Pakistan's foreign minister has called for an inclusive political settlement with the Taliban, Reuters reports, describing it as the best way forward for peace and stability in Afghanistan.

According to a foreign ministry statement, Shah Mahmood Qureshi made the remarks in a phone call with his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, about the situation in Afghanistan.

The UK defence secretary, Ben Wallace, repeatedly underlined that extending the rescue operation into September was "unlikely" this morning. Here is our full report on the minister's comments ahead of today's G7 meeting:

US vice president Kamala Harris has delivered a sharp rebuke to China for its incursions in the South China Sea, warning its actions there amount to "coercion" and "intimidation" and affirming that the US will support its allies in the region against Beijing's advances.

"We know that Beijing continues to coerce, to intimidate and to make claims to the vast majority of the South China Sea," she said in a major foreign policy speech Tuesday in Singapore in which she laid out the Biden administration's vision for the Indo-Pacific. "Beijing's actions continue to undermine the rules-based order and threaten the sovereignty of nations."

Climate crisis made deadly German floods ‘up to nine times more likely’

Posted: 23 Aug 2021 03:01 PM PDT

Study reinforces the hard evidence that carbon emissions are the main cause of worsening extreme weather

The record-shattering rainfall that caused deadly flooding across Germany and Belgium in July was made up to nine times more likely by the climate crisis, according to research.

The study also showed that human-caused global heating has made downpours in the region up to 20% heavier. The work reinforces the findings of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's landmark report this month that there is "unequivocal" evidence that greenhouse gas emissions from human activities are the main cause of worsening extreme weather.

When Donald Trump launched his presidential campaign in 2015 by saying "Nobody builds walls better than me", it was to say the least a questionable claim.

A Seychelles giant tortoise, a species previously thought to be a strict herbivore, has been filmed chasing and eating a baby bird in a "horrifying and amazing" attack, with researchers stating it was the first documented example of deliberate hunting in the wild by the species.

The video, taken on Fregate Island in July 2020, shows a female giant tortoise slowly stalking a lesser noddy tern chick, snapping at it unsuccessfully before delivering a lethal bow by clamping its jaws directly around its head.

Coronavirus live news: Hawaii governor wants to curb travel; Israel boosters ‘beating Delta’

US state asks people to reduce movement to tackle spread of Delta strain; Israel sees cases dip in wake of third shots; Australia's Crood plan

In both weird and good news, llama antibodies could soon be playing a role in the global fight against Covid-19, if clinical trials being conducted by a Belgian biomedical start-up live up to their early promise.

Researchers from the VIB-UGent Center for Medical Biotechnology in Ghent say antibodies extracted from a llama called Winter have blunted the virulence of coronavirus infections, including variants, in laboratory testing, Reuters reports.

People infected with the more transmissible Delta variant have a viral load 300 times higher than those with the original version of the Covid-19 virus, when symptoms are first observed, a South Korean study found.

But the amount gradually decreased over time – to 30 times in four days and more than 10 times in nine days – and it matched levels seen in other variants after 10 days, the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) said on Tuesday.

But it doesn't mean Delta is 300 times more infectious … we think its transmission rate is 1.6 times the Alpha variant, and about two times the original version of the virus.

Does Covid-19 follow a similar seasonal pattern to flu?

To answer this question scientists compared coronavirus rates between March 2020 and March 2021 from five countries – Canada, Germany, India, Ethiopia and Chile – with daily mean temperature, humidity, ultraviolet radiation and air-drying capacity (a measure of how quickly droplets evaporate).

‘I feel like it’s quite shaky acceptance’: trans kids and the fight for inclusion

Posted: 23 Aug 2021 10:00 PM PDT

Trans children and their families still often face suspicion and suppression, but attitudes are changing

'My preconceptions about trans people came from the media, and I certainly hadn't heard of trans children. So it just flummoxed me having an assigned male child who didn't have especially 'feminine' interests and yet was saying consistently, 'I'm a girl.'"

