Economic impact of Australia's bushfires set to exceed $4.4bn cost of Black Saturday Posted: 07 Jan 2020 07:01 PM PST Fires will cripple consumer confidence and harm industries such as farming and tourism, Moody's says The economic damage from the bushfires devastating Australia's eastern seaboard is likely to exceed the record $4.4bn set by 2009's Black Saturday blazes, Moody's Analytics has said. 'Extreme privilege': Ivanka Trump faces backlash over keynote speech at CES Posted: 07 Jan 2020 04:51 PM PST Decision to have president's daughter deliver keynote invited scathing criticism, especially from women in the tech industry Ivanka Trump's appearance at a major technology conference in Las Vegas has been met with a backlash from industry figures, who denounced her "privilege" and lack of tech qualifications. Trump spoke in a keynote session on Tuesday afternoon at CES, a consumer electronics trade show, on "the path to the future of work". Posted: 08 Jan 2020 03:47 AM PST Rolling coverage of the day's political developments as they happen, including Boris Johnson and Jeremy Corbyn at the first PMQs of 2020 and Johnson's meeting with the new European commission president, Ursula von der Leyen
Here is some Twitter commentary on the speech from Peter Foster, the Daily Telegraph's Europe editor. Now @vonderleyen draws line in sand. The divorce deal is "done and dusted" she said. .@vonderleyen notes UK will share same "destiny" as the rest of the continent - share same values and challenges. (Which is to say the super-sovereigntist approach is misguided). #Brexit #LSEEurope Uh-oh. I think the clouds just came in. A note of steel now in @vonderleyen - the relationship cannot be same as before; choices and trade-offs. Without free movement, level playing field you cannot have same access #Brexit #LSEEurope pic.twitter.com/2QHRixnAR6 So .@vonderleyen says you can have a zero tariff deal, and broard partnership on other stuff....security etc. ...equally but we need to be realistic about the limitations that come with UK decision to #Brexit #LSEEurope pic.twitter.com/KMjyurK0Xo Softening alert! So @vonderleyen makes clear that ways will be found to integrate UK into security/geopolitical EU outlook....a much softer note than was struck in outset of divorce talks I think. #Brexit #LSEEurope pic.twitter.com/Hh4Eb1LgaB
.@vonderleyen appeals to the next generation now...to the students, who may feel differently than their parents and grandparents did. "Collaboration over isolation". Outch. #LSEEurope #Brexit pic.twitter.com/xA01xCFqaJ Continue reading... |

Violence escalates as Romania cracks down on illegal timber trade Posted: 07 Jan 2020 09:00 PM PST Two rangers have been killed in three months and whistleblowers face intimidation and ostracism In the hamlet of Deia, nestled in the forested hills of Suceava county in northern Romania, Ilie Bucșă and his brother Dumitru have become pariahs. Recently an angry mob attacked the brothers, leaving Ilie with concussion and wounds all over his body. Old friends cross the road to avoid the brothers, having been warned to stay away or face losing their jobs. One night, someone even poured anti-freeze into the brothers' fish pond, killing half their fish. Their sin? They have been methodically filing complaints about illegal logging in the area. Silvio Horta, creator of hit TV series Ugly Betty, dies aged 45 Posted: 08 Jan 2020 03:05 AM PST Tributes paid to the screenwriter and producer behind the comedy-drama starring America Ferrera Silvio Horta, the creator of hit TV show Ugly Betty, has died at the age of 45. The television producer and screenwriter, who was of Cuban-American decent, began his career with the satirical teen film Urban Legends starring Jared Leto, and created two sci-fi programmes, The Chronicle and Jake 2.0, which were broadcast in the early 2000s. Horta, who died by apparent suicide, went on to have mainstream success with the comedy-drama starring Vanessa Williams and America Ferrera, which became a worldwide smash following its cancellation in 2010. Ferrera, who played the show's titular character, an unlikely fashion intern, paid tribute to Horta on Instagram. The actor said she was "stunned and heartbroken to hear the devastating news", adding that Horta's "talent and creativity brought me and so many others such joy and light". Elsewhere, Williams, who played the role of fearsome editor Wilhelmina Slater, added that his "creativity and passion will be missed by so many of us that worked with him. May he Rest In Peace". Michael Urie, who played Slater's personal assistant Marc, commented that Horta had "[broken] barriers and saved lives. Losing him is hard … I hear from LGBTQ people all the time that the show helped them." Continue reading... |

From rubbish to rice: the cafe that gives food in exchange for plastic Posted: 24 Dec 2019 02:00 AM PST The Garbage Cafe in Ambikapur, India, is helping to tackle the country's plastic waste problem – and their novel idea is catching on On bad days, when his employer made some excuse for not paying him his paltry daily wage, Ram Yadav's main meal used to be dry chapatis, with salt and raw onion for flavour. Sometimes he just went hungry. For a ragpicker like him, one of the thousands of Indians who make a living bringing in plastic waste for recycling, eating in a cafe or restaurant was the stuff of fairytales. But last week, Yadav was sitting at a table at the Garbage Cafe in Ambikapur, in the state of Chhattisgarh, over a piping hot meal of dal, aloo gobi, poppadoms and rice. He earned the food in exchange for bringing in 1kg of plastic waste. "The hot meal I get here lasts me all day. And it feels good to sit at a table like everyone else," he said. Continue reading... |
'Everyone else was just a bit player': my night out with Elizabeth Wurtzel | Suzanne Moore Posted: 08 Jan 2020 03:28 AM PST The Prozac Nation author was irresistible and impossible, but her writing courageously opened up the conversation about mental health Sometimes when a woman says "I am impossible", it's just classic, sappy, feminine self-deprecation. It's like saying, "Oh, this old thing?" when someone compliments you on a frock you have spent a long time thinking about and even more time saving for. Sometimes, though, when a woman says "I am impossible," you should believe her. Elizabeth Wurtzel was impossible. I believed her. I briefly experienced her being so. She came to London to promote Prozac Nation, the memoir that would make her famous, the best book she wrote, which was about the "United States of Depression". She demanded to meet certain people: writers including Martin Amis, Julie Burchill and Will Self were on her list. She also wanted sex and drugs. She picked at her food in a restaurant in Soho that was somehow not good enough. A lot of things were not good enough for her. We ended up in the Groucho Club, where she draped herself over various men, magazine editors. Huge, kohled eyes; long blond hair; a tiny vest top. She already had an FTW (Fuck the World) tat. She was both irresistible and very annoying and she knew both these things about herself. Continue reading... |

