US election: Trump predicts 'great win' at last rally as Biden tells him to 'pack his bags' Posted: 02 Nov 2020 11:33 PM PST President dismisses polls showing he is behind as Lady Gaga stumps for Biden, telling people to 'go out and vote' Defiant to the last, Donald Trump has made a final bid to save his presidency with a midnight rally in battleground Michigan where, sporting a red "Make America great again" cap, he predicted "one of the greatest wins in the history of politics". But even as the US president was airing grievances about the Russia investigation, impeachment, and Hillary Clinton at 12.15am, his rival, Joe Biden, tweeted a warning: "If we give Donald Trump another four years in the White House, he will forever alter the character of our nation. We can't let that happen." Continue reading... |

Exactly one week after election day, they might succeed. Continue reading... |
Johnny Depp’s defeat in libel case hailed by domestic violence charities Posted: 02 Nov 2020 10:48 AM PST The trial highlighted tactics used to silence and discredit victims, say campaigners Johnny Depp's defeat in the London libel courts has been hailed by domestic violence charities as a victory that should encourage other victims to come forward and seek justice. The judgment on Monday by the high court that the Sun was justified in describing the Pirates of the Caribbean star as a "wife beater" was welcomed by lawyers and campaign groups who support those who have experienced domestic abuse. Latest coronavirus lockdowns spark protests across Europe Posted: 02 Nov 2020 07:47 AM PST Libertarians and conspiracy theorists join business owners in opposing new restrictions Fresh lockdowns to stem the spread of coronavirus have sparked sometimes violent protests in several European countries, fuelled both by ideological fury at new government-imposed restrictions and fears of economic hardship. As the number of infections surge and hospitals and intensive care units fill up, countries including Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Spain have once more introduced tough curbs on movement and gatherings. China changes school curriculum to reflect Beijing's positive Covid narrative Posted: 02 Nov 2020 10:23 PM PST Content added to classes will say the state 'aways put the life and safety of its people first' Chinese government-endorsed content about the pandemic and the "fighting spirit" of the country's response will be added to school curriculum, the country's ministry of education has said, in a move to enshrine the country's narrative of success against the virus. The content will be added to elementary and middle school classes in biology, health and physical education, history, and literature, and will "help students understand the basic fact that the Party and the state always put the life and safety of its people first", the ministry said on Wednesday. Stop blowing up bombs on sea floor, say whale campaigners Posted: 02 Nov 2020 11:00 PM PST Wartime relics need to be cleared for wind farms but explosions can kill cetaceans The detonation of wartime bombs left on the seafloor around the UK must end to stop the deaths of whales and dolphins, campaigners say. The offshore wind industry is expanding rapidly and this may lead to a sharp rise in such explosions as the seafloor is cleared before construction. A quieter "burning" technique is already available, say the campaigners. Continue reading... |
Markets rally as investors brace for US election – business live Posted: 03 Nov 2020 02:29 AM PST Rolling coverage of the latest economic and financial news
Back in London, Britain's FTSE 100 index is on track for its best day in almost two months as the rally continues. The blue-chip index of leading UK and multinational companies is now up 104 points, or 1.8%, at 5757 points - a one-week high. "A clear election result would eliminate one of the three current major market concerns: the surging pandemic, election uncertainties and prospects for new fiscal stimulus. A fast and uncontested election result would be positive for stock markets and negative for the dollar and bonds irrespective of who wins. A blue sweep with Joe Biden winning the presidency and Democrats gaining control of the Senate (and keeping control of the House) would provide least resistance to a large-scale fiscal stimulus, which would be more positive for stocks and negative for bonds and the dollar. The worst-case scenario for markets would be an extended period of uncertainty resulting from the election being too close to call, leading to reprocessing of ballots and possibly contested election results with neither party admitting defeat. Such a scenario would be negative for risky assets and positive for the dollar and bond markets."
