Unite's national officer for health, Jackie Williams, said:

Nursing staff and other allied health professionals have reacted with anger to being overlooked when pay rises were given to many in the public sector last month and the Government not hearing the health trade unions' call to bring their pay rise forward from April 2021.

Last week, health workers marched to Downing Street to vent their anger that all their efforts during the pandemic, which has claimed so many of their colleagues' lives, have appeared to be ignored when it comes to recognition in their pay packets.

'A matter of when not if': New Zealand begins battle against 'Covid fatigue'

Posted: 05 Aug 2020 01:00 PM PDT

Spooked by outbreaks in Australia and Hong Kong, authorities are urging 'constant vigilance'

Customers stream into a central Wellington cafe, past a QR code posted on the door that allows people to check in on the New Zealand government's Covid-19 tracing app. None pause to pull out their phones. Down the footpath outside, crosses of tape – denoting physical distancing measures for shoppers that ended months ago – feel like a reminder of a bad dream.

New Zealand has attained the status of one of the world's safest countries when it comes to the coronavirus; there is no known community transmission in the country and life has largely returned to normal. But with one eye on nations where the virus was once quashed before spiralling out of control again, officials and the government have changed their language in recent days in order to fight a new battle – this time against complacency.

Coronavirus live news: Germany tightens testing regime as daily cases rise above 1,000

Posted: 06 Aug 2020 02:56 AM PDT

Germany reports over 1,000 new infections for first time since May; Philippines reports over 3,500 new cases

New cases of coronavirus in Germany have risen above 1,000 for the first time since May, causing the government to tighten the testing regime for travellers returning from risk regions.

On Thursday health minister Jens Spahn warned that the accelerating pace of new infections was a cause for concern and while authorities could manage the current rate of new infections, the trajectory was a worry.

I understand if people are fed up, but they should resist the deceptive idea that the pandemic was never all that serious.

The Philippines has recorded another jump in coronavirus cases to overtake neighbouring Indonesia as the country with the highest number of confirmed Covid-19 infections in East Asia. Reuters reports:

A recent surge in cases of the virus in and around the capital, Manila, has pushed authorities to reimpose a lockdown affecting around a quarter of the country's 107 million people.

75 years after bombings, witnesses struggle to remind us of the horrors of nuclear weapons

As they mark 75 years since their cities were destroyed in an instant, the ageing men and women who bore witness to the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki are struggling to remind the world of the horror of nuclear weapons.

Keiko Ogura was eight years old when the Enola Gay, a US B-29 bomber, dropped a 16-kilotonne nuclear bomb on Hiroshima at 8.15 am on 6 August 1945.

Facebook removes Trump post over false Covid-19 claim for first time

Posted: 05 Aug 2020 07:06 PM PDT

Video in which Trump wrongly said kids were 'almost immune' from illness also prompted Twitter to ban president's re-election campaign account

Facebook has removed a post from Donald Trump's page for spreading false information about the coronavirus, a first for the social media company that has been harshly criticized for repeatedly allowing the president to break its content rules.

The post included video of Trump falsely asserting that children were "almost immune from Covid-19" during an appearance on Fox News. There is evidence to suggest that children who contract Covid-19 generally experience milder symptoms than adults do. However, they are not immune, and some children have become severely ill or died from the disease.

'Why can't I be legal anywhere?': exploited and left stateless by Sweden

Rahman arrived as an unaccompanied minor. Abused and deported, his future is uncertain but his European dream intact

Rahman was out buying food when Spanish police handed him a €500 fine for breaking coronavirus restrictions. "I'll pay this as soon as I get a residence permit," he told them. He laughs as he recalls the incident. "Look how thin I've become, I weigh only 57 kilos," he says. The 21-year-old Palestinian shows his skinny 5ft 7in frame over the webcam.

He speaks in Swedish mixed with Norwegian expressions – his capacity in both languages is testament to the nearly five years spent between the countries as an adolescent. They were formative years, where he learned that even apparently kind gestures such as the offer of a place to stay could open the door to unfathomable cruelty.

How the Navajo Nation won a hard-earned political voice in Utah

New districts were adopted just in time for the 2018 midterm elections and could impact November's election

This story was published in collaboration with the Navajo Times

Driving south from Moab, the desert gives way to rolling piñon and juniper forest interspersed with farm fields and pastures. The two towns, Monticello and Blanding, are plaited neatly on the "Mormon grid", streets running exactly north-south and east-west, with equal-size blocks in between. The homes are modest but neat and well kept. Most of the people are white, descendants of Mormon pioneers who settled here in the late 19th century. They vote mostly Republican.

Shinzo Abe accused of going awol as Japan tackles Covid surge

Posted: 06 Aug 2020 02:49 AM PDT

PM acclaimed Japan's response as a model for the world, but has been largely silent amid record case rises

After Japan appeared to have brought the coronavirus outbreak under control in late May, the prime minister, Shinzo Abe, acclaimed his country's response as a "model" for the rest of the world. It had avoided an explosion in cases, he said, and without the compulsory lockdowns imposed in Europe and the US.

Abe lifted the seven-week state of emergency, enabling bars and restaurants that had voluntarily closed to reopen for business. Plans were made to allow indoor events with up to 5,000 attendees, and the media trailed the launch of an economy-boosting nationwide tourism campaign.

Victorian officials dismiss claim of 'secret modelling' showing daily Covid cases of 1,100 next week

Deputy chief health officer Allen Cheng says he's seen no data that matches the figures splashed on the front page of the Australian

Victoria's deputy chief health officer has dismissed claims the state has "secret modelling" that shows daily Covid-19 cases rising to 1,100 by the end of next week, saying he has seen no such data from state or federal authorities.

The claim was splashed on the front page of the Australian on Thursday in a story that said the Victorian government's "own estimates" showed the number was likely to stay above 1,000 for eight days, and "the average number of new cases is not expected to decline until the last week of August".

New Zealand's 4% unemployment rate masks a deeper Covid hit to the labour market | Brad Olsen

Hundreds of thousands want more work, and the drop in hours worked – largely as a result of coronavirus – is the biggest in 30 years

New Zealand's unemployment rate has implausibly fallen to 4.0% in the June 2020 quarter, presenting a strong picture of the labour market even as the Covid-19 pandemic takes an axe to the global economy.

You'd be forgiven for thinking that this announcement is a sign of good news. Instead, the release of June's labour market statistics presented a still-sobering view of the country's economy.
