Judge refuses to admit new evidence that might have helped Meng Wanzhou avoid extradition to US

The prospect of a deepening diplomatic row between the US and China has grown after a Canadian judge refused to admit new evidence that might have helped the Huawei chief financial officer, Meng Wanzhou, avoid extradition to the US.

The arrest of Meng, the daughter of the Chinese telecommunication company's billionaire founder, has prompted a sharp deterioration in relations between Canada, the US and China. Soon after Meng's detention in Vancouver in December 2018, China arrested two Canadians in China: Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig.

Social distancing is feeding an appetite for a new generation of US-style drive-through restaurants

Drive-through restaurants used to be a US-inspired novelty but a big increase in custom during the pandemic means money is pouring into new UK sites, with even upmarket names looking to serve food through car windows for the first time.

New property research suggests that demand for drive-throughs has increased by 25% post-Covid with restaurant chains looking to open a total of 200 sites a year. The clamour comes as established names such as McDonald's and Burger King face competition from North American brands such as Tim Hortons, famous for its coffee and doughnuts, and burger chain Wendy's.

‘Where else can I make a month’s rent in two days?’: the unlikely stars of OnlyFans

Posted: 10 Jul 2021 02:30 AM PDT

Clarita needed to put herself through nursing school; Lex wanted to boost his income as a labourer – now they are erotic influencers on the subscriber site

In many ways, Lex Lederman, 28, is a classic American family man. He owns a farm in New Hampshire, where he lives with his wife and three children (plus a sizable company of chickens, pigs and geese). He's teaching himself home renovation (plumbing, electrics, how to lay floors) and regularly helps out with homeless food charities, refugee relief, and the local high school football team. But this lifestyle has only become possible since he quit his construction job for a full-time career on OnlyFans – the content subscription service where he uploads erotic pictures and videos for his predominantly gay male fanbase.

One of the biggest tech success stories of the last few years, OnlyFans was founded by British entrepreneur Tim Stokely in September 2016. "You could see the explosion of influencer marketing, but the influencers were getting paid via ad campaigns and product endorsements," he explained in an interview earlier this year. "Our thinking was always, OK, what if you could build a platform where it's similar to existing on social media, but with the key difference being the payment button?" Stokely is now worth an estimated $120m (£86m).

Lewis Hamilton: ‘Everything I’d suppressed came up – I had to speak out’

Posted: 10 Jul 2021 12:00 AM PDT

He's the most successful driver Formula One has ever seen, and its only Black star. Now Lewis Hamilton has a new mission: to change the sport that made him.

As Lewis Hamilton rose through the ranks of competitive go-karting, his father, Anthony, told him: "Always do your talking on the track." Lewis had a lot to talk about. Bullying and racial taunts were a consistent feature of his childhood in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, a new town 30 miles north of London; his dad taught him the best response was to excel at his sport.

The trouble was he didn't have many people to talk to about what he was going through. Lewis is mixed-race, born to a white mother, Carmen Larbalestier, who raised him until he was 12, when he went to live with his Grenadian-British father, from whom she had separated. "My mum was wonderful," he tells me. "She was so loving. But she didn't fully understand the impact of the things I was experiencing at school. The bullying and being picked on. And my dad was quite tough, so I didn't tell him too much about those experiences. As a kid I remember just staying quiet about it because I didn't feel anyone really understood. I just kept it to myself." Sport offered him an outlet. "I did boxing because I needed to channel the pain," he says. "I did karate because I was being beaten up and I wanted to be able to defend myself."

FinTok: how TikTok is helping young people use cash wisely

Posted: 10 Jul 2021 03:00 AM PDT

It's not just jokes and emojis – the video-sharing platform can help users learn how to manage money

Sea shanties and viral dance trends have helped make TikTok a hit since the start of the pandemic. In 2020, the social media app, which allows users to create and share one or more 60-second films soundtracked with music clips, surpassed 2bn global downloads.

In the financial world, TikTok has a reputation for promoting volatile cryptocurrencies and activist investing – interest in Dogecoin and GameStop has been fuelled by the platform. But, beyond the jokes and rocket emojis being shared by some users, there is a wealth of practical personal finance videos that are teaching young people how to use their money better.

‘We didn’t know the rules we were rebelling against’: how The Office changed comedy

Posted: 09 Jul 2021 11:00 PM PDT

As Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant's sitcom turns 20, top comics and people behind the scenes explain how it rewired British humour

It wasn't the first painstakingly naturalistic sitcom on British TV (see: The Royle Family). It wasn't the first comedy to revolve around the cringeworthy antics of a delusional, middle-aged "entertainer" (see: I'm Alan Partridge). It wasn't even the first mockumentary about the banalities of work (see: People Like Us). Yet by marrying all those things together – and so much more – The Office managed to raze the comedy landscape, establishing a whole new language and style for the British sitcom. Twenty years after it debuted, the influence of Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant's series about the long-suffering employees at a regional paper merchants and their incredibly unprofessional boss, David Brent, is still everywhere; nothing since has had a comparable impact. How did a sitcom that prioritised footage of photocopiers over proper jokes remake comedy in its image?

US community colleges see ‘chilling’ decline in enrollment during pandemic

Experts worried about long-term impact on low-income and non-white Americans, populations community colleges tend to serve

David Ramirez, a student at Pasadena City College in Pasadena, California, struggled with balancing work and classes during the pandemic. Ramirez, who works at Starbucks, worked at least 30 hours a week in addition to his classes.

He wasn't alone. The number of students enrolled in community colleges – local educational establishments that offer two-year courses and are often seen as an affordable stepping stone to higher education – was down 9.5% this past spring, about 476,000 fewer students than in spring 2020, according to National Student Clearinghouse data released last month.

Why were Colombian guns for hire allegedly key to Haiti assassination plot?

Posted: 09 Jul 2021 02:22 PM PDT

The hit squad that killed President Jovenel Moïse is alleged to be largely drawn from veterans of Colombia's civil conflicts

When Manuel Antonio Grosso Guarín jetted into Punta Cana's tourist-clogged airport early last month on Avianca Flight 252, immigration officials are unlikely to have given the 41-year-old Colombian a second glance. Visitors from around the globe flock to this Dominican resort town each week in search of sun, sea and Caribbean sands.

Grosso appears to have had rather different plans, though: to sneak over the border into neighbouring Haiti and help assassinate that country's president.