US stocks are expected to rise when trading begins on Wall Street, in around four hours:

Some 65,000 people have passed through New Zealand's quarantine hotels since the borders closed in mid-March. T-cell Covid immunity 'present in adults six months after first infection' Posted: 02 Nov 2020 06:41 AM PST Study suggests white blood cell levels higher in people who had symptoms Cellular (T-cell) immunity against the virus that causes Covid-19 is likely to be present within most adults six months after primary infection, with levels considerably higher in patients with symptoms, a study suggests. The data offers another piece of the puzzle that could be key to understanding whether previous Sars-CoV-2 infections – the virus behind Covid-19 – can prevent reinfection, and if so, for how long. The fall of Johnny Depp: how the world's most beautiful movie star turned very ugly Posted: 02 Nov 2020 10:00 PM PST In the 1990s, he was a different kind of film star – eloquent, artistic and cool. But this week, with the loss of his court case against the Sun, the dream has decisively soured Johnny Depp is "a wife-beater". This is the verdict of the UK courts. Just writing that sentence feels genuinely shocking, and yet, by now perhaps, it should not. For a start, the allegation that he was physically abusive to his ex-wife Amber Heard emerged more than four years ago, after she applied for a temporary restraining order against him following their divorce, citing domestic abuse. It should also not be a shock, given how many other hugely famous men have been accused of abusing women. Sean Connery was alleged to have beaten his first wife and frequently defended hitting women. His death this weekend sparked online arguments about how much the coverage should focus on the professional achievements of a man who repeatedly insisted it was fine to hit women, "if the woman is a bitch, or hysterical, or bloody-minded continually", as he said in 1965. But Depp is a very different figure from Connery. The latter represented alpha masculinity and aggressive sexuality. No one ever said it explicitly, but Connery's defences for beating women fit in, on some level, with his image, and so that side of him was never going to be a problem with his audience. Depp, however, represented something else. He sued the Sun for defamation when it described him as "a wife-beater", something Connery would never have done, and it's why for a certain kind of fan (me), this feels like the death of yet another childhood hero. Life during wartime: how west Belfast became the frontline of the Troubles Posted: 02 Nov 2020 10:00 PM PST Acts of state violence, and repeated official denials, drove some Northern Irish Catholics to armed resistance. But not everyone in west Belfast supported the IRA's methods When Johnston Brown, a 27-year-old detective with the Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) – the overwhelmingly protestant police force of Northern Ireland – volunteered in late 1977 to serve at Andersonstown police barracks in Catholic west Belfast, he was given a few pieces of very clear advice. He should never stop at a red light in west Belfast if it was safe to drive on. He should assume that any pedestrians who wanted to cross the road may be part of a trap – members of the security forces had lost their lives this way. Nor should Brown ever indicate that he was turning into a police barracks. He should approach with the flow of the traffic and then swerve suddenly in through the gates, to reduce the risk of being shot, and to make it harder for anyone to make a note of his registration number. And if he were unfortunate enough to fall into the hands of gunmen, he must attempt to shoot his way out – never try to talk himself out of trouble. "I remember clearly," Brown wrote in 2005, "one older detective sergeant, a man in his late 40s, telling me sternly: 'Here you have at most between five and eight minutes at the door of any house you may call at on an enquiry. You have that much time to conduct the enquiry and get the hell out of those areas, because five to eight minutes is all the time it takes for the Provos [the Provisional IRA] to get hold of a weapon and a volunteer who will be only too keen to kill you before you conduct your enquiry and leave.'" Tsai Chin: 'What was it like being in bed with Sean Connery? Fine' Posted: 02 Nov 2020 10:00 PM PST From Bond girl to badass grandmas, Tsai Chin has had an extraordinary career. She talks about her battles with racism, predatory producers – and farting leopards 'I have lived on my own since 1963," says Tsai Chin down the phone from her home in Los Angeles. "It doesn't mean I haven't had a sex life." But it does mean that the 88-year-old actor brings something special to her latest role as a beguilingly irascible, chain-smoking widow who faces down triad thugs over stolen money in the comedy Lucky Grandma. Apart from the smoking, Grandma Wong is my new role model. "I'm tough but my heart is very soft," she says. And that is the key to Grandma Wong, a woman who projects to the world the opposite of what she is inside. In the film, she has a shrine to her late husband in her meagre Chinatown apartment in New York. She's alone and impoverished but isn't quite ready to give up her independence and move in with her sweet if bougie son in his brownstone. Continue reading... |
'Finding them is not rocket science': the hunt for the Rwandan genocide fugitives Posted: 02 Nov 2020 09:00 PM PST Arrest of Félicien Kabuga in Paris has energised search for others accused of playing role in 1994 genocide No one paid much attention to the stooped old man who lived in the third-floor apartment of the comfortable but unexceptional block in Asnières-sur-Seine, a suburb on the outskirts of Paris. He shuffled off for his daily walks, and muttered inaudibly to those who greeted him. Then one morning in late May, 84-year-old Félicien Kabuga's neighbours woke up to the startling news that they had been living next to an alleged mass killer. Continue reading... |
