The UN agency's head called the situation "unimaginably dire". Nearly every child around the world was at risk from at least one of these impacts today, including heatwaves, floods, cyclones, disease, drought, and air pollution, the report said. But 1 billion children live in 33 countries facing three or four impacts simultaneously. The countries include India, Nigeria and the Philippines, and much of sub-Saharan Africa. White House backtracks after Biden appears to say US would defend Taiwan against China Posted: 19 Aug 2021 07:29 PM PDT Administration official plays down president's comment comparing Taiwan commitments to those in Nato, saying US policy has not shifted A senior Biden administration official said US policy on Taiwan had not changed after President Joe Biden appeared to suggest the US would defend the island if it were attacked, a deviation from a long-held US position of "strategic ambiguity". In an interview aired by ABC News on Thursday, Biden was asked about the effects of the chaotic US withdrawal from Afghanistan and responses in Chinese media telling Taiwan this showed Washington could not be relied on to come to its defence. ‘I don’t hold back’: Merkel to meet Putin in farewell Kremlin visit Posted: 19 Aug 2021 08:30 PM PDT The end of one of Europe's most complex political relationships is likely to focus on Ukraine Angela Merkel's "farewell visit" to the Kremlin on Friday will mark the end of one of Europe's oldest and most complex political relationships, a tense 15-year tug-of-war between Europe's elder statesperson and the bloc's chief antagonist in Vladimir Putin. Though deeply strained, their relationship never snapped. The German chancellor was reportedly distrustful of the former KGB officer from his first appearance in 2001 before the Bundestag, where he wooed MPs in fluent German as he called for unity against international terrorism. As the scale of the threat became increasingly clear in January and February 2020, officials in Donald Trump's administration were trying to convince him to take the threat seriously, despite personal reassurances he had been given by the Chinese president, Xi Jinping, that it was under control. Coronavirus live news: Israel to start booster shots for over 40s; UK approves new Covid treatment Posted: 20 Aug 2021 02:54 AM PDT Israelis aged 40 and over to receive booster shots starting this weekend; Ronapreve found to lower hospitalisation or mortality by 70%
An AstraZeneca executive said the prospect of offering a new treatment to prevent Covid-19 could position the British drugmaker as a supplier of both vaccines and drugs which guard against the infectious disease. The remarks by executive Mene Pangalos this morning, after antibody drug AZD7442 was shown to prevent COVID-19 in a trial, came after another leading executive, Ruud Dobber, said last month that different options were being explored for the vaccine operations, which stem from a collaboration with Oxford University.
Two months into New South Wales's Delta outbreak, the premier has toughened and extended greater Sydney's lockdown and introduced a curfew in the western suburbs, declaring "it is time for all of us to bunker down and take this as seriously as we can". NSW health authorities reported 644 local Covid cases and four deaths on Friday. Gladys Berejiklian said two factors were behind the new restrictions, including a state-wide mask mandate and expanded police powers – surging case numbers and compliance breaches. Outkast’s 20 greatest songs – ranked! Posted: 19 Aug 2021 11:00 PM PDT As their classic second album ATLiens turns 25, we look back at the best from a duo who turned rap into a psychedelic, progressive playground The title seems to refer to Outkast's refusal to be constrained by musical boundaries and expectations as much as to the social struggles detailed in its lyrics: Liberation more or less abandons rapping entirely. Instead, there are vocals – from Erykah Badu and Cee-Lo Green, among others – and a defiant message: "You have a choice to be who you wants to be." Continue reading... |
Jude Law: ‘I remember being told not to get above myself. Such appalling British advice’ Posted: 19 Aug 2021 10:00 PM PDT In Sean Durkin's new film The Nest, Law plays an 80s broker whose financial deals destroy his marriage. He and the director talk about making his character likable – and how US can-do culture changed class-ridden Britain
