Russia-based marketing firm sought to pay social media influencers to smear Covid vaccines

A network of 65 Facebook accounts and 243 Instagram accounts was traced back to Fazze, an advertising and marketing firm working on behalf of an unknown client. The network used fake accounts to spread misleading claims that disparaged the safety of the Pfizer and AstraZeneca vaccines. One claimed AstraZeneca's shot would turn a person into a chimpanzee. Posted: 10 Aug 2021 10:00 PM PDT

When 18-year-old Edward Mallen killed himself, his father blamed the NHS, society – and himself. He founded the Zero Suicide Alliance to try to make such deaths a thing of the past

Not long before Christmas in 2014, Steve Mallen began to worry about the eldest of his three children. Edward, who had just turned 18, was good at everything. A gifted pianist, a talented sportsman and a nurturing big brother, he had secured a place at the University of Cambridge.

Then Edward stopped playing the piano. He became withdrawn and began to eat less and lose sleep. On 22 January 2015, he went to see the family's GP, near their home in a village outside Cambridge. He revealed that he had suicidal feelings and had begun to self-harm, something he felt too ashamed to share at home. He had no known history of mental health problems.

Elegantly wasted: has lockdown made booze dangerously aspirational?

Posted: 10 Aug 2021 02:00 AM PDT

Drinking at home was once a guilty pleasure. Now everyone from bored homeworkers to professional influencers is swapping cocktail recipes and photos of colourful aperitifs. Is gin o'clock turning into unhappy hour?

The shadow of a palm frond falls on a young woman in a bikini, holding an emerald-coloured cocktail in one manicured hand. A negroni glows from the depths of a darkened bar; a tray of fruit-laden glasses sits beside a swimming pool. The #cocktail hashtag on Instagram is a passport to a magical land of aspirational drinking, where everything comes garnished with rose petals and nobody ever seems to get hangovers.

Its inhabitants are a mix of amateur enthusiasts reviewing their latest discoveries, and professional "ginfluencers" making a living from creating lusciously photographed cocktail recipes or sponsored posts promoting this rhubarb gin or that new tequila. Colourful drinks are popular, says Inka Kukkamäki, a full-time drinks influencer whose @onthesauceagain account has 21,000 Instagram followers. "Something a bit interesting and unusual, or just something simple like a negroni – any kind of negroni twist becomes popular. The Italian aperitivo culture has really spread into the UK in the last year."

Life and death on the Atlantic migrant route. Plus, is it too late to halt global heating?
Get the magazine delivered to your home

When we think of Europe's migrant crisis, much of our attention understandably focuses on Mediterranean sea crossings from North Africa. But the Guardian Weekly's big story this week casts light on another deadly route, from Africa's western coast to the Spanish Atlantic territory of the Canary Islands. While official death rates are comparatively low, concerns are growing that undocumented fatalities on this extremely dangerous crossing could be many times higher. Sam Jones reports from Gran Canaria.

As extreme weather-fuelled wildfires continued to blaze in several parts of the world this week, a major new report from hundreds of top scientists laid bare the severe extent of our damage to the Earth's climate and the disaster looming if the slim chance to avert global heating above 1.5C is not grasped. Environment editor Damian Carrington analyses what the IPCC report means, while on our Opinion pages, the UK government's chief scientific adviser, Patrick Vallance, warns starkly that only a complete transformation of our societies can now arrest the warming process.

New Order review – a brutally unforgiving attack on Mexico’s super-rich

Posted: 11 Aug 2021 02:00 AM PDT

Michel Franco leaves no room for sympathy or redemption in this violent, cynical thriller, a vivid warning against the consequences of inequality

Michel Franco's film-making has always had an edge of cold steel; here again is his icy stab and lacerating chill. New Order is an ordeal nightmare, imagining a violent uprising against Mexico's super-rich. Connoisseurs of highbrow arthouse shock will note the fact that the film's titles and credits, with the letter E in reverse, show the influence of France's adulte terrible Gaspar Noé.

For decades, this has been the kind of provocative cinema that has faced opposition only in the easily ignored (and maybe secretly welcomed) outrage of conservative print media, but Franco has ironically faced his own uprising from online offence culture in Mexico when the trailer's depiction of vengeful darker-skinned revolutionaries was condemned as racist. Franco wound up having to offer an apology after mishandling the response and claiming his film was suffering reverse racism targeted at what he inelegantly called the "whitexican". It was an object lesson in how the "discourse" cannot absorb complexity or nuance.

In the Senate, independent senator Rex Patrick has moved a motion to hold an inquiry into the spy operation targeting the Timor-Leste cabinet in 2004, during treaty negotiations to carve up the resource-rich Timor Sea.

The spy operation came to light after an intelligence officer, Witness K, and his lawyer, Bernard Collaery, helped the Timor-Leste government mount a case against Australia in the international courts.

This is a very important issue. It's an important issue to make sure the Australian government has complied with the commands of the parliament in respect of collecting intelligence overseas. We also need to understand how we got into this situation where we'd done such a terrible thing to Timor-Leste.
