Eight and a half years after it was abandoned in the middle of the Indian Ocean when 16-year-old solo sailor Abby Sunderland had to be rescued in rough seas, a yellow yacht named Wild Eyes has been found floating upside down off the coast of South Australia.

The 40-foot yacht was encrusted with barnacles, the signature eyes on the hull scratched and faded. Its mast snapped off in the wild weather that forced Sunderland's rescue midway through her world record attempt to be the youngest solo sailor to circumnavigate the globe in 2010.

Too little, too late? The battle to save Tripoli's futuristic fairground

Posted: 02 Jan 2019 11:30 PM PST

Designed by Brazilian modernist Oscar Niemeyer, Lebanon's international expo site has been abandoned since civil war broke out in the 1970s

"It could collapse at any time," says the architect and activist Wassim Naghi. The facade of the unfinished, subterranean space museum in Tripoli, Lebanon, is visibly decaying and its steel reinforcements are rusted – but that may not be its biggest problem. "The ageing concrete's carbonation is invisible," explains Naghi when we meet in his office in the centre of the city. "We don't know how bad it really is."

Situated beneath an elevated concrete helipad, the museum was part of a planned permanent international fair designed by the Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer in the early 1960s that was expected to accommodate more than 2 million visitors a year. The 1,000 sq km site's 15 existing buildings also include a domed theatre, an atrium, an arch and collective housing. A 717-metre-long boomerang-shaped canopy was designed to house the permanent exhibition, alongside a separate, traditionally styled pavilion for exhibitions relating to Lebanon.

Why exercise alone won’t save us

Posted: 02 Jan 2019 10:00 PM PST

Sedentary lifestyles are killing us – we need to build activity into our everyday lives, not just leave it for the gym. By Vybarr Cregan-Reid

This is the time of year when trainers are mined from under beds and gym kits are disinterred from the bottom drawer. Google searches relating to physical fitness peak in January. Many people even trawl the web to find out about "desk exercises" and "workouts on the go" in case they are too busy to use their new gym memberships.

Our relationship with exercise is complicated. Reports from the UK and the US show it is something we persistently struggle with. As the new year rolls around, we anticipate having the drive to behave differently and become regular exercisers, even in the knowledge that we will probably fail to do so. Why do we want to exercise? What do we expect it to do for us? We all know we are supposed to be exercising, but hundreds of millions of us can't face actually doing it. It is just possible the problem lies at the heart of the idea of exercise itself.

Campaign says army could use the 'compassion' of 'snowflakes' and the 'focus' of phone zombies

The British army is calling on "snowflakes, selfie addicts, class clowns, phone zombies, and me, me, millennials" to join its ranks in a recruitment drive targeting young people.

The campaign, featuring posters and TV ads titled Your Army Needs You, suggests that what is seen as a weakness or a character flaw by the rest of society can in fact be seen as a strength by the army. The campaign states that the army could use the "compassion" of "snowflakes", the "self belief" of millennials, the "confidence" of selfie takers, and the "focus" of phone zombies.

The proceedings have offered extraordinary detail of the workings of a Mexican cartel, but have been hallmarked by what is unseen – and kept that way by Judge Brian Cogan.

Questions over relief effort multiply as it emerges aid officials knew for months of armed groups diverting food

The theft of food aid in Yemen by Houthi rebels might be only the tip of the iceberg, officials believe, as questions multiply over international relief efforts in the famine-ravaged country.

It has emerged that aid officials have been aware for months that armed groups – most prominently Houthi rebels in the capital, Sana'a – have been diverting food aid into the key areas they control, including by manipulating data in malnutrition surveys used by the UN.

Fragmenting nuclear arms controls leave world in a more dangerous place

Posted: 02 Jan 2019 09:00 PM PST

US could withdraw from a second treaty while Vladimir Putin's Russia promises a new generation of nuclear weapons

The decision on whether or not to destroy the world came down to a humble Soviet duty officer early one morning in 1983. Stanislav Petrov was told by his computer that the United States had launched at least five intercontinental ballistic missiles at the Soviet Union, and that they would strike in just 25 minutes.

Rather than send the alarm up the chain of command, the lieutenant colonel did nothing and averted a nuclear clash over what turned out to be a systems malfunction. For his troubles, Petrov was reprimanded for failing to keep careful notes during the incident and left the service the following year.
