Simon Coveney says 'there is no alternative 585-page agreement waiting to be dusted off'

"These are fateful days and weeks in British politics. I remain convinced that there is a majority in the UK parliament which will do all it can to avert a disastrous crash-out Brexit," Simon Coveney said in the first major intervention by the Irish government after the withdrawal agreement was signed in November.

German recession fears grow after industrial output shrinks - business live

Posted: 08 Jan 2019 02:20 AM PST

All the day's economic and financial news, as Germany's factories suffer a 4.7% annual drop in output

European stock markets are pushing higher this morning, despite the growing fears that Germany could be sliding into recession.

All the main indices are in positive territory, although Frankfurt's DAX (+0.2%) is lagging behind.

A troublesome German industrial production figure, one that suggests the country could be slipping into a technical recession, was the most overt challenge to sentiment after the bell. However, it only ended up impacting the euro, sending the single currency down 0.4% against the dollar and 0.3% against the pound.

Celebrating this euro pull-back instead of lingering on Germany's economic woes, the DAX added half a percent, once again climbing back towards the 10800 it failed to burst past at the start of the week. The CAC was even more chipper, rising 0.8% to tickle 4750. As for the FTSE, a 0.6% helped push the UK index above 6850.

Back to Germany.... and Chris Williamson of data firm Markit also fears weak growth in the final three months of 2018 (following a 0.2% contraction in July-September).

Industrial production in #Germany is running 1.8% below Q3 so far in Q4, with #manufacturing output down 1.4%. Bodes ill for Q4 GDP and even worse than the disappointing #PMI numbers pic.twitter.com/PMzsn9nGa8

The next 15 megacities #1: Baghdad at 10 million

Dusk falls in Dar es Salaam, and for hundreds of thousands of people in this African megacity-to-be the daily chaos and frustration of the journey home begins.

'I have nothing to lose', says Israeli prime minister implicated in three corruption cases as elections loom

Israel's prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has used a nationally broadcast address to demand that he be allowed to confront live on television the states' witnesses who have implicated him in three corruption cases.

Will Florida's new Republican governor keep his vow of bipartisanship?

Posted: 07 Jan 2019 11:00 PM PST

So far, Ron DeSantis has nominated prominent Democrats to lead and pledged his support to the environment and clean water

Two months after narrowly winning a contentious election in which he nailed his colors firmly to the mast of Trumpism, Ron DeSantis will be sworn in as Florida's 46th governor on Tuesday with voters in the nation's third most populous state still unsure exactly what they will be getting.

Many of the Republican's picks for his new administration during the seven weeks' transition since his progressive Democratic opponent Andrew Gillum conceded have, predictably, followed his predecessor Rick Scott's brand of hardline conservatism. For example, Mary Mayhew, his choice to lead Florida's healthcare agency, served the White House in blocking expansion of the Medicaid program that provides health insurance for the poor. And DeSantis's key advisor and former state House speaker, Richard Corcoran, is a right-wing ideologue who will become the next commissioner of education.