It wasn't. Not even for an actor like Law, who has been in healthy demand on both sides of the Atlantic ever since. But it was one of the first times that the US felt like a real place to him, rather than a distant fantasy. "The memory as a kid was always, we were waiting for what happened in America," says Law. "So, you know, films were always shown in America first. I remember hearing about Indiana Jones or the next Star Wars, and you'd see pictures on the news of people queuing for the cinema in the States and you'd think: 'Well, when are we gonna get it?' There was always this sense of it being ahead. They did a phenomenal job of selling us this lifestyle that just seemed so other and glamorous and cool." Continue reading... |
A new start after 60: ‘I became a trapeze artist at 65’ Posted: 19 Aug 2021 10:00 PM PDT Nikki Kenward had a troubled childhood with little opportunity for play. But in her 60s she entered the world of the circus, where 'anything goes and anything is possible' When Nikki Kenward was 30, she thought it was time to stop dancing. As a single parent, performance schedules were unforgiving. And, besides, that was the age at which dancers tended to retire. Now, at 67, she has taken up circus. The circus performer Katy Kartwheel lived nearby in Buckinghamshire. "I saw on Facebook that she was offering classes. I thought: 'Classes in aerial in Marlow! That looks fun.' So I emailed her and said: 'Would you take a woman in her 60s?' She said: 'Great! Come along!'" Continue reading... |
Experience: I made friends with my doppelganger Posted: 20 Aug 2021 02:00 AM PDT We had never met – yet we looked almost identical and had similar life stories. Now we do poetry readings together in matching jumpers My wife, Marion, and I moved to Braintree in 2013 to be near our daughter and grandchildren, and I was struck by how friendly some of the locals were. Strangers would often wave as I passed them in the street. Some of them would also say, "Hello, John!" My name's Neil, but I let it pass. On one occasion we were in a cafe when a man came over and said, "You're John Jemison, aren't you?" Continue reading... |

‘I wouldn’t take my kids to this’: Star Wars’ Phil Tippett on his hellish animation Mad God Posted: 20 Aug 2021 12:00 AM PDT The leading visual effects designer, whose credits include Star Wars and Jurassic Park, has spent three decades directing his gruesome animated fable You definitely know Phil Tippett's work even if you don't know his name. The 3D chess game in Star Wars, the AT-ATs and Tauntauns in Empire Strikes Back, ED-209 in Robocop, the bugs from Starship Troopers and the dinosaurs from Jurassic Park are just some of the creations Tippett has brought to life. One of Hollywood's leading visual effects designers since the 1970s, Tippett has just spent three decades directing his first feature film: Mad God, a gruesome animated fable wherein a mysterious spy must infiltrate the lower depths on a dangerous mission. It starts with one of the shirtier quotes from Leviticus, the Bible's angriest book, before plummeting to the depths of a gory, dripping underworld. Think Dante via Ren and Stimpy, or Pasolini with stop motion animation. Mad God might be animation, but it's not kids' stuff. Tippett has just premiered it at the Locarno film festival, where he he sat next to a family. "Mum and dad and a couple of little kids, so I said to them: 'I wouldn't take my kids to this.' They got up to leave a few minutes later. The mum said I was right. And I said, 'It gets worse.'" Indeed, it does. Continue reading... |

Sexting, lies and unveiled selfies: the Egyptian film exploring the hidden lives of teenage girls Posted: 19 Aug 2021 08:06 AM PDT Ayten Amin's Souad is a razor-sharp portrayal of sisterhood and sexual awakening that is rarely represented on screen When the Egyptian director Ayten Amin was 10 years old, a classmate's sister killed herself. The news gripped the school. But, in a society where suicide is a sin, no one talked about it; instead, they mourned the girl as though she had died mysteriously, or in an accident. "When I was shooting my first film, it suddenly hit me," Amin says over a video call from her home in Cairo. "How did my classmate feel back then? How did she grow up knowing what happened, but with no one talking about it?" In her new film, Souad, Amin explores precisely this: the hidden lives of teenage girls in Egypt. It follows the title character (played by Bassant Ahmed) and Rabab (Basmala Elghaiesh), sisters of 19 and 13 living in Zagazig, a small city 40 miles north of Cairo in the Nile delta. To her family and friends, Souad is as religious as she is studious – but she lives a different life online. She has virtual relationships with men and becomes enthralled by the glamorous-seeming Ahmed (Hussein Ghanem), an influencer from the fashionable Mediterranean city of Alexandria. Their relationship begins to sour when Souad stands up Ahmed for a real-life date; it gets steadily worse as a cycle of sexts and arguments sets in. Then tragedy strikes. Continue reading... |

