If approved in court, the settlement will bring to an end most of the civil lawsuits pending against him. Continue reading... |

Trump condemned for tweets pointing to name of Ukraine whistleblower Posted: 27 Dec 2019 09:10 PM PST President posted link to article that identifies official – then sent a further tweet containing the name Donald Trump has retweeted material that publicly names the purported whistleblower whose complaint about the US president's dealings with Ukraine led to his impeachment. The president on Friday night sent a retweet from one of his supporters containing the alleged name of the individual. Trump drew the attention of his 68 million Twitter followers to the post which, along with publicising the name, inaccurately claimed that the whistleblower "committed perjury by making false statements" and is being protected by Adam Schiff, chairman of the House intelligence committee. There is no evidence to support these assertions. |

'A blessed initiative': secular Israel rejoices over Sabbath buses Posted: 27 Dec 2019 09:00 PM PST Minibuses that run on Friday evenings and Saturdays buck state's religious restrictions Tel Aviv is one of Israel's most dynamic cities, but the latest local craze could appear fairly humdrum to outsiders – a bus service that runs at weekends. Packed 19-seat minibuses fill up fast with passengers, who excitedly gossip about the new routes. People patiently queue at bus stops, knowing they might have to wait for two or three buses to pass before there is a space. Still, they are upbeat. "It's a pleasure," said Ben Uzan, a 30-year-old electronic engineer. "It's a blessed initiative." Continue reading... |
Overload and isolation: the decade that warped popular culture Posted: 27 Dec 2019 11:00 PM PST We forget 'seminal' albums and TV shows months after consuming them, and the mega-famous have to resort to ruses to get our attention – has streaming destroyed the mainstream? It's that time in the decade when people like me – professional monitors of mass culture – look back at the preceding 10 years and try to make sense of it. Give it a shape. Problem is, I'm finding that it all feels a bit foggy and formless. The chronology of the 2010s is jumbled and indistinct, its peaks and landmarks hard to pinpoint. Without consulting end-of-year lists, I'm not even sure I could tell you what came out in the 2010s and in what sequence. All that remains are faint after-images of things that were utterly absorbing at the time of listening or watching, but seemed swiftly to vanish into the void of the recent past. I binged my way avidly through shows such as Sex Education or BoJack Horseman or Atlanta, then promptly forgot their very existence, until the startling reminder of a new season being announced. There is always something new to watch, after all: an endless, relentless wave of pleasures lined up in the infinite Netflix queue. Continue reading... |

Trump fights to keep evangelicals on his side ahead of 2020 Posted: 28 Dec 2019 12:30 AM PST Recent, high-profile defections have left the president and his campaign spooked about losing a key component of his base The US president going to church on Christmas Eve should not have attracted much attention. But it was the specific church Donald Trump chose to attend on Tuesday that raised eyebrows. Instead of attending his usual service at the liberal church in Palm Beach, Florida, where he married his third wife, Trump instead went to a conservative Baptist-affiliated church in West Palm Beach. Another Mother review: Jamaica memoir skips island's darker history Posted: 27 Dec 2019 10:00 PM PST A story of a nanny who came to Princeton from Pisgah would have benefited from engagement with unpleasant realities Unlike most Jewish boys from New Jersey, I have a Jamaican accent," Ross Kenneth Urken writes in his debut, an affectionate memoir. While this may have the ring of a conversation overheard at a hipster Brooklyn bar, Urken claims it's "the honest-to-goodness truth, and it all started with Dezna". How Japan has fared in 30 years since the stock market bubble burst Posted: 27 Dec 2019 10:00 PM PST Nostalgia for the good times has been a coping mechanism for the world's third largest economy On 29 December 1989, Japan's Nikkei stock market index hit a high of 38,916, a milestone that proved to be the last hurrah of the country's asset-inflated bubble economy – a period of ostentatious consumption and overconfidence in the infallibility of Japan, Inc. What followed was a spectacular fall from the heights of the mid- to late 1980s. The stock market plummeted, losing more than $2tn (£1.5tn) in value by December 1990. In the years that followed, the Japanese surveyed an alien landscape of "restructuring" – code for cost-cutting – deflation and stagnation. When the bubble party ended, its hosts appeared to have no idea how to clean up the mess left by absurdly high share and property prices. Continue reading... |
What happened? The policies Scott Morrison's government appears to have abandoned Posted: 27 Dec 2019 09:42 PM PST Action to protect LGBT students, a payday lending crackdown and an integrity commission are among the Coalition's lost causes Governments should be judged not just on what they do with their time in office but also on what they don't do. There are only so many hours in a day, and so many parliamentary sitting weeks in a year (there were just 10 since the May election). Nevertheless it's important to know not just what the top priorities are but also what's been pushed to the backburner. Continue reading... |
