first novel at 70’ Posted: 26 Aug 2021 10:00 PM PDT In her thirties, Anne Youngson wrote a book in her lunch breaks at work. It stayed in a drawer. Then she retired, wrote her debut and was shortlisted for a major award When Anne Youngson's agent told her a publisher had made an offer for her first novel, she was worried. "I said: 'Don't they want to meet me?' I was convinced that when they discovered how old I was, their whole attitude to whether they wanted me would change," she says. Youngson was 69 then and 70 when her debut – Meet Me at the Museum – was published. Her first instinct was to see her age as a commercial disadvantage. "I thought they would look at me and think: 'Oh God, how will we promote this?'" But then Meet Me at the Museum was shortlisted for the Costa First Novel award, and she had to think again. Her second novel, Three Women and a Boat, was published last year. Now 73, she is midway through writing her third. Continue reading... |

Experience: I was attacked by two sharks at once Posted: 27 Aug 2021 02:00 AM PDT The great white swiped for my head, but missed, because another had got there first It was a warm winter's day in South Africa and I planned to go surfing at Nahoon Reef. I was 15 and had just finished my first day back at school after the winter break. The reef is famous among surfers for its powerful waves and popularity with sharks. If you see lots of birds diving into the reef or notice a strong fishy smell in the air, you should not surf there. But on that day in July 2000, the waves were perfect, just over head high, and there was no wind. The water was warm for winter, too. The conditions were too good to resist. Continue reading... |
‘It was the happiest time’: The Beach Boys on their strange second coming Posted: 26 Aug 2021 10:00 PM PDT They helped define the 60s, but were hopelessly uncool as the 70s began – and Brian Wilson was unravelling. The band discuss the masterpieces they made against the odds In the 1960s, the Beach Boys staked their claim as the US's most popular band, as their dazzling, harmony-drenched songs about surfing, cars and California Girls epitomised the American dream. So, at the end of the decade, when leader and principal songwriter Brian Wilson – who had recently spent several months in a psychiatric hospital – suggested that the band were on the verge of bankruptcy, everyone thought it was a joke. "We arrived in London for a tour on the day that hit the headlines," co-founder Al Jardine says over the phone from California. "The IRS [US tax collection agency] had closed our studio and our offices in Hollywood. The hotels wouldn't accept our corporate credit cards. In the end, I had to use my personal American Express card to pay for our rooms." Continue reading... |

Right now, my freezer is a mess of ice cubes and lollies and roughly a ton of loose peas, leaving me without enough room to freeze things that are actually useful. Getting your freezer organised is a great idea, so allow me to list all the things you can freeze, but probably don't. Honestly, this list is as much for me as it is for you. Continue reading... |

‘We want to create magic’: Taking cinema to remote Spanish villages Posted: 26 Aug 2021 09:15 PM PDT La Barraca de Cine has spent the past year roving its way around dozens of communities across the country Stretching six metres and painted turquoise, the trailer has trundled across Spain, making its way to mountaintop villages, cobblestone plazas and medieval historical centres. No matter the location, the process starts much in the same way: with the unfurling of a giant screen. "Our motto is cinema for everyone and anywhere," said Patricia de Luna, one of the co-founders of La Barraca de Cine, a roving cinema that has made its way to dozens of villages across Spain in the past year. "Those evenings of cinema with family, friends and that shared experience with those around you – that's the magic we want to create." Continue reading... |

The accord replaces another agreement signed by more than 200 international fashion companies after the Rana Plaza factory fire in 2013, in which more than 1,100 people died. For the first time, these companies faced legal action if their health and safety standards were found lacking or if they did not address problems in an agreed time period. More than 38,000 inspections have been carried out since 2013, and nearly 200 factories have lost their contracts owing to poor safety standards. Continue reading... |

Kamala Harris’s south-east Asia trip reveals limits of US strategy Posted: 26 Aug 2021 09:01 PM PDT Analysis: With little sign of big ideas or ambitious proposals, some analysts say vice-president's trip reflects how little the administration is investing in the region In October 2013, as the former US president Barack Obama had to cancel his four-nation tour of south-east Asia due to the congressional impasse at home, China's president Xi Jinping, instead, made the news headlines across the region. On that trip to Indonesia, Xi proposed to set up an Asian infrastructure investment bank to support the region's "connectivity". He and his Indonesian counterpart, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, also announced $32bn of trade and investment deals. Then in Malaysia, Xi and the prime minister, Najib Razak, vowed to strengthen military ties and triple bilateral trade to $160bn by 2017. Continue reading... |
Kabul airport atrocity offers a glimpse of the chaos to come in Afghanistan Posted: 26 Aug 2021 09:01 PM PDT Joe Biden left with no good options after deadliest day for US troops in Afghanistan in more than a decade The tempting comparison between the withdrawals of US forces from Kabul in 2021 and Saigon in 1975 has offered diminishing returns over the past 12 days. Whereas about 7,000 people were evacuated from Vietnam (5,500 Vietnamese civilians and about 1,500 Americans), more than 95,000 people have left Afghanistan in a historic airlift since 14 August, the day before the capital fell to the Taliban. The organisation's affiliate in Afghanistan known as Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP), had been pointed to as the prime suspect immediately after the blast. The IS official Amaq news agency said on its Telegram channel that a member called Abdul Rahman al-Logari carried out "the martyrdom operation near Kabul Airport". The name suggests the killer of at least 12 US servicemen and more than 60 civilians was Afghan. Continue reading... |
