False claims about vaccines has proliferated on the social network, and on other sites including Twitter and YouTube, says president

Joe Biden says social media platforms such as Facebook "are killing people" for allowing disinformation about coronavirus vaccines to be posted on its platform, as the administration continued criticising the company.

"They're killing people. ... Look, the only pandemic we have is among the unvaccinated. And they're killing people," the US president told reporters at the White House on Friday, when asked about disinformation and what his message was to social media platforms such as Facebook.

Arizona counties find fewer than 200 possible voter fraud cases among 3m 2020 ballots

Posted: 16 Jul 2021 03:35 PM PDT

Findings undermine Trump's claims after Biden beat him by more than 10,000 votes in state

Arizona county election officials have identified fewer than 200 cases of potential voter fraud out of more than 3m ballots cast in last year's presidential election, undercutting Donald Trump's claims of a stolen election as his allies continue a disputed ballot review in the state's most populous county.

The 182 cases identified by the Associated Press represent instances where problems were clear enough that officials referred them for further review. So far, only four cases have led to charges, including those identified in a separate state investigation. No one has been convicted. No vote was counted twice.

Regulate business to tackle climate crisis, urges Mark Carney

Former Bank chief says governments must act as free markets will not reduce emissions alone

Governments must step up their regulation of businesses to tackle the climate crisis, the former Bank of England governor Mark Carney has urged, because the financial free markets will not reduce greenhouse gas emissions alone.

Carney, who left the Bank of England last year before the first Covid-19 lockdown, is now one of the most influential figures working on Cop26, the vital UN climate talks to be held in Glasgow in November. He is a UN envoy on climate change and Boris Johnson's finance adviser on the climate.

Oregon wildfire causes miles-high ‘fire clouds’ as flames grow

Posted: 16 Jul 2021 04:54 PM PDT

Pyrocumulus clouds viewable from 100 miles away as Bootleg fire grows beyond size of New York City

Smoke and heat from a huge wildfire in south-eastern Oregon are creating giant "fire clouds" over the blaze – dangerous columns of smoke and ash that can reach up to six miles (10km) in the sky and are visible from more than 100 miles (160km) away.

Authorities have put these clouds at the top of the list of the extreme fire behavior they are seeing amid the Bootleg fire, the largest wildfire burning in the US. The inferno grew on Friday to about 377 sq miles (976 sq km), an area larger than New York City, and was raging through a part of the American west that is enduring a historic drought.

The EU executive has been accused of "sacrificing forests" after it published proposals that would allow trees to continue to be burned for fuel.

Authorities are still struggling to understand the motives and masterminds behind the first killing of a Haitian president since 1915

Giovanna Romero remembers her husband, Mauricio, as a caring father who called home every night when he was out of the country on work. He did so as usual on the night of 6 July – from where, exactly, she isn't sure – to remind her and their children he loved them and tell them to take care.

"I'll call again soon," the retired Colombian soldier promised – a pledge he would be unable to keep.

Some pay smugglers to take them to Istanbul as withdrawal of US troops rekindles fears of civil war

Twenty-eight days into their journey out of Afghanistan, a woman and her five children are sitting in the shade near a bus station in Tatvan, a town on the shore of Lake Van in eastern Turkey.

She is waiting for a smuggler, who was paid in advance, to take the family to Istanbul. Tired and dirty, the younger children are playing in the dust and laughing; the youngest boy wants a piggyback. The smuggler is two days late.

Covid live news: Beta variant may evade vaccines, say experts as UK faces ‘protracted’ period of high infections rates

Posted: 17 Jul 2021 02:19 AM PDT

Beta variant of coronavirus spreading in France may evade vaccines, a scientist involved in advising the UK government has warned

Asked about whether full lockdown easing in England could lead to the emergence of a new more dangerous coronavirus variant, professor Mark Woolhouse said.

He told Times Radio:

It could be... but there are literally hundreds of variants around the world.

We don't know where the next variant of concern, one that will actually threaten public health, will come from.

In anticipation of an end to the Covid-19 pandemic, states and cities across the United States have enjoyed reopening once-shuttered communities for business, leisure, summer festivities and travel as life has returned to near-normal.

However, health officials remain on high alert given one ongoing obstacle to being finished with Covid-19: wide swaths of unvaccinated people in America that could allow the virus to further mutate and potentially spawn more transmissible and increasingly deadly variants.

International experts say 'unethical experiment' could allow vaccine-resistant variants to develop

Boris Johnson's plan to lift virtually all of England's pandemic restrictions on Monday is a threat to the world and provides fertile ground for the emergence of vaccine-resistant variants, international experts say.

Britain's position as a global transport hub would mean any new variant here would rapidly spread around the world, scientists and physicians warned at an emergency summit. They also expressed grave concerns about Downing Street's plans.

‘It was devastating’: what happens when therapy makes things worse?

