Coronavirus live news: WHO reports worrying infection trends in southern Europe and Balkans Posted: 22 Jul 2020 02:46 AM PDT Trump urges people to wear masks; Victoria state reports 484 new cases, higher than previous national record; Mike Pompeo attacks WHO
Spain's Tourism Minister Reyes Maroto said on Wednesday a resurgence in coronavirus cases in Catalonia was coming under control and she hoped there would be no need for France to close the border. Tourism accounts for about 12% of Spain's economic output. With the pandemic wreaking havoc on the summer season ministers in Madrid have voiced concern after French Prime Minister Jean Castex said on Sunday that he was not ruling out closing the border.
Worrying trends of coronavirus infection are emerging in southern Europe and in the Balkan region, Mike Ryan, head of the World Health Organization's emergencies programme, said on Wednesday. "Obviously the Americas is clearly still the major hot spot, North, Central and South America, but we have disease beginning to accelerate in Africa," Ryan told the Newstalk radio station in his native Ireland. The proof is in the sewage: hundreds of Yosemite visitors may have had coronavirus Posted: 22 Jul 2020 02:00 AM PDT No one had tested positive via nasal swabs, but researchers' investigation tells a different story Yosemite national park officials suspect that hundreds of visitors this summer may have had Covid-19 thanks to an unorthodox approach – testing sewage. The San Francisco Chronicle reported last week that the county health department has been collecting untreated wastewater flowing from the idyllic Yosemite Valley for testing. Prior to this effort, according to the Chronicle, no one had tested positive for the virus through nasal swab testing at the park's health clinic. Scientists at a lab called Biobot Analytics in Cambridge, Massachusetts, have examined the sewage water to determine if there are traces of genetic material from Sars-CoV-2, the coronavirus that causes Covid-19, in the human feces. From the traces in a given sample, they can estimate how many people passing through Yosemite might be infected with Covid-19 at that time. Continue reading... |
'We suffer in silence': coronavirus takes heavy toll on Brazil's army of gravediggers Posted: 22 Jul 2020 02:45 AM PDT Alcoholism and depression 'part and parcel' for those who bury the bodies of Covid-19 victims – more than 80,000 so far Miguel Braga has done many things in life: sold lollipops, hawked cleaning products, guarded cars. This year, as Covid-19 shook Brazil, he turned his hand to burying bodies. "Someone has to do it," said the 30-year-old father-of-two, who earns £200 ($250) a month carving 2m x 1m resting places into the caramel coloured soils of Latin America's largest cemetery. World is legally obliged to pressure China on Uighurs, leading lawyers say Posted: 21 Jul 2020 11:27 PM PDT Exclusive: Sanctions on China and companies operating there, along with use of treaty agreements, can bring Beijing to account, British barristers argue The international community is legally obliged to take action on China's alleged abuse of Uighur and other Turkic minorities, a prominent group of British lawyers has said, suggesting nations use sanctions, corporate accountability mechanisms, and international treaties preventing racial discrimination to pressure Beijing. China's refusal to be held legally accountable for the widespread and documented allegations did not absolve the global community of responsibility, the Bar Human Rights Committee of England and Wales (BHRC) said in a report released on Wednesday. Mary Trump on her Uncle Donald: ‘I used to feel compassion for him. That became impossible’ Posted: 22 Jul 2020 02:36 AM PDT She is a psychologist who used to deny being related to Donald – now she has written an explosive bestseller about him. She discusses his racism, incompetence, cruelty and why he never laughs Dinner in the Trump household was a hierarchical affair. Fred Trump, the patriarch, sat at the head of the table, with son Donald on his right and daughter Maryanne on his left. Other family members took their places in descending order of assigned importance. But one Thanksgiving, the eldest son, Fred Jr, found himself relegated to the junior end of the table with his daughter Mary. "During the course of the meal, my grandmother choked," Mary Trump recalls. "My dad had been a volunteer ambulance driver in the late 60s and early 70s so he knew the Heimlich manoeuvre and he very gently manoeuvred her into the kitchen and gave her the Heimlich, and that basically saved her from choking. Who needs Tokyo? Meet South Africa's Olympic chameleons Posted: 22 Jul 2020 01:30 AM PDT Scientists are putting dwarf chameleons through their paces in a series of speed and endurance challenges to study how the species is adapting The tension is palpable. The first athlete is placed on the starting line and the official timer, Dr Anthony Herrel, resets the stopwatch on his smartphone. Once given the go-ahead, Dr Krystal Tolley tickles the yellowy-green chameleon's tail and the two-inch reptile springs into action. About 10 seconds later, after reaching the end of the 1-metre dowel in a season's best time, it returns to the resting area and the next competitor is given a chance to strut its stuff. In the coming days, 120 Knysna dwarf chameleons (Bradypodion damaranum) – male and female, from forest habitats, gardens and parks – will be put through their paces in a series of speed and endurance challenges that the scientists refer to as the Chameleon Olympics. They will run on horizontal and vertical dowels of varying diameter; have the strength of their bite and gripping forces measured in newtons, and be tested on their ability to thermoregulate along a course that has a temperature gradient. ‘Coronavirus ruined everything’: the long wait for new limbs in Kurdistan Posted: 21 Jul 2020 11:15 PM PDT Decades of war have resulted in a high demand for prosthetics – and patients are anxious to visit clinics as they finally reopen Concentration is etched on Hussein's face as he walks along a scuffed yellow line painted on the floor of the clinic's rehabilitation room. He's getting a feel for his new prosthetic. Hussein lost his left leg below the knee in 1987 when he stepped on a landmine while fishing at Lake Dukan, around 100km (62 miles) east of Erbil in the Kurdistan region of northern Iraq. Mines and other unexploded remnants of successive wars litter the landscape, causing new injuries every year. More than half the clinic's 15,100 patients are amputees. Roughly 4,600 of them lost limbs as a result of conflict – 2,500 of these to landmines. Continue reading... |

Coronavirus near me: are UK Covid-19 cases rising or falling in your area? Posted: 22 Jul 2020 01:05 AM PDT Latest updates: how has Covid-19 progressed where you live? Check the week-on-week changes across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland The map shows local authorities where the number of cases has increased week-on-week and where it has fallen. Some of this is due to natural fluctuations, especially in areas where there are very few cases, and so a rise from 1 to 2 is a doubling. Increased testing also means that more cases may be being detected than previously, although the impact of this between one week and the next is likely to be slight. Continue reading... |
Are official figures overstating England's Covid-19 death toll? Posted: 21 Jul 2020 04:56 AM PDT PHE figures include deaths of anyone who tested positive, even if it was months ago Matt Hancock has announced an urgent review into how Public Health England (PHE) counts Covid-19 deaths after discovering what appeared to be a serious issue in how rates are calculated. Following the health secretary's move on Friday, Yoon K Loke and Carl Heneghan, of the Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine at Oxford University, wrote in a blogpost: "It seems that PHE regularly looks for people on the NHS database who have ever tested positive, and simply checks to see if they are still alive or not. PHE does not appear to consider how long ago the Covid test result was, nor whether the person has been successfully treated in hospital and discharged to the community." Continue reading... |