'Wrong then, wrong now': US clash with Iran echoes march to Iraq war Posted: 08 Jan 2020 12:00 AM PST As a new Republican president seeks re-election, senior figures in Washington warn history may be repeating itself A Republican president facing a tough re-election campaign and widely viewed as hopelessly out of his depth. Bureaucrats itching to turn US military firepower on a Middle Eastern regime they claim without evidence is plotting an imminent attack. Compliant sections of the media that put flag-waving jingoism ahead of skeptical scrutiny. So it was in late 2002, when President George W Bush's administration built unstoppable momentum towards invading Iraq, promising to destroy weapons of mass destruction (WMD) that never existed. Nearly two decades later the potential target is not Iraq but Iran, with many of the same concerns over false pretexts and official lies. Continue reading... |

Zali Steggall urges 'modern Liberals' to support her proposed climate change bill Posted: 08 Jan 2020 02:10 AM PST Exclusive: independent MP plans a 'people-powered' public campaign for a conscience vote similar to the one for same-sex marriage The independent MP Zali Steggall is calling on self-styled "modern Liberals" to support legislation to establish a new climate change framework, warning them to ignore the views of their constituents "at their peril". Steggall, who toppled Tony Abbott in the Sydney seat of Warringah at the May 2019 election, largely on a platform of climate change action, is finalising draft legislation for a "national climate change framework" that sets out a roadmap for Australia to transition to a decarbonised economy. Water wars: early warning tool uses climate data to predict conflict hotspots Posted: 07 Jan 2020 11:00 PM PST Tension over water scarcity is increasing across the globe. A new system flags up where this threatens to erupt into violence Researchers from six organisations have developed an early warning system to help predict potential water conflicts as violence associated with water surges globally. The Dutch government-funded Water, Peace and Security (WPS) global early warning tool, which was presented to the UN security council before it was launched formally last month, combines environmental variables such as rainfall and crop failures with political, economic and social factors to predict the risk of violent water-related conflicts up to a year in advance. The ‘ex-closeted gay jihadist' bringing meditation to Jakarta Posted: 07 Jan 2020 10:00 PM PST Once a campus fundamentalist who hid his sexuality, today Bagia Arif Saputra helps others find harmony in Indonesia's capital When Bagia Arif Saputra was growing up in a university town near Jakarta, becoming a jihadist seemed a natural choice for young men like him, who were steeped in the teachings of Islamic fundamentalism. Less easy was reconciling this identity with his sexuality. "I was living a double life," says Saputra. "I would go to the campus mosque, try to focus on my prayers … and find myself checking out a guy and thinking, 'Nice ass'. And then immediately, 'Astaghfirullah [God forgive me]!' So then I would have to redo my prayers. It was a vicious cycle." Continue reading... |
Posted: 07 Jan 2020 09:47 AM PST Founder of Brac, one of the world's largest non-profit development organisations, which began its work in Bangladesh When Fazle Hasan Abed set out to lower death rates among poor children in rural Bangladesh, by teaching mothers how to treat dehydration, he was careful not to pay his field workers per household reached, but on how well their subjects, often illiterate or semi-literate mothers, could answer questions afterwards. His approach, to reward high-quality instruction and rigorously monitor results of a door-to-door pilot scheme in the 1980s, fed lessons from the field back to research labs in Dhaka, and has been credited with saving countless lives from being lost to diarrhoea, a major source of child mortality in the country. It also propelled Brac, which Abed founded in 1972 as the Bangladesh Rehabilitation Assistance Committee to help refugees returning to their homeland after the liberation war of 1971, to become one of the largest non-profit development organisations in the world. Iran's assault on US bases in Iraq might satisfy both sides Posted: 07 Jan 2020 08:55 PM PST Tehran can show it has retaliated over the assassination of Qassem Suleimani, while US may shrug off limited nature of strike The "severe revenge" Iran promised for the death of Qassem Suleimani was heralded on Wednesday morning by at least two waves of short-range missile attacks on bases in Iraq hosting US and coalition personnel. The attacks will provide an opportunity for hawks inside the Donald Trump administration to ratchet up the conflict with Iran – but also potentially a pathway out of the crisis. Continue reading... |
Australia's bushfires mean New Zealand has become the land of the long pink cloud | Jim Salinger Posted: 07 Jan 2020 03:55 PM PST The impact of smoke on New Zealand's environment, health and tourism raises the legal issue of trans-boundary air pollution Kiwis have been shocked in recent weeks to discover their pristine glaciers turning pink, with apocalyptic orange skies covering New Zealand's biggest city, Auckland. So much so that police have been deluged with emergency calls asking what is going on, as the land of the long white cloud is turning pink (kikorangi māwhero). The catastrophic bushfires in Australia have also affected New Zealand. Because of the impact of trans-boundary air pollution (and its effects on other countries), there are legal implications to be considered. Continue reading... |