Watch Dogs Legion review – fight fascism in a futuristic London Posted: 03 Nov 2020 12:00 AM PST PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 5 (forthcoming), Xbox Series X/S (forthcoming); Ubisoft Video games have become extraordinarily adept at simulating geography, from Assassin's Creed's detailed, architecturally accurate takes on ancient Egypt or 18th-century Paris to Microsoft Flight Simulator's virtual simulacrum of the Earth's surface. But they are still no good at simulating people, and their cities are populated with reactive automatons who forget you tried to run them over two seconds ago. This makes Watch Dogs Legion's attempt to simulate the entire population of a futuristic, technocratic London one of the most ambitious things a game has tried in years. Walk from Camden to Nine Elms and every person you see has a name, a cluster of attributes (gambler, fashion expert, paramedic, low mobility) and a custom-generated voice and appearance. You can recruit any of them to your hacker resistance movement and step into their shoes. I played most of Watch Dogs Legion as a construction worker named Hassan. He has no particular special skills; he can summon a cargo drone and ride it up to rooftops, but he hasn't got any useful weapons or technical expertise. I picked him because he was nearby, and I liked his haircut and accent: not too EastEnders, not too plummy. But then I accidentally took Hassan into the bowels of one of Watch Dogs Legion's autocratic tech giants, on a mission that I thought would be easy but turned out to involve hiding in a vent from heavily armed private security guards while using a spiderbot to steal encrypted information. Hassan barely escaped with his life. I became rather attached to him after that. Continue reading... |

How the Vienna shooting unfolded: final hours of freedom punctured by terror Posted: 03 Nov 2020 02:49 AM PST On a mild evening in the Austrian capital, the bars and restaurants of the city centre were busy before lockdown – but at 8pm gunshots rang out Monday night in Vienna was supposed to be a last chance at freedom. The weather was mild, and as the hours ticked down before a nationwide coronavirus curfew largely shut down the city for a month, the bars and restaurants of the "Bermuda triangle" – a network of narrow, fashionable lanes in the old city's 1st district – were busy. US election day 2020: voters stream to the polls to elect the next president – live updates Posted: 03 Nov 2020 02:51 AM PST
Dana Milbank wrote an op-ed last night for the Washington Post, setting out how high he thinks the stakes are today, in a piece titled: Vote as if our way of life depends on it. It does. It opened with a bleak summing up of events over the last few days: Election Day is here, and Americans have reason to be tense. President Trump has told confidants he'll declare victory Tuesday night, even before the votes get counted. Federal authorities were building a "non-scalable" fence around the White House Monday to protect a man who refuses to commit to a peaceful transfer of power. The FBI said Sunday it is investigating a convoy of Trump supporters who apparently attempted to run a Biden campaign bus off a Texas interstate; Trump praised the perpetrators and condemned the FBI.
If you missed it yesterday, there's still time to catch up on Monday's Today In Focus podcast which was devoted to discussion of Joe Biden. New Yorker journalist Evan Osnos, author of a new Biden biography tells Anushka Asthana that for a Democrat who has been in the centre of the party for decades, including as Barack Obama's vice-president, he is now running on one of the most radical platforms his party has ever stood on. The women who risk their lives to deliver Pakistan's polio vaccines Posted: 02 Nov 2020 11:45 PM PST As activists target female vaccinators, Pakistan remains one of only two countries worldwide not to have eradicated polio Nasreen Bibi never saw the face of her killer. The 44-year-old had just finished work for the day, vaccinating children against polio in Chaman, Pakistan. As she and her co-worker, Rashida Bibi (no relation), stood waiting for a rickshaw home, a motorcycle skidded up in front of them carrying two masked men. The men did not utter a word, but through the churned up dust that filled the air, Rashida remembers seeing the raised pistol, hearing the shots and feeling the pain as the bullets hit her hands, her thighs, her back and her stomach. Rashida fell to the ground and felt Nasreen crumple beside her, blood pouring from a dark hole in her forehead. Continue reading... |
Rotten river: life on one of the world’s most polluted waterways – photo essay Posted: 01 Nov 2020 11:45 PM PST Indonesia's Citarum is relied upon by millions, but decades of pollution have choked it with chemicals and rubbish
The smell is the first thing that hits you on the banks of the Citarum River in West Java, Indonesia. The odour is dense: rubbish rotting in hot sun mixed in with an acrid tone of chemical waste. Some 9 million people live in close contact with the river, where levels of faecal coliform bacteria are more than 5,000 times mandatory limits, according to the findings of the Asian Development Bank in 2013. Muammer Celik, one of the firefighters who saved Elif, said that when he reached her, she was lying motionless, and he thought she was dead. But as he reached out to wipe the dust off her face, the girl grabbed his thumb. 'She opened her eyes. I froze,' he said. |

Which swing states could decide the US election? – video explainer Posted: 02 Nov 2020 05:29 AM PST Joe Biden is leading Donald Trump in the national polls for the presidential election, but that doesn't guarantee the Democratic candidate victory. Hillary Clinton also had a clear lead over Trump in the polls for almost the entire 2016 campaign and ended up losing in the electoral college. Because the presidential voting system assigns each state a number of electoral college votes, which go to the state's victor regardless of the margin of victory (with the exception of Nebraska and Maine), a handful of swing states will probably decide the election and be targeted heavily by campaigners. The Guardian's Lauren Gambino examines how the race is developing in the areas that could decide the election Continue reading... |