Posted: 17 Jul 2021 01:00 AM PDT

Therapists are meant to help people change their lives, but those who behave badly may end up doing more harm than good

Courtney thought it was strange when her therapist asked her to follow him on Instagram. She had begun seeing Michael – a psychoanalyst who has written books and appeared on television – to treat her fear of flying in 2018 (both of their names, and those of all the patients in this article have been changed). After a few sessions, he suggested the pair connect on Instagram, where he posted everything from mindfulness tips to topless gym selfies. As she didn't use the app much, Courtney shrugged off her concerns and continued therapy, discussing her childhood abuse, depression, anxiety and sex life. Then, around five months after she had begun seeing him, Michael asked if she had been offended by a message he had sent.

What message? Courtney hadn't seen one, so Michael demanded that she check her Instagram inbox then and there. "All this sex talk has got me gagging for it," his message began, "I can't wait to get home and sort myself out."

Meera Sodha’s vegan recipe for tomato and turmeric kitchari | The new vegan

For those times when you crave nourishing comfort, this simple, risotto-like bowlful will definitely satisfy

Kitchari is a mixture of rice and lentils, cooked with usually only a few spices. It is the height of comfort for most Indians, and what most women in my family make when everyone's tastebuds need a rest. It's a vote for a simpler meal, the equivalent of a pleasant cycle ride down a winding country lane. In our family (the youngest being just one), it is one of only a few meals we can put in the centre of the table and eat together - as a cook, that is the ultimate comfort.

The podcaster talks to the online satirist about the joys of rhyming, the limits of macho culture and mocking Matt Hancock

George the Poet first met Munya Chawawa when he was invited on the latter's Reprezent 107.3 FM radio show to talk about his single, Follow the Leader, and recently launched podcast. Some three years on, and the careers of both men are transformed: George has left his label to become a spoken-word artist, activist and PhD student. His Have You Heard George's Podcast? has also reached Peabody award-winning heights, with a new series introducing his expansive theory about Black music's untapped socio-economic potential. Meanwhile, Chawawa has become Britain's foremost social-media satirist, laying into government corruption and grime beefs with equal alacrity, and earning a major label record deal in the guise of posh drill rapper, Unknown P. His latest viral video, the Matt Hancock-inspired Shaggy parody It Was Me, has 2.5m views on Twitter and counting.

Rail industry resists calls from passenger groups to release data on risk of contracting Covid on trains

Train operators have been urged to release research showing the risk of contracting Covid on trains, with the chances now believed to be substantially higher than the figure publicised by the rail industry last year.

The industry-funded Rail Research and Safety Board (RSSB) said in July 2020 that the risk was just one infection in 11,000 average journeys in Great Britain.

No man’s land: three people seeking asylum stuck in Cyprus’s buffer zone

The Cameroonians, who had 'no idea' they had jumped into the demilitarised area, have been trapped for almost two months

A few months after Grace Ngo flew into Turkish-occupied northern Cyprus from her native Cameroon, she decided to head "for the west". Smugglers pointed the student in the direction of the Venetian walls that cut through the heart of Nicosia, Europe's last divided capital.

A little before midnight on 24 May, Ngo leapt from the breakaway Turkish Cypriot republic into what she hoped would be the war-divided island's internationally recognised Greek south.

Casablanca Beats review – Morocco’s answer to Fame strikes a chord

Posted: 16 Jul 2021 11:19 AM PDT

A group of talented teens push the boundaries of their religious society by putting on a concert in Nabil Ayouch's earnest film

Franco-Moroccan director Nabil Ayouch has made a likable, high-energy youth movie that could almost be called the Moroccan answer to Fame and which features that time-honoured plot device: putting on a concert.

Using nonprofessionals playing docu-fictionalised versions of themselves, Ayouch has created a drama revolving around an arts centre for young people that he himself helped to set up in the tough district of Sidi Moumen, called by someone here the Bronx of Casablanca. The school includes a special programme called the Positive School of Hip-Hop. A crowd of smart, talented teens join the class and we watch as they find out the challenges, limits and opportunities of learning self-expression through western-style rap in a Muslim society.

US democracy faces a momentous threat says Joe Biden – but is he up for the fight?

Few in the audience applauding Joe Biden could have questioned the sincerity of his warning about a momentous threat to American democracy.

But they may have walked away with lingering doubts about his ability to meet the moment or answer fears that even the office of the presidency will be found politically impotent in the face of the challenge.

Restrictions on movement in three LGAs, limits on retail and pause on construction announced. This blog is now closed

That's where we're going to leave this blog for today. Here's a recap of the main stories of the day:

Australian politicians have expressed their anger after British rightwing commentator Katie Hopkins posted a video claiming she is in hotel quarantine in Sydney while tens of thousands of Australians are stranded overseas and unable to return home due to reduced flight caps.

The limit on the number of international arrivals coming into Australia via commercial flights was halved from 14 July over concerns from some state premiers about the infectiousness of the Delta variant of Covid-19.
