Coronavirus live news: England extends use of face coverings as Brazil death toll nears 100,000 Posted: 08 Aug 2020 02:20 AM PDT City of Preston urges young people 'don't kill granny' as cases rise in the Philippines, Australia and Italy
People in Preston, northern England, have told the PA news agency that they expect many of their neighbours to ignore renewed coronavirus restrictions imposed in the city. A ban on households mixing in homes or gardens in large parts of the north of England was extended into Preston from midnight and will stay in place at least until they are reviewed on 14 August. You see the older people wearing masks but the younger ones don't. The problem is in the pubs and they don't wear masks there. I was happy the restrictions were brought in because I think we do need the police to get involved. The pubs around us were still 30 or 40 deep outside last night. It won't mean any changes for us because we haven't been seeing family anyway but I saw some reaction online last night and I think a lot of people aren't going to listen to it.
As of 8 Aug 2020, 12pm, we have preliminarily confirmed an additional 132 cases of COVID-19 infection in Singapore. https://t.co/Qovgu58FcG Continue reading... |
'We're making it up as we go along': how Trump's America failed the Covid test Posted: 08 Aug 2020 12:30 AM PDT Coronavirus has been allowed to run amok by governors and the president, spreading inexorably into the rural heart of America A letter landed on the desk of the governor of Georgia, Brian Kemp, this week that given the public health catastrophe swirling all around him might give him pause. His state is one of 21 across the US that have been placed by the White House coronavirus taskforce in the "red zone", indicating the disease is now so prevalent that immediate restrictions must be imposed to avoid dire consequences. Kemp, a Republican governor and Donald Trump ally, has adopted a controversial approach to Covid-19. Since early July the virus has roared across his state, with new infections rising sharply to top a devastating tally of 182,000. ‘The virus piggybacked on racism’: why did Covid-19 hit BAME families so hard? Posted: 07 Aug 2020 11:00 PM PDT Ida lost two brothers in 10 days, and Ken's teenage sweetheart died at 44. Now, they're looking for answers Sir Oyaseh Ivowi sits in front of a poster of two of his three boys. Olume, the older brother, hovers over Isi; both wear traditional Nigerian dress. Underneath are the words: "Gone too soon, but not forgotten. Olume Godfrey Ivowi, 7 November 1973 to 10 April 2020. Isi Benjamin Emitsemu Ivowi, 17 November 1985 to 19 April 2020." Olume, 46, and Isi, 34, died in Luton and Milton Keynes respectively. Their passing made headlines because it was so shocking: two brothers killed by Covid-19 in such a short space of time. A third brother, Osi, also caught the virus, but has recovered. Continue reading... |
'Uncertainty made me struggle': Covid puts financial stress on young people Posted: 08 Aug 2020 01:00 AM PDT More 18- 24-year-olds are anxious about careers as coronavirus hits jobs and mental health Raymond Christie is having sleepless nights. The 18-year-old is worrying about how difficult it will be to find work opportunities as he anticipates an upcoming recession. Christie left school at 16 with no qualifications and went into training on a construction scheme that went into administration during the pandemic. Since then, he has had to rely on his family for financial support. "My mental health has never been as bad as it has been over the last few months since my mid-teens," he says. "Losing my place in something that I really enjoyed doing and the overwhelming feeling of uncertainty has made me struggle with deep moods of depression and boredom. Most days, I don't want to do anything or get up from my bed and I find it hard to motivate myself with nothing to do." Continue reading... |

India plans to fell ancient forest to create 40 new coalfields Posted: 08 Aug 2020 12:00 AM PDT Narendra Modi's dream of a 'self-reliant India' comes at a terrible price for its indigenous population Over the past decade, Umeshwar Singh Amra has witnessed his homeland descend into a battleground. The war being waged in Hasdeo Arand, a rich and biodiverse Indian forest, has pitted indigenous people, ancient trees, elephants and sloths against the might of bulldozers, trucks and hydraulic jacks, fighting with a single purpose: the extraction of coal. Yet under a new "self-reliant India" plan by the prime minister, Narendra Modi, to boost the economy post-Covid-19 and reduce costly imports, 40 new coalfields in some of India's most ecologically sensitive forests are to be opened up for commercial mining. 