Kate was telling me about her eldest daughter, Alex. (Names of all trans young people, and of their parents, have been changed for their privacy.) It was a warm July evening, and we were sitting in the kitchen of their family home, in a comfortable British suburb populated by middle-class couples with young families. Alex, still at primary school, is trans. A few years ago, her mum assumed she was a boy who was clumsily trying to ask for typically feminine things. "I remember I used to have conversations with her at a very young age in the car because she'd get really upset. I'd say: 'But I don't understand what would be different if you were a girl? What can't you do that you could do if you were a girl?' I'd ask: 'Do you want a doll?' She'd just reply: 'I don't like dolls!'"

After the intermission: films are back in cinemas – but will the crowds return too?

Posted: 24 Aug 2021 02:00 AM PDT

Covid and the boom in streaming platforms are being touted as a huge threat to cinema-going. But so was telly. And surely we're all desperate to leave the house and make a big social occasion of it all?

So are we in or out? Is this going to be the old normal or some new normal that the business still hasn't yet grasped? As we look forward to what's on offer in cinemas this autumn, we see new films mixed in with a deja-vu raft of old product delayed from the distant "before times" of pre-Covid. These films are beginning to feel like pizzas removed from the freezer cabinet, thawed out, and then unhygienically put back in the freezer. And of course we are all still absorbing the fact that Covid conforms neither to the accepted news cycles or movie distribution release structures. There could still be a fourth or a fifth wave. Cinemas could still be shut down again.

Covid might have changed the movie world temporarily or permanently or not at all, but as we fret fruitlessly about the discomfort of wearing masks in cinemas, the revolution could have already arrived in the new economy of streaming – which had been changing the game anyway.

Invasive fish push westward as the Mediterranean Sea slowly becomes tropical

Posted: 23 Aug 2021 10:30 PM PDT

A host of fish species arriving via the Suez canal look set to stay – with perilous consequences for ecosystems

Pasquale Tuccio docks his small, blue and white wooden boat at the old pier on Linosa, one of Italy's tiny Pelagie islands in the strait of Sicily. Inspecting his gillnet, he finds a slipper lobster, some sea bream, a bunch of parrotfish – and about six rabbitfish. Unlike his fellow fishers, who toss rabbitfish back, Tuccio will take them home for his cat. The fish have venomous spines, however, and he still remembers his first encounter with them. "I got stung only once," Tuccio says. "I hope it won't happen again. It was so painful."

Rabbitfish Siganus luridusalso known as dusky spinefoot – is a tropical species, native to the Indian and Pacific Oceans. After the Suez canal opened in 1869, the rabbitfish entered the eastern Mediterranean, making its way into Greek waters by 1964. It has since moved into the western Mediterranean, where it has found an abundance of its favourite food: seagrass. In more recent years, the rabbitfish has been multiplying in the waters around Linosa, where it devours the forests of algae. Researchers have found it as far west as France.

Climate scientists have said that while it's difficult to give a precise attribution as yet to the floods in Tennessee and the impact of Hurricane Henri in New England, the fingerprints of the human-caused climate crisis are undoubtably present to some degree.

Afghanistan: what does each nation hope to get out of the G7 meeting?

Analysis: Tuesday's meeting called by Boris Johnson may include postmortem on Joe Biden's handling of crisis

The emergency meeting of G7 nations on Tuesday – called by Boris Johnson as this year's chair of the G7 – is in essence a gathering of the vanquished but faces a threefold agenda: how to ensure as many Afghans as possible can leave Kabul, and whether the US is prepared to stay beyond the original 31 August deadline for the withdrawal of all US forces; how a resettlement programme can be coordinated for the medium term; and finally, how to encourage the Taliban to form an inclusive government, including by threatening sanctions or withholding recognition.

But each country will bring its own concerns and an ugly postmortem on Joe Biden's handling of the crisis cannot be ruled out.