‘Move heaven and earth’: pressure on Biden to speed up visas for Afghans who helped US Posted: 19 Aug 2021 10:30 PM PDT Members of Congress warn that those who aided US military are in grave danger as they wait for evacuations and paperwork For the two decades the US waged war in Afghanistan, hundreds of thousands of Afghans worked with American forces at great risk to themselves and their families. A small fraction of those translators, drivers and other workers were promised pathways to special visas to leave the country and relocate to the US in return for their service. But now, after a hasty US military departure and an even faster takeover by the Taliban, thousands of applicants to these programs and other refugees find themselves in limbo with an unclear timeline on when their applications will be processed and serious questions about their safety while they wait. Facing a hospitals crisis, Gladys Berejiklian is finally getting tough on Covid | Anne Davies Posted: 20 Aug 2021 02:53 AM PDT The NSW premier's inclination has always been to limit restrictions, but as the Delta outbreak worsens that's had to change
In New South Wales's desperate battle to stop its hospital system being overwhelmed and curb case numbers Gladys Berejiklian has been forced to adopt measures she only last week said were unnecessary. As I walk around Kabul, the streets are empty of women Posted: 19 Aug 2021 06:36 AM PDT A few days ago the capital was full of women going about their business. Now, the few that remain walk fast and full of fear Four days after the quick and unexpected invasion of Kabul by the Taliban, the streets of the Afghan capital are almost entirely devoid of women. The few women who are on the streets are wearing the traditional blue burqa, Islamic garb that, while customary in Afghanistan, was not used as widely in Kabul until now. Many women are dressed in the long black clothes commonly worn in the Middle East and Arab nations. Continue reading... |
‘No one comes here any more’: the human cost as Covid wipes out tourism Posted: 19 Aug 2021 06:12 AM PDT From Bolivia's Lake Titicaca to wildlife tourism in Nepal, we find out how the crisis has affected people in four travel hotspots – and whether or not they want the tourists to return In March last year, it was predicted that the global travel shutdown would cause international arrivals to plummet by 20 to 30% by the end of 2020. Six weeks later, the UN World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) revised their warning: international arrivals could fall by up to 80% – equating to a billion fewer tourists and the worst crisis in the history of the industry. Posted: 19 Aug 2021 04:00 AM PDT As Covid continues to curb visits to see our iconic wildlife, now is the time to move away from western-led funding models That African governments have failed to mobilise funds to conserve their vast protected areas is not in doubt. Countries were just about managing to pay basic salaries to rangers who barely had enough to put fuel in their patrol vehicles. Covid has exacerbated this already dire situation, with the loss of income from foreign tourism. The continent has more than 8,500 protected areas, described by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as government-led national parks, areas jointly governed by state agencies, communities, privately owned wildlife reserves, and public-private partnerships between governments, companies and NGOs. Included too, are what the IUCN calls "indigenous peoples and communities conserved territories and areas". Continue reading...This posting includes an audio/video/photo media file: Download Now |
Posted: 19 Aug 2021 05:45 PM PDT History judges uninterested bystanders harshly. New Zealand must commit to saving more Afghans from the Taliban regime What is unfolding now in Afghanistan is a moment that Afghans can't turn away from. It will mean separated families, death, torture and sexual slavery – women, the rainbow community, journalists and human rights defenders will be most zealously targeted. At this critical moment, they have hope of rescue. But in Aotearoa New Zealand, our government is at risk of letting this hope slip away. History judges uninterested bystanders harshly. It isn't like us to be one of those. This week our government announced we would send a New Zealand defence force (NZDF) vessel to bring a limited category of people back from Kabul. On Thursday one of our air force Hercules planes left for Afghanistan, and I acknowledge the risks our defence force personnel are taking in this time of Covid-19 to save the lives of people who have helped us.