'Most sophisticated tunnel in US history' discovered between Mexico and Arizona Posted: 07 Aug 2020 12:54 PM PDT Although it's not clear exactly what the structure was intended for, it had ventilation, a rail system and extensive reinforcement An incomplete tunnel found stretching from Mexico to Arizona appears to be "the most sophisticated tunnel in US history", authorities said. The tunnel, intended for smuggling, ran from a neighborhood in San Luis Río Colorado, Mexico, to San Luis, Arizona, where it stopped short of reaching the surface. It was built in an area that's not conducive to tunnels because of the terrain, and it had a ventilation system, water lines, electrical wiring, a rail system and extensive reinforcement, federal officials say. What was the best summer ever for big-budget film? Posted: 08 Aug 2020 02:00 AM PDT In a world where big cinema releases are all but extinct, we go back in time to find the greatest movie summer of them all Planet-killing asteroids! Alien invasions! Sneaky dinosaurs! These were the existential threats that 45 years of summer blockbusters had pre-programmed us to expect. Instead, something rather more insidious wiped 2020's May-to-August movie slate clean, depriving audiences of their usual buffet of unmissable communal spectacles and/or over-marketed idiotainment. Starved of popcorn entertainment, it seems natural to look back hungrily. So what were the most explosive movie summers of the past? Continue reading... |
Coronavirus: just 10 enforcement orders issued for breach of UK quarantine rules Posted: 08 Aug 2020 02:08 AM PDT Fears measures may be extended to France, but little enforcement appears to be taking place Just 10 enforcement orders have been issued to people for breaking quarantine rules after arriving in the UK, it has emerged, as fears of an extension of the measures to other parts of Europe led to a surge in last-minute enquires from customers desperate to get away before any further crackdown. This week travellers arriving from Belgium, Andorra and the Bahamas were told they would have to quarantine for 14 days following a rise in Covid-19 cases in those countries. Spain and Luxembourg had already been removed from the travel corridor list. Continue reading... |
Behind the Beirut explosion lies the lawless world of international shipping | Laleh Khalili Posted: 08 Aug 2020 01:59 AM PDT The disaster has roots in a global network of maritime capital and legal chicanery designed to protect businesses at any cost At about 6pm on Tuesday, a seemingly small warehouse fire near Beirut port's grain silos began to fizz with red sparks. The sparks led to an enormous explosion, a mushroom cloud of water and debris, and a column of orange-red and black smoke rising out of the warehouse. The shockwave pulverised nearby warehouses and apartment blocks, lifted doors off their hinges and shattered windows several miles away. At the time of writing, 154 people have been reported killed over 5,000 injured and 300,000 have been left homeless. Dozens of people are still missing. Continue reading... |
‘The Squad keeps getting bigger’: progressive Democrats see wave of victories Posted: 08 Aug 2020 01:00 AM PDT Wins mark a dramatic shift from the spate of losses the progressive wing suffered over the last year Progressive Democrats are enjoying a wave of victories in federal primaries across the country with some especially notable triumphs for Black activist candidates. Those successes, candidates and strategists say, are due to a mixture of broad energy from the Black Lives Matter movement, failure of conventional policy remedies to meet the moment and a rock-solid infrastructure of progressive organizations. 'Wishful thinking': the dangers of UK hype during Covid-19 Posted: 07 Aug 2020 07:14 AM PDT From the UK government over-promising on testing to scientific spin on a vaccine, realism is in short supply
They were billed by the UK health secretary, Matt Hancock, as "lifesaving" and "hugely beneficial": two new coronavirus tests that claim to deliver results within 90 minutes, promoted enthusiastically to the public with the help of front pages in the Times, the i and the Daily Mail, which declared they would "transform the war on corona". The suppliers are little known, evaluation data is not yet available, and it is unclear how effective the tests are outside hospital settings, not least because taking blood or swabs is difficult for non-medics. Europe treats undocumented children with less care than livestock | Michele Levoy Posted: 07 Aug 2020 03:30 AM PDT Countless young people are being pushed to Europe's margins by hardline border and migration policies We don't know how many undocumented children are living in Europe. We don't even know how many children are currently locked up in detention because of their own or their parents' immigration status. While the European Union requires precise data collection in numerous sectors – we know how many dairy cows there are in the EU and the UK, for example – the lack of data and visibility of undocumented children seems a political, rather than a technical, void. Being born in Europe is not enough to prevent a child from becoming undocumented, if they are born to undocumented parents. No European country grants citizenship solely based on birth in the national territory. Others in the ranks of the undocumented moved to Europe as kids and have spent most of their lives here. For them, Europe is home. But policy hasn't caught up with this reality. Continue reading... |